Each student will prepare an 800-word memorandum addressed to the President of the United States of America or another high-level official of the federal government. The memo will examine an issue that concerns the United States- Latin American relationship in regard to questions of crime, drugs, violence, migration, and human rights.
The aim of the memo is to teach students how to build a historically informed argument in relation to present-day phenomena that have a considerable impact on U.S. politics and policies. I will explain in class how to structure the memo but in general the document should include a historically informed explanation of the issue, a descriiption of what is at stake for the United States, and a policy recommendation on how to address the problem. In order for a memo to be effective, it should be succinct, clearly written, and policy oriented. Tuesday, May 7 is the deadline to bring your final project before 12:00pm.

Your question post needs to be a minimum of 200 words, cover a topic related to this (and/or last) week’s readings, and use and cite an outside source (not the textbook) that is reputable (scholarly articles, government websites, reliable news articles, etc.). An ideal question post will be clear and give enough context and details for full understanding. It will require classmates to do some outside research, critical thinking, and express their own viewpoints. Try to use real world current events as topics in light of chapter concepts.

Reflect: The U.S. Constitution is the cornerstone of our federal government. The Constitution establishes a basic operational framework that enables the three branches of government—executive, legislative, and judicial—to interact and function as a unit. Embedded in this operational framework are two key principles: separation of powers and a system of checks and balances. Think about how these branches interact and the importance of these checks and balances and the separation of powers.
Write:
Explain the difference between checks and balances and the separation of powers, and explain why they are important to our democracy.
Discuss one recent real-world example of checks and balances, and explain the impact of it.
Discuss one recent real-world example of balance of power, and explain the impact of it.
