The lectures for this week discuss three different kinds of film/TV narrative: classical (Stagecoach), post-classical/complex (Westworld), and art cinema (The Rider). Select 3 specific scenes of the following episode of Reservation Dogs and discuss how mise-en-scene, editing, sound, and cinematography function in relation to the narrative. Address the following:
How can we consider this episode as adjacent to the Western genre?
In what ways is it responding to classic Western tropes?
In what ways is it subverting/transcending these tropes?
Each scene analysis should be 170-200 words minimum and address at least three elements of film form.
