Recreational Shark Fishing

Fishing, especially recreational fishing, is considered to be one of the most famous activities all over the world: people like to spend the vast majority of their time in order to use their imagination, attract the attention of other people, and catch as much fish as possible. There are lots of techniques, which may be used during fishing; however, it is crucially important to decide what fish you are going to catch in order to choose the best tool to achieve the positive results only.

For example, when we talk about shark finishing, people have to think about proper techniques in order not only to catch a shark but also to hold it for a long period of time. It is necessary to admit that recreational shark fishing has its own pros and cons, which have to be mentioned and discussed.

People satisfaction after a shark is caught is good indeed, however, recreational shark finishing has lots of negative outcomes for both, sharks and humans: people are not always ready to catch a shark and take the necessary steps to protect themselves from sharks reaction of being caught, and sharks, even being the most terrible predators in water, still carry out significant functions, and their disappearance causes numerous changes within underwater life.

In fact, recreational shark fishing was not that popular until 1975. People did not find this very activity rather safe and significant in their lives, and preferred to catch some smaller fish in order to feed and entertain. However, the movie Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg in 1975, attracted the attention of numerous fishers and those people, who liked extreme and danger. The story of one huge white shark amazes lots of people, lots of professional fishermen wanted to catch one of those sharks, which were presented on the screen in order to save their families and not to be afraid to spend some time in water.

Of course, Jaws played a significant role in the development of recreational shark fishing; however, it was not the only one. The point is that people may catch a shark without a boat and use rods or reels, settled on a bridge or dock. So, if you want to feel something really exciting and unusual, you are welcome to buy all the necessary equipment and visit one of the nearest beaches in order to try own luck.

But still, people should take into consideration certain facts concerning sharks in order to comprehend how much harm they can do by such frequent recreational shark fishing. Lots of researches prove that more than 100 million sharks are caught and killed every year. In other words, 11 000 sharks are killed by people every hour. (Bryant, n.d.) It is necessary to mention that these numbers are all about both commercial and recreational shark fishing.

If we talk about recreational shark fishing only, it is better to use the facts, offered by the US National Marine Fisheries Service: they admit that more than 12 million sharks and skates were killed during the year of 2004, however, lots of recreational shark fishers prefer to release caught sharks back to the ocean. (Bryant, n.d.) Sharks face too many problems while reproducing: they cannot find a proper sexual partner during a long period of time; they spend much energy to give a birth to one pup and should have a rest; they do not reproduce too many pups in one time (from 2 to 20); and, finally, they reproduce only one time in a year.

(Berman 26) So, if people do not stop recreational fishing, it is quite possible that with time, there will be no shark to catch at all. There are so many fishing tournaments, which require senseless killing of sharks in order people may tickle own and someones vanity. These tournaments bring much money for people with different social status, the only thing that is required is proper equipment and certain sum of money to become a participant of the tournament and demonstrate the others that you are ready and have enough financial support to start your affair.

Of course, money will be always a good reason to participate in such tournaments, however, it is impossible to buy everything, and proper condition of ocean is something that turns out to be rather significant to the lives of any being in this world. This is why people should not destroy their environment in order to win more money or prove someone that they are the best in something. Sharks are more vulnerable to extinction than most other fish. For many, recovery may take decades after fishing pressure is reduced. (Chivian, 267)

Well, we have already proved why recreational shark fishing is dangerous for sharks and causes bad outcomes. However, to demonstrate that shark fishing is not the best kind of entertainment, it is better to talk about human victims and injuries. The major point is that sharks behavior is very hard to predict; sharks reactions to human actions.

There are more than 370 kinds of sharks in this world (Richardson & Schaefer 5) and it is impossible to investigate the behavior of each shark even for the most sophisticated scientists. This kind of behavior remains one of the most mysterious ones in this world. Sharks attacks and attitude to other fish in the ocean have rather different character. So, recreational shark fishing is considered to be one of the most dangerous kinds of sport even for the most desperate people and adrenaline lovers. It may happen that sharks eat people, of course, it happens rather rarely, but still, it may happen.

Sometimes, many sharks fishers return to their homes with numerous injuries of different levels. This is one more reason to think thoroughly whether shark fishing is worth or not. Many people still think that great white shark is the most terrible and the biggest shark in the world. However, researches demonstrate that a basking shark and a whale shark turn out to be bigger; their length is about 12 15 meters. (Cerullo et al., 2006) Have you ever met a fish that is longer than a school bus? Hardly, this is why it is better to be rather careful while shark fishing and be sure about own courage and skills to start fishing.

In general, fishing may be regarded as both good and bad activity of people. First of all, it is necessary to take into consideration that shark fishing requires certain equipment and skills. Without both of them, recreational shark fishing may become rather frustrating for people and bring not quite positive results. Also, people should remember that sharks are significant elements of our every day life: oceans and all creatures inside cannot exist without sharks.

If something happen to oceans, people will also feel certain changes and face numerous troubles. I find this reason as one of the strongest. It is better to observe sharks as a good source for the necessary treatment, as sharks have some substances, which turn out to be rather useful for people. Of course, shark fishing is bad because it may cause sudden death of the fishers. The behavior of sharks is hard to predict, this is why lots of people faces numerous problems being too close to sharks.

Some people still find money as a good reason to start their fishing on sharks. Of course, shark fishing tournaments present great opportunities to people to earn more money, however, they are not sure that their money may be spend on medical treatment that will be necessary after such kind of fishing. So, it is possible to fish and catch sharks, grounding on commercial or medical purposes, or, finally, to save own life; however, recreational shark fishing has more negative sides than positive, and we should keep it in mind.

The Commercial Fishing Techniques

Commercial fishing is the process of taking fish, seafood, or resources from oceans or other water objects for marketing. Hence, diverse commercial fishing techniques have been developed and created throughout the industrys history. All of the techniques differently affect various spheres related to the fishing process, such as the environment, the crews health, the volume of the catch, and the levels of effort needed. Therefore, each company decides the most appropriate commercial fishing techniques for itself based on the estimation of the pros and cons and the comparison of the results.

One of the most common and broad-based techniques is pelagic trawling which is a method of catching fish with the help of a net. It includes dragging a net through where most fish feed, usually in the middle of the water column (Commercial fishing methods, n.d.). It targets fish only on the mid-and surface water levels. This method is preferable as it does not cause much damage to the environment, does not destroy ocean flora or fauna, and is not associated with high risks of sea deterioration. However, it allows catching large amounts of fish which may negatively affect certain fish species populations. This remark cannot be considered damaging regarding the commercial fishing industry as any technique and the industry itself impact the decline of ocean creatures.

Additionally, pelagic trawling is often looked at as ineffective due to some vital criteria. According to Dagtekin et al. (2021), such factors as professional experience in pelagic trawling, subsidy rate in this technique, total crew, as well as the quality of the utilized vessels explain the methods technical inefficiency. These negative impacts can be reduced by heightening governmental funding, optimizing technical gears, and improving the crew experience in this method of catching fish.

On the opposite, bottom trawling is another fishing technique but is mostly used for the trawl in deep waters. It involves dragging a net along the seabed for the purpose of catching fish species that generally feed and live there (Commercial fishing methods, n.d.). Usually, the ocean creatures caught by this method include haddock, plaice, cod, or sole. In comparison with the previous method, bottom trawling causes much more damage to the environment and raises diverse difficulties for sea inhabitants. For example, based on the conducted research, Hiddink et al. (2017) conclude that the effect of trawling frequency results in the bigger falls in biomass due to the increase in swept area ratio. In conclusion, bottom trawling is associated with high amounts of catch and environmental risks simultaneously. However, the challenges could be reduced or decreased through optimization of nets and their damaging aspects, as well as a barrier in the catch volumes that will help maintain the variety of sea creatures.

Those methods are quite popular in the fishing industry; however, otter trawling is the most ubiquitous one. It can be described as simply dragging the net along the seabed in order to gain collect fish by the fast movement and prevent them from escaping by closing the net (Commercial fishing methods, n.d.). This technique allows the crew to gain huge catches, therefore, get higher profits from their selling. However, otter trawling negatively affects the ocean environment, especially its seabed. Supporting the argument, Rijnsdorp et al. (2020) state that their research showed high levels of impact otter trawling on such components of the sea fauna as mud, sand, and gravel. This helps to conclude that although this fishing technique is one of the most effective, it affects and destroys the seabed; hence, several modifications are required. Currently, no relevant improvements can be suggested; however, due to their importance, the implementation of otter trawling cannot be receded.

Dredging is a common subset of bottom trawling techniques as well. It is generally used for capturing such sea creatures as oysters, mussels, and scallops from the seabed (Commercial fishing methods, n.d.). As the gears utilized are in the form of metal cages, it can be predicted that the habitat in the form of sand or mud will be damaged similarly to the previous method. It is considered the most destructive method, causing major irreversible damage to diverse beds in the sea (Commercial fishing methods, n.d.). Therefore, a single instance of intervention in certain areas will cause recoverable damage, while consecutive or numerous dredges generally lead to the total decay of the exploited bed. Additionally, Wenger et al. (2017) conclude that dredging is a huge stress factor for fish and marina, which significantly lowers its quality and utility. Regardless of all challenges faced during the implementation of this method, it is the most popular technique for catching mussels and resembling types of fish. This is the most relevant technique for now; therefore, change or developments are unlikely to happen.

Lobster and crab pots are often utilized to catch the mentioned species. This can be considered as one of the most merciful techniques of fishing as it allows one to gain only the required species without considerable damage. It represents metal cages that attract crabs and lobsters that enter the metal prison and later cannot escape it; however, fish usually manage to survive, which is a good result (Commercial fishing methods, n.d.). No changes are needed here as the technique itself is the most convenient, low-effort, and acceptable method.

Fishing Industry Of South Korea

The fishing industry of South Korea had been fueled by their rapid economic growth of Gross Domestic Product(GDP) at a rate of 7% between the 1970s and the 2000s, while taking into account the nation’s 1997-1998 Economic Crisis[1]. In the 1960-1970’s, South Korea’s export of Fishery products peaked at approximately 17.5% of their total export value, being a key player in the nation’s total GDP. In 2001 South Korea’s fishing industry turned for the worse as their trade balance became a deficit[1]. Becoming the 12th largest fishery producer in the world, South Korea accounted for 2.1% of the world’s fish production, reaching 3.1 million tonnes in 2010[2].

The Commercial Sector

South Korea’s commercial fishing industry started to boom in the 1950’s during which commercial companies were only operating in their Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) where 98% of the landings were from these waters. This numerically translates to approximately 216,000 tonnes of fish and other marine life. A majority of these fish during the 1950s were largehead hairtail[3].

The Recreational Sector

Recreational fishing in South Korea has been existent for over hundreds of years and is essentially divided into inland and marine fishing. Marine fishing involves the use of a boat, enabling recreational fishers to have access to different areas of the ocean, expanding their on-shore(inland) fishing. Residents of South Korea started to use boats as a mode of transport to aid their fishing and was reported that they initiated this in 1971[3]. This segment of fishing is regulated and enacted upon by the Fisheries Act of 1908(or the latest one; Chosun Fishery Act of 1929) and the Recreational Fishing Boats Operation Act(RFBOA). The Chosun Fishery Act’s purpose is to regulate shore enclosures and implement minimum size catches. While the latter is in charge of the operational aspects that ensure the safety of fishers through boat inspections[4].

In the year of 2008, South Korea reportedly had 6 524 000 recreational fisher, which consisted of 37% inland, 27% marine and 36% of both. However total annual recreational catches were around 850 tonnes in 1971 in which is seen to be increased by 53 000 tonnes in 2010. The major types of fish caught by recreational fishers were generally Acanthopagrus schlegelii, Girella punctata, Oplegnathus fasciatus and Pagrus major.[3](insert graph)

Fish Culture of South Korea

Seafood Consumption Rate

South Korea holds one of highest seafood production and consumption rate in the world, and since 1980, their per capita daily average fish consumption has been ever-increasing by 2.2%. The consumption of fish species such as yellow croaker, hair tail and flat fish are the more traditional taste, whereas since the start of 2000’s, South Koreans has seen to move to high-valued seafood such as King crab, salmon and shrimp. It is known that the expenditure of particular fish species do positively correlate with an individual’s income. Where an individual’s income increases, their expenditure of fish also becomes higher.

Fish culture and fish consumption also is determined by seasonal changes that occur. Certain fish species that are most consumed in Winter are the Alaska pollock and cod, whereas the hair tail and mackerel fish are generally consumed during the summer. Delicacies such as Flat fish is a cultural dish within South Korea where a majority consumes it as sashimi, sharing its food culture with Japan. [1]

Over fishing

Overfishing is an issue prevalent among the three major seas surrounding South Korea. One of the major offenders of illegal fishing are Chinese commercial vessels that often breach EEZ zones. Despite a 5-year deal in 2001 regarding a temporary agreement between South Korea and China, the problem of illegal fishing is still present. The encroachment of South Korea waters by Chinese boats have caused major backlash, resulting in 4628 vessels being seized since the 2001 agreement.[5] In particular, Beijing and Seoul’s agreement to be more proactive in managing this problem was futile concerning the level of enforcement and how it was done. Rising tensions were evident in December 2010, where two Chinese fishermen died after a South Korean Coast Guard vessel collided with their boat. In addition, South Korea’s integrity in solving such illegal fishing disputes were further questioned in 2012 when a 44 year-old Chinese fishermen died after being hit by a rubber bullet that was fired by a South Korean Coast Guard[6].

Policies and procedures to ensure sustainable South-Korean fishing

In 2014, South Korea in its bid to increase fishing regulations sought cooperation among several agricultural and fishery organisations. The members of this cooperation included but are not limited to; Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries; the East Sea Fisheries Management Service and the National Fisheries Quality Management Service. Through the flow of information being shared among these agencies, it became clear that resources were much stronger and effective[7].

In addition, South Korea had implemented in 2005 a “Fish Stock Rebuilding Plan” to boost current levels of certain fish species and target an approximately level. The catch per unit effort(CPUE) of particular controlled species such as sandfish has increased from 0.44(2005) to 0.78(2007) within the East Sea.[8]

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative(USTR) announced in 2019 its intention for an environmental consultation with Korea as a means to manage fishing vessels. Its aim is to deter vessels from engaging in illegal fishing and hence monitor, regulate and control fishing in Korean-US waters[9]

Exclusive Economic Zone Disputes

South Korea has a prolonged maritime dispute with China after both states agreed to the conventional terms set out by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. This convention sought out to regulate international waters and ensures that each state are able to claim a zone within 200 nautical miles its coast. It allowed the state to control and take charge of what is done within those waters. Whilst the ratification of the convention was settled in 1996 by both countries it occurred that their declared zones were overlapping across the Yellow Sea. It was argued by South Korea that for a fair and equitable agreement, the ‘median line’ principle was to determine the overlapping of zones. However, China disagreed, where they insisted that their population and as well as their coastal extent should be the determining factor in this dispute[6].

The Peculiarities Of Fly Fishing In Texas

Fly fishing is somewhat an extensively played sport in the world, but in Texas USA the game is a little bit different. As big as the state itself is, there exist an extreme number of opportunities for fly fishing. There are plenty of saltwater lakes and freshwater ponds where you can go and start right away with fly fishing. Texas is as beautiful as a state it is and filled with plenty of beautiful places where you can simply go away, holstering everything on your vehicle, reaching the desired places to enjoy fly fishing in Texas.

The only question that persists here is that what is stopping you from going to Texas and having that beautiful trip that you have always wanted? Maybe you don’t have any idea about the very places in Texas where you can go for fly fishing?

If that is the case then you don’t have anything to worry about, there are some of the most beautiful places in Texas that ranks best for fly fishing. The best of the best there might include the Guadalupe River, Blanco River, Llano River, Lampasas River, and other few. This article specifically focuses on exploring such places and what other information you should be looking out for when going there for fly fishing.

Texas, evidently is so large and far fetched that you can’t draw on a particular place for fly fishing from the get-go. Trial and error seem to be the most appropriate way of coming around such places where fly fishing happens and is greatly enjoyed by travelers, common people, or others sharing the same hobby.

There are plenty of lakes, saltwater shorelines, small streams, and creeks that it can be very easy to get dazzled and choose something random which doesn’t even fit the proper requirements for fly fishing. Here are some amazing places where you can go for fly fishing without having to wander in the whole state;

The Guadalupe River

This is a mystic river with the availability of fishing season from November till May, the place within this period is already booming with visitors and locals enjoying fly fishing. The river is situated near the blossomed city of Sattler.

The overall season or time allocation for fly fishing is different from other places and the main reason is the availability of trout fish which makes this place a winter delight for the people gathering from all around the country.

There are many things for which that river is famous for, the most subtle being the scenery which you would get while getting busy with fly fishing would just be splendid. There are trees all over at the bank of the river and currents of high water smother your boat all day long, within these currents teeming and zip lining across the river is the rainbow trout which makes this whole adventure worthwhile.

Blanco River

Blanco River is another beautiful spot for the wanderers of fly fishing, however, there is a small restriction in there. There are plenty of dams being built within the river which fairly restricts you from going far away in the open. That is why you would have to settle for working your magic in the areas before dams start. You can find a beautiful spot for yourself where you can park your boat and get on with the fly fishing adventure of yours, as the place itself is not that crowded.

Many types of fish gather around here, that is why the crowd is also specie specific, some come around to catch the ones they like while others waiting for others to surface. The most common types of fish that you can find around here include sunfish, panfish, both small and largemouth bass. Unfortunately, trout is only in a small number so if you were specifically going to travel here to catch trout or salmon then you are advised to visit some other place.

No anglers can be found around the harsh winter as these fly fishing experts like the start of spring when the crowd is scattered to begin with their fly fishing adventures.

Llano River

This beautiful destination calling out the anglers from all parts of the country is located in the center of Texas and by true means is an oasis. With plains of rocks, bushes, gigantic trees as well as grass etched across its sides, the water of this River runs clean and provides access to enormous loads of fish which ends up as a treat for the anglers.

If you want to enjoy each and every bit of fly fishing then you will clearly be doing justice with your skillset by choosing this place, because anglers possessing all types of skillset in fly fishing are welcome to try out their luck here.

There are two types of fish that stretch this whole River such as bass and sunfish, both the north side and the south side of the River seems to be teeming with fish and other rich attributes which a fly fishing expert would be pleased with. Clear and adequate water, strong and bold currents and wider berth of the river provide a fairground to the anglers to practice their skillset and benefit from it in a river teeming with fish on end.

Lampasas River

Lampasas River starts to stretch along with the hillside area of Hamilton County and is mainly situated to the west end side of the town. There is all kind of growth happening around the River with shrubs, large pine trees, and hefty grass growing on end.

Choosing a particular fly fishing rod would be the real challenge here that you would have to overcome instead of worrying about the availability of the fish. The main reason for this is because this River is not smooth through and through, there are some narrow areas with low levels of water and then some tree branches hang down from the Riverside, making it harder for the anglers to rally upon a particular fishing rod.

There are no restrictions on fishing with this river, you can come and do fly fishing all year long, and the availability of the fish is something else that adds a certain spark to it. You will find sunfish, perch, and smallmouth bass.

There are some narrow pools filled with shallow and dead water here and there, these could prove to be the excellent places for the beginners to start with fly fishing. Effective training within these pools would add up to classic fly fishing skills being continually updated and crafted.

What about the Gadgets?

Well, the first order of business to leave for fly fishing is to make sure that whether or not you have the appropriate gadget with you? There are plenty of things that you might require such as; fly fishing rod along with reels, personal gear for fly fishing, bait, Wide perched Hat for protection of eyes from the sun, polarized glasses, Backpack with essential eatables and water support and some Sunscreen. These are the appropriate gadgets that you require in order to turn your fly fishing trip into a success.

If you are a professional then, of course, you would already know about all this gear in advance and will be making sure to double-check everything before you leave for the journey. But if you are only a beginner and want some help with all this stuff then you can always shop by the River, lake or creek you are going fly fishing for. There would always be a small shop with all the appropriate gadgets and the salesman can walk you through whatever things would be enough to get the job done for you.

Furthermore, any advice on what type of bait you should be using can be asked about from these local fly fishing shops. The people out there would love to help you out in any way they can. One of the most challenging things would be to set-up bait, flies are not going to pull it out for you in Texas that is why you require something discreet and subtle such as a grasshopper, crickets or something like that.

If you are unsure about what to use then ask the locals or people already doing fly fishing beside you, you would surely get the support you require.

Appropriate times for fly fishing

The most appropriate time for fly fishing in Texas is going to be the winter. But you can vouch for fly fishing all year long, there are no restrictions whatsoever. Why winter would be the best time should you ask? Because in the summer, it gets unbearably hot with the sun always standing atop and burning everything out, the only suitable time with conditions for fly fishing can only be found in the evening. Plus, there would be more boats, canoes, and other things in the water than fish during crowded times.

That is why you should stick with winter if going for fly fishing in Texas because it would be less crowded, with more appropriate conditions, and most important of them all, the fish would be easier to spot and wrestle out of water.

Hunting And Fishing Rights In Canada

For many years many indigenous people lived off hunting and fishing for survival and still do today. Many indigenous people’s rights to hunt and fish mean so much more than just a hobby or sport, to others it could be survival, culture and much more. This research essay is going to talk about how fishing and hunting rights affect indigenous people’s ways, how it affects their everyday life, their past, and possibly their future. The first point is about why the indigenous hunting and fishing rights were needed. The second point is about which treaties were signed, and how they affected their rights to be able to fish and hunt. The third and final point is about the history of indigenous people hunting and fishing, so how they did it before the settlers came to Canada.

The first point is about why the hunting and fishing rights were needed. One reason is so we don’t over hunt the population. This is important because people want future generations to enjoy wildlife as they do, laws to conserve the wildlife have since been passed. These laws establish hunting seasons that avoid nesting and mating season and limit harvesting. A second important reason is the fur trade back in the day, the fur trade was the biggest business in Canada. This was due to the fact the fur created soft comfortable jackets that kept you warm during cold seasons. Although it was a good thing business was booming this made the owners of the companies force employees to kill more animals for more fur.

This meant animals were dying out much more than before and some species could possibly go extinct. Due to this laws and rights needed to be made for hunters. These laws and rights help protect the animals. The fur traders now have a limit to the number of animals they can kill. The third reason was so people don’t overfish the population lots of fishing laws have been made. The most important one is when they created fishing seasons, fishing seasons protect fish during spawning and limit the amount of fish you can catch. This then increases the size of the population and size limits are to protect fish of spawning size before they are caught. The main goal of fishing laws is to make sure everyone can enjoy fishing and to preserve the fish. These are the three main reasons hunting and fishing rights were created, the next paragraph will talk about three important treaties that indigenous signed.

The second point is about treaties and what indigenous could do and what they couldn’t when they were signed. The first treaty signed was the Robinson treaty in 1850 this treaty allowed indigenous people to hunt and fish on ceded territory only. Ceded territory means that the land is lived on by other tribes, nations, or groups. The second treaties signed were the Vancouver treaties in 1850-1854. The deal made in these treaties were that indigenous people would give up land for clothes and cash, but they would still be able to hunt. At first this worked, and they were able to hunt and fish on the land but eventually they were pushed off and forced to live in reserves. This treaty shows how the indigenous were mistreated and how they also put faith in the settlers and trusted them. The third and final treaties signed are the Williams treaties in 1923. These treaties force the indigenous to surrender their title to the land and their hunting and fishing rights on the properties. There are also many more treaties not listed here but these are the three that show how the indigenous were mistreated and that is an important topic. The next paragraph will talk about how it was like to hunt and fish before all the treaties and all the settlers.

The third point is about the history of indigenous people hunting and fishing before the settlers came to Canada. This is an important topic because this shows how hunting has changed over the years, this may be due to the facts that guns and bullets are now around and are much easier to use then weapons in the past. The first method indigenous people used to hunt was the bow and arrow. They used these bows and arrows to kill larger animals like bison, deer and elk. The arrows they used were made from a variety of things such as dogwood, wild rose, ash, birch, chokecherry, and black locust. Arrows made from these things allowed them to fly far and hard for long periods of time, they were also very durable and could be reused. Another hunting method used was snares and traps, this was a dominant method when they were trying to fur trap. It’s mostly done for the fur of the animal, but some people use this method for food.

An example of trapping is the beaver trap, the trappers would place fish on the other side and once the beaver went for the fish the entrance it came through would drop onto its head which ends up decapitating the beaver. Once they killed the beaver, they would either use him for a source of food or for a source of fur for the fur trading market. The main fishing method was spears which they would throw at the fish with a line attached to it so they can pull the spear back to them. The spears were mainly wooden and had a sharpened rock attached to the tip of it. The second fishing method was fishing nets which weren’t as popular back then, but you caught fish much more efficiently using the net method. Fishing was used much more in coastal spots in Canada whereas hunting was used all over Canada for fur and food. If you think of all these points together there is a clear reason why these hunting and fishing rights were made. This next paragraph is about summarizing everything that has been said so far in this essay.

All these reasons that have been said so far impact the reason why hunting and fishing rights are not only needed but were made. The first point is talking about why the hunting and fishing rights were needed. The three points used in that paragraph were don’t over hunt, the fur trade, and to not overfish. These are all things that are clearly important because if overfishing or over hunting happen there will be gone a lot of the world’s food source. The fur trade was also very important because the number of animals getting killed for fur was so high eventually the government created a law to limit the animal’s deaths. The second point is talking about important treaties. The three points used were the Robinson treaty, the Vancouver Island treaties, and the Williams treaties. These treaties all talk about deals made between the indigenous and the settlers and also where they were able to fish and hunt. Some of the treaties signed allowed them to still hunt and fish whereas others allowed them to do neither. The third and final point is talking about how indigenous people’s history of hunting before settlers. The four points used in that paragraph were the methods they used to hunt and fish.

The four methods were bows and arrows, snares and traps, spears, and nets. Bows and arrows, and snares and traps were methods used for hunting. Bows and arrows were used on bigger animals like deer, elk, and bison whereas snares and traps were used mainly for the fur trade. This means once they caught the animal, they would only have use for the skin sometimes it was also used for food. Spears and nets were used mainly on the coast of Canada for fishing. Spears were more common to use however nets were most likely easier to use because of the degree of difficulty it takes to use.

Stand Up Paddle Fishing vs. Kayak Fishing

As one of the most popular recreational activity, fishing has always been the first choice of many people for a relaxed, enjoyable time. In recent years, people have been trying new ways to make fishing more interesting. Now we have stand-up paddle fishing and kayak fishing. Stand-up paddle boarding gained its popularity in recent years and along with it comes SUP fishing. But is it any better than the more conventional kayak fishing? Let’s find out.

Costs

When trying to draw a comparison between fishing kayak and fishing paddle, the aspect of price will pop up almost instantly. Here’s an average retail price of both water sports devices:

  • Fishing kayaks: $600-$2,000
  • Fishing paddle boards: $500-$2,000

They both lie within the same price range so you might want to look at other features to find out a deciding factor to help you make the decision.

Fishing Capabilities

Generally, fishing SUPs have better fishing capabilities than kayaks. As you can tell by its name, you will need to stand on it while trying to catch fish. This is especially advantageous as you can see the fish nearby more clearly and you’ll have a better angle for casting, as opposed to kayaking.

Almost all fishing SUPs feature bungee cords on them. (The one thing that would make the fishing experience more enjoyable is a cooler. You can attach one for storage of fish or for sitting on when fishing. You also get to bring food and drinks along for the journey.

Both fishing SUPs and fishing kayaks are very maneuverable compared to normal boats. What this means is that you’ll be able to easily locate fish on ‘hot spots.’ Fishing SUP boards are especially handy when you need to sneak up on your prey: kayaks are somewhat noisy in the waters.

Transportation

While it’s easier for you to transport SUP fishing boards, you’ll need more than a small vehicle to transport fishing kayaks to a body of water. When it’s needed, you can always deflate an inflatable SUP and roll it up to put it in a bag for easy transportation. So the next time you go on a vacation, you can consider bringing your fishing SUP along for a nice and relaxed session of fishing.

Physical Constraints

As is mentioned previously, fishing kayaks allow you to sit for the whole time to reduce tiredness while SUP fishing boards require you to stand to paddle and fish. There’s a huge difference between the ways you fish on them and if you have strain issues on your lower body, then fishing kayaks might be a safer choice. Generally, fishing kayaks require fewer muscle movements and strain according to how they are designed.

Although fishing kayaks are better for low-exercise movements, paddling is perfect if you want to exercise more. You’ll do your favorite activity along with good exercise for your whole body.

So, which is the best option?

Paddle boards need high balancing postures and control, which may affect your fishing especially if you’re new to fishing paddle boards. Experienced SUP’ers will have a way of getting around this. So, while choosing the best floatation device for fishing, its crucial to consider your fishing habits as well. Fishing paddle boards will do better in calmer waters while kayaks are proved to be better in murky or rougher water bodies like oceans. Both kayaks and fishing paddle boards have excellent capabilities in waters but you’ll have to dig deeper to find out the one that’ll suit your fishing needs.

The Effects Of Fishing On The Environment

Introduction

Today we will be looking into the impacts that fishing has on the environment, about how when we fish we connect to God’s marvelous creation and about some management strategies we together as a community can implant to minimise the impact fishing has on our beautiful environment. Why is fishing considered an enjoyable activity?

Many old and wise people associate fishing with health and happiness. If you think about fishing , it is one of a few ways for human beings to survive. and when you think about fishing in abstract terms, the images of vast horizons and of the sea, instantly calmness comes to your mind. the serenity and calmness that you feel while sitting on the bank of the river catching fish, makes you forget even the most complex problems and worries in your life and you find yourself in a distant land far from the miseries of the artificial world.

In this modern technological world when everything is available at a single touch on our mobile phones, people still go fishing, and here is a list of 6 reasons why fishing is considered such an enjoyable activity.

1. stress relief

A wide range of people go fishing, and if you ask different people why it is such an enjoyable hobby, they will answer that fishing gives them relief from stress, and they feel free. Freedom is what you experience when you go fishing. when you go fishing to a stream or to a pond, you experience and see an environment that is entirely different from your ordinary life, you appreciate and enjoy this new environment. if you interact with nature, you become a part of it, and this makes you forget all the worries of the world.

2. health benefits

our routine lives are so mechanized that we sit all day at our homes on social media or watching netflix without ever realizing how disastrous that is for us. Another dilemma of the modern age is that more than 50% of people are overweight and one reason is because people sit all day long. If we go fishing, we become active and feel encouraged. fishing promotes a healthier way of life.

3. recreation

Fishing is a recreation where even the worst day, when you catch no fish at all, it is 10 times better than the time spent at home doing chores. Many people comment that the pleasure of fishing lies in the activity itself, not in how many fish are caught. pinning insects in your hooks, putting them in water for hours and waiting, and then finally catching a fish are truly spectacular feelings.

4. fishing for food

Nowadays we can get food in an instant, but the healthiest and most natural food that nature offers us is waiting for us in a stream. In fact, most people prefer fresh meat rather than buying preserved meat in a can. Wild fish is rich in protein and contains little cholesterol, making it a favorite food for many.

5. the thrill and challenge

Most people love fishing because of the thrill and the challenge involved. it really is a thrill sitting in a boat or on the bank with the anticipation of a fish snagging your lure, I for one know I feel a thrill. the biggest challenge lies in the methods you use to catch fish, and not all are guaranteed success, which is why so many people learn from these challenges.

And last but not least

6. paying tribute to God for the wonderful creation of nature

When we go fishing, we pay tribute to God for creating nature and we show our thankfulness for the things that nature has given us, and such precious things are worth living for.

The environmental impacts associated with catching and farming fish affect the health of our oceans, fisheries, communities and economies around the world. Some of the many examples of Impacts that fishing has on the environment include ….

Habitat damage

Fishing gear of any kind particularly fishing gear that is heavy or large can harm the environment while catching fish. Some fishing methods, such as dredging and bottom trawling, impact the sea-floor habitat. In areas with sensitive, bottom-living species, such as deep-sea corals, fishing gear can cause long-term damage, and damage the creatures living inside it. Another fishing method we use is catching fish with nets on some occasions the net can break and fall into the ocean. Net’s being made out of plastic instantly has a severe effect on marine life being 100,000 marine animals dying from plastic litter in the ocean by mistaking it for jellyfish.

Another example of an effect that fishing has on the environment is Pollution!

Waste from fish-feed and faeces can pollute the water and seabed around intensive fish farms leading to poor water and sediment quality. Chemicals and pesticides (used in some fish farming to control diseases) can also contaminate the area and impact surrounding marine life and their habitats.

And out of all the threats facing the oceans today, overfishing takes the greatest toll on sea life …. and people. Overfishing occurs when fish are caught at a rate higher than the population is able to replace itself. Collapse will occur if overfishing is prolonged over time. A government analysis indicates that 17.5% of Australian fish stocks are overfished or are being fished too heavily.

Why does overfishing matter?

Overfishing endangered ocean ecosystems and the billions of people who rely on seafood as a key source of protein. Without sustainable management, our fisheries collapse — and we face a food crisis!

As seen from the examples of effects and impacts overfishing has on the environment above we can conclude that with all of the issues and many more the environment is at risk.

Fishing allows individuals to connect with God’s creation by being one with nature. When we go fishing, we pay tribute to God for creating nature and we show our thankfulness for the things that nature has given us. When we catch a fish we need to remember to thank God as he was the creator of life and therefore the environment and the incredible creatures that live within it.

The Bible informs us in the passage of “Genesis” that God created the fish of the sea. He created everything and that means every conceivable kind of fish. He created trout, salmon,Tuna, Flatthead; He created sharks, octopuses and whales. ect

The life of Jesus Christ revolved around fishing in many ways. Many of the disciples were fishermen. Simon, Andrew, James and John are all named. Here is a passages in the bible that refers to fishing.

Luke records the story of three of these men fishing,(Mark 1:16-20) and Jesus watching from the shore of Lake Gennesaret (Lake Galilee). “They had quit fishing for the day because there seemed to be no fish. Jesus asked to be taken out into the water a short distance in order to speak to the throngs of people who had gathered. After Jesus finished teaching, he told Simon to go out into the deep water and let down his nets. Simon admitted they had fished all day and caught nothing, but did as Jesus asked. The nets were soon so full of fish, they almost broke and the fishermen were amazed at how many fish they had caught.”

What is the Laudato Si?

Laudato Si was a letter the pope wrote expressing his concern for the environment.

“ Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home is the new appeal from Pope Francis addressed to ‘every person living on this planet’ for an inclusive dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. Pope Francis calls the Church and the world to acknowledge the urgency of our environmental challenges and to join him in embarking on a new path. This encyclical is written with both hope and resolve, looking to our common future with candor and humility. The title is taken from the first line of the encyclical, ‘Laudato si’, mi Signore,’ or ‘Praise be to you, my Lord.’ In the words of this beautiful canticle, Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us. The encyclical is divided into six chapters which together provide a thorough analysis of human life and its three intertwined relationships: with God, with our neighbor, and with the earth.”

The world’s oceans are so big we thought for a long time that there was nothing humans could do to hurt them. Now we’re at the edge of facing a global collapse of our fisheries, thanks to overfishing we are looking at something like endangered fish before the year of 2048. Billions of people around the world rely on fish as a source of protein and fishing is the principal livelihood of millions. Maintaining the balance of exquisite life in our oceans is just as critical to life on land. But many of the world’s fisheries have been pushed beyond their biological limits. Some are even at the point of collapse. Overfishing is a major problem globally, due largely to poor fisheries management and Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fishing. But, there are a few key solutions to overfishing that have been successfully implemented around the world., to help minimise overfshing because ther are not plenty more fish left in the sea.

Currently, less than two percent of the world’s oceans are protected in marine parks; and less than one percent of the oceans are protected from any kind of fishing. More no-catch zones must be established to allow fish populations and their ecosystems to recover and replenish themselves to ensure fishing for future generations.

STOP TRAWLING

Trawling drags huge nets through the ocean that scoop up every animal and the ecosystem in its pathway, resulting in massive wasteful bycatch – dead fish are returned to the sea because they weren’t the target fish. We don’t have that kind of sea life to waste. Though there are many programs that focus on decreasing by-catch, and worldwide there are small regions where bottom trawling is banned or limited, these measures aren’t enough. Trawling needs to be banned outright.

FISHING PERMITS

By having fishing permits we are reducing the amount of people fishing and by that we are reducing teh amount of fish caught. I f someone fishes in a marine protected area their fishing permit can be taken away from them.

These management strategies for fishing also known as fishing rights can, with the help of community working together can get implanted to stop overfishing and minimise the effects that fishing is having on the environment. So on that note I encourage each and every one of you to get a fishing permit, dont fish in marine protected area’s and stop trawling.

Conclusion

In conclusion fishing is an enjoyable hobby that lots of people enjoy, but we do need to be causious about too much fishing which can then lead to overfishing which will have a severe effect on the oceons environment. We can stop this by following fishing rules and regulations and by implanting the management strategies as shown above into our economy we can therfore save the fish population. This is Tiana saying Thankyou for watching the environment matters channel 7 and goodnight

Essay on My Fishing Trip in Miami and How It Changed My Views

At the age of seven, me and my brothers went to Miami for summer vacation. We had decided amongst us to go on a fishing trip. I was very excited to go on this fishing trip as my brothers had done once before and told me that it’s a unique kind of experience.

As we were in Miami, one of my elder brothers contacted the Miami Fishing charters company to organize our fishing trip. As the bookings were done, the next day we went on a special adventure in the ocean. I was so completely absorbed in my thoughts that the lengthy journey to our favorite fishing spot seemed fleeting. I fumbled for my fishing pole. Dangling the humble rods end over the edge of the boat, I released the pole on the reel and put it in the ocean water. Once I sat back to wait for an attack on the lure. And suddenly a sharp tug on the line pulled me to my feet faster than an electric shock. I bounded to the pole and I was so nervous that when I tugged on the rod, I nearly plunged headlong over the side of the boat and saw the mahi-mahis. The mahi-mahis skin gleamed with radiant hues of blue, green, and yellow in a breathtaking spray of surf. Brilliant sunlight beamed upon the spectacle, giving life to a scene which exploded into a furious spectrum of color. The exotic fish tumbled majestically back to the sea amidst a blast of foam. With this incredible display, the fish was transformed from a pitiful victim to a brilliant specimen of life. I needed to have the fish at any cost.

Upon catching the fish, I was very happy. Despite my brothers’ cheers and praises, I rode back to shore in bitter silence. I could not help thinking about the vast difference between the magnificent creature which I saw jump in the sea and the pathetic beast which I saw gasping for life in the bloody pit of the boat. What struck me most forcefully on that day, though, was the realization that I was the sole cause. Had I not dropped the hook into the water, the fish undoubtedly would still be alive. I, alone, had killed this fish.

Although my views about many things, hunting and fishing included, have changed considerably. One cannot dispute the frightening potential of the human race to induce the permanent extinction of every life form on the planet. Even though I was happy before when I caught the fish, but then I felt extremely terrible after I saw the fish dying in front of me. We must keep one thing in mind that all forms of life on earth are of natural habitat. One cannot dispute the frightening potential of the human race to induce the permanent extinction of every life form on the planet.

Fishing as a Great Family Activity: Essay

The family is the most important thing for everyone, that’s why the time we spend together has a lot of value. Doing family activities reinforces the trust of each other and allows us to get to know each other better and build better family ties. With the days of good weather, one of the activities we can do is a day of family fishing.

So, what makes fishing a great activity for the whole family? Firstly, fishing is a type of therapy that helps lower the rates of stress in people. When we fish, we are focused on this activity, so we forget about our worries for a while. In spite of this, we are exercising when we shake the rod and pull a fish that bites the hook. In addition, when we fish, we are in the middle of nature, connected to the lake and everything that surrounds it, which helps us to relax with the sound of the river and the fresh air that comes to our faces. And the final benefit is that fishing is suitable for everyone, so it is perfect to do it with the whole family, and it even becomes an activity where we can make new friends with the same hobby.

Michigan is home to fishermen and enthusiasts who like to spend the fishing weekend. Here, everyone will find the best fly fishing in the country, as well as 5 of the 50 most special lakes to fish along with some 150 species of fish to fish among which are for example salmon, lake trout, or walleye. Offering a map with the most remarkable sites of Michigan to go fishing, the Family Friendly Fishing Waters project can help everyone find the perfect spot for a day or even a weekend of fishing with the family, complete with all the amenities.

What I think makes fishing such an attractive option for family activities is that the children take an active part, which in turn has a positive effect on family relationships. For example, they can help unhook the fish, put the fishing rod in the appropriate place, hook the bait, or fix the links or the entanglements, etc. This can not only be a very interesting activity but also a manifestation of trust on the part of parents.

In conclusion, there are many benefits of spending a day of family fishing, and more if we have all the incredible spaces in Michigan.
