Facilitate Discussion of Course Readings
• Students (working alone or in pairs-you will sign up on a google doc posted in Brightspace) will help to facilitate class discussions of at least one set of course readings. Tools and tips to assist you to do an excellent job of this this will be provided, with the main one being DO NOT QUIZ US…rather, ENGAGE us through whatever means is most effective…response to a photo or other visual(graph perhaps), pair or small group discussion, followed by sharing, short “quick writes”, sketching or creating a visual or graphic of some kinds or any combination. You may want to employ the strategy “Numbered Heads Together”, which I will model for you. DO NOT JUST TALK AT US-engage us. COVER ALL IMPORTANT POINTS IN THE READING, BUT GO BEYOND THE READING and INCLUDE INTERESTING ADDITIONAL RELATED INFORMATION. Discuss with me if you have questions or want to brainstorm ideas for this. DO a great job of this so everyone can learn from you!!
– Attached below is the course readings on Chapter 10 of the book Life as We Know It (Can Be)
– Attached also below is an example of the presentation of a different chapter in the book
– Please add notes on what each slide is about and main points to present that would guide me on the presentation
– Please add videos related to the readings like the example of chapter 7 presentation i attached
– Please add discussion questions at the end
THANK YOU!

The evolution of the Kimberley Process (KP)
Reflect on what the KP means for global governance.
Discuss the role of nonstate actors in global governance: what is their place and potential as a global leader? Which of the resources of nonstate actors have been particularly valuable (information, moral entrepreneurship, global finance, etc.)? (Teams MNCs, Kimberley Process)
Can you discuss the role of nonstate actors in the KP? Such actors are the diamond mining coperations, the NGOs, the global media, individuals… In another announcement, I gave an example with Global Witness, the NGO that first raised awareness about the trade in conflict diamonds. Can you write a paper about that? Go you believe they demonstrated leadership, mobilized others for action, designed new forms of cooperation, etc.?
Or, consider topic #4. It refers to new arrangements in global governance. The KP is one of them:
* Discuss the role of new models and methods of global governance. Is the established post-WWII system of international institutions strengthened or weakened as a result of emerging new forms of governance, and is it in the process of being replaced with new flexible and context-specific arrangements? (Teams USD, Governance of the Arctic, Kimberley Process, Critical materials, G-20)
Can you talk about what is new in the KP as an arrangement that regulates behavior a particular area of global interaction (trade, cooperation between sttates and nonstate actors, etc.)? Does the KP resemble an international institution? Why didn’t the UN, the world’s universal organization, or the WTO in which almost all countries are members, resolve the issue but it had to be brand new arrangement? Is it more effective like that? Or, does arrangements such as the KP weaken the established international institutions? These are the kinds of questions that can be explored

Takeaways Prologue and Introduction
In this chapter, the author wrote a letter for his son, River. I found this letter to be full of regret on what the world has turn into. He  shared on how the world continuously changed negatively over time due to the impact of climate change as well as, societal changes, and the world back then was different to the world today. Despite this, he was hopeful about this problem. He believes that the future generations can change the world into a better place. I think that was the main reason he wrote this letter. I also found the quote “it doesn’t matter how you draw the Pyramid of Needs; what matters is how you fill it” very true. I think that we humans are different and each of us can have a different ways to view things.
Application to real life
I think there is a lot that we could take from this. We have to understand that the world is continuously changing and what works in the past might not work in the future. The world will always have problem and it is our job to adapt to it. We humans are starting to realize that we have a environmental and societal problem that we have to solve. I think we can use the past as a lesson for the future and to not repeat the same mistakes again.
Takeaways Air
I think the concept of “Carbon Godzilla” is the main point in this chapter. I’ve never really looked at air pollution this way until i read this. I realize that air pollution is the by-product of human advancement. The importance of clean air and environmental regulations was also shared in this chapter.
Application to real life
First of all, I am glad to be able to experience a cleaner air here in LA compared to what I had back home in Indonesia. I can really feel the difference and how it affected my health. Having clean air is really important and I think we should focus on that because it is essential for our life and everyone should be able to access clean air freely.
Takeaways Temperature
In this chapter, he emphasized how the global temperature is rising due to climate change and its effects on ecosystems, and human societies. I found the part where he talks about Camels to be very interesting. He highlighted how camels has adapted to changing climates and uses their advantage for a totally different condition. He also talks about how this increase in heat has affected ecosystems including the decline of trout populations and changes in sugar maple sap. I think that this is a sign that we should take action to combat climate change especially when heat already takes more lives than everything else.
Application to real life
I think that personally there is not much I can do other than supporting renewable energy and reducing carbon footprint. But I think what is important is to share awareness on this subject and educate people that don’t know about this problem.

GLOBAL STUDEIS : LATIN AMERICA
I AM OPEN TO A GREAT TOPIC WAS THINKING SOMETHING IN COSTA RICA IF YOU CAN FIND WHAT IS NEEDED PLEASE. IF NOT , YOUR NEXT SUGGESTION IS FINE!
This
assignment asks you to prepare a  presentation on a specific topic about
contact zones and/or colonial legacies in the Latin American regions or nations
covered in class. You are free to pick your own topic and should select
something that interests you. Select a specific historical moment, figure, or
phenomenon specific to one of the Latin American regions (or countries) we have
studied, or to relations between them. Your goal should be to explain
why your topic is critical to understanding contact zones and/or colonial
legacies in Latin America, i.e. how contact zones and colonial conditions
(whether internal or external) that have persisted even after Independence affect
a specific Latin American region or country, perhaps even to this day. You
should not pick a topic that we have already discussed at length in class, but
you are encouraged to draw connections between your topic and material from the
course.
The
first challenge will be finding something specific enough on which to focus. A
more focused and detailed project will be stronger and easier to execute. You
are going to have to spend some time brainstorming – try to find a topic that
interests you and that is appropriate for a 7-minute presentation. You could
think about culture, law, politics, government, medicine, economics, gender,
tradition, popular music, movies, television, entertainment, international
relations, the military, industry, or youth, to name but a few ideas. You do
not have to cover the entire period from Independence to the present. Rather,
you should limit your scope to a specific time. A lot of your energy on this
project should be spent actually selecting a topic. I would suggest doing to
some searching on library databases (see suggestions below) as you are
narrowing down your topic. You don’t want to pick a topic and then discover
that it is incredibly hard to locate good information on that subject.
When you have selected a topic, please send it to
me for approval—no later than midnight, SUNDAY July 14 . If you’re struggling to settle on a
topic, please contact me before JULY 11 so we can do some brainstorming
together. Please note: You must have approval of your
topic in order to have your
final project accepted for a final grade (and, needless to say, your final
project must be on the topic that you had approved).
Remember,
your goal is to carefully analyze the impact of an event, person, or phenomenon
related to neo-colonialism, imperialism, colonial legacies and/or contact
zones,  transculturation, hegemony. You should not just summarize an
event. Instead, you need to think critically about your topic, explain its
relevance to our understanding of Latin America, and make larger connections
with the class. In order to do this, you should utilize our library website
databases (Lexis Nexis, JStor, Ebscohost, Google Scholar, etc.) that will
provide you with quality sources on your subject. DO
NOT JUST USE GOOGLE and/or internet “.com” sites. You should have, at
minimum, THREE academic sources—and they should be substantially used and
cited in your presentation (and be listed in a “Works Cited” at the end of your
presentation). Three academic sources are required, but you need
FIVE sources in total to have the opportunity to receive a maximum score for
the “Evidence” criterion in the grading rubric (please make sure to look at the
rubric!).
After
you have done your research, you will construct a powerpoint. Be sure to spend
some time designing your powerpoint: Do not simply fill your powerpoint with
text. Instead, try to find a balance between images and text. You will lose
points if your powerpoint is paragraph after paragraph of text or if you read
directly from the powerpoint. Also, be sure to cite your sources within
the powerpoint as you go along (e.g. “According to _________, Mexico was
_______”; or, “Reflecting on the Cuban Revolution, renowned historian,
_________, has argued ‘ ________.’”
Finally, once you have constructed
your powerpoint you will need to record yourself over your slides. This can be
done directly in powerpoint. I can refer you to my colleague and fellow
historian Dr. Zachary Scarlett has created a short videoLinks to an external site. showing
you how this is done. The other option is to use Canvas Studio, which students
have found very accessible and easy to use. I will be posting some information
about how to use Canvas Studio.
I
highly recommend that you write some kind of script for yourself instead of
just improvising. The clearer you are the better. Please also provide a work
cited at the end of your powerpoint that lists the work you consulted.
Presentations
should be no longer than 7 minutes. Contrary to the instructions in Dr.
Scarlett’s video, your presentations—either a powerpoint file, or your Canvas
Studio presentation—should be uploaded to Canvas.
