Relational Practice: Reflections on Family Nursing

Introduction

Engagement with resource family provides nurses with opportunities to apply perspective theories learnt in class. Scientists have developed theories to govern the domain of family nursing. Doane and Varcoe (2005) posit that experience with family is the best source of knowledge for family nursing (p.4). However, a nursing student can learn about family nursing through other sources including learning activities, CD discussion, and reflection.

Theories and definitions learnt in class offer nurses with only the structures for family nursing. Although theories and definition provide knowledge useful for family nursing, they do not reveal the challenges and complexities unique to every new family event (Doane & Varcoe, 2005, p.4). They do not predict family emotions and behavior that nurse experiences when having a moment with a family in line of duty. This essay describes an experience with resource family and its effects on family nursing knowledge.

Reflections

Habits and conducts

Objectivity means looking at things or situations as they are rather than from ones emotions or feelings. Philosophers believe that individuals can detach themselves from their own feelings or interpretations and evaluate situations in an objective way. Indeed, according to the Cartesian view, objective truth is not only possible, but also desirable (Doane & Varcoe, 2005, p.4). In this light, I tried so much to desist from the emotional involvement of the family situation and perform my responsibility on evidence-based practice.

The resource family allowed me to realize my ability to persuade people to do things they previously objected or did not favor. The experience taught me to address any health event with passion because it motivates a nurse to search all the possible interventions and settle on the best. In addition, I realized that respect is fundamental for a nurse to win the trust of a patient and subsequent compliance to any developed intervention.

Nevertheless, often I will find myself struggling to develop a personal interpretation of a family in terms of its socioeconomic status. My interpretation will influence my assessment of the family situation. For instance, I may connect a problem to poverty and dismiss other possibilities. I learned that I should not make conclusions based on my observation of family conditions; rather I should rely on information obtained from family members.

Ethical issues may arise in some family situations. In instances where a child is concerned, I may be required to seek consent from parents or the parent may respond on behalf of the child. This situation poses a challenge in the intervention choice because the information may be inaccurate or biased. Far worse is the situation in which a family member may be terminally ill. In this circumstance, I may be compelled to train other members to care for the terminally ill member so that in the absence of a nurse, they know what to do. However, other members often neglect the sick person, something that usually makes me guilty so that I consider spending most of my time with the terminally ill person and abandon my other responsibilities.

In some situations, ethical issues may arise which may compel a nurse to take legal action. In circumstances of conflict within the family, older family members may abuse and/or neglect the children. Such situations may demand a shift from objective stance to subjective, wherein I may be forced to seek intervention of agencies such as child support, a condition that makes me uneasy towards the decisions I made.

Although expert knowledge can enlighten the nursing practice, the problem often arise when expert knowledge is incorporated and applied as if it represents the outright truth about families. I released that when I assess a family, it is assumed that the conclusion I arrive at reflect the absolute truth of the familys health and healing situation. However, most often than not, objective information of a family is limited (Doane & Varcoe, 2005, p.5). In various perspectives, objective knowledge is superficial because it most often exposes only that which a nurse can access externally.

Relational practice

Relationship is fundamental to each event of nursing practice. We draw a relationship between two things viz. events or conditions. In addition, we can relate the same situation at different times. A nurse can tell whether the health situation is improving or worsening by relating to a previous or present health situation. Moreover, by relating an idea to health event, I am able to understand an intervention that best suits the situation.

Relationship may influence knowledge. In fact, Doane and Varcoe (2005) argue that, relationships are a site for developing and acting on knowledge (p.174). For instance, I am able to identify how a relationship with other families has altered my knowledge of health events in relevance to family situation. Particularly, relationships with families and other people have altered my knowledge in some ways including:

  1. Through relationships, I have been able to exchange knowledge with the families or people I work;
  2. I have opportunity to learn from the families and become better informed; and
  3. The families knowledge and mine is developed, expanded, and enacted.

The proceeding paragraph relates my experience with a family situation. This encounter helped me understand myself regarding my habit and conduct. This relational moment was fundamental for shaping my habit and conduct as a nurse.

Relational moment with family

One day as I was attending to a car accident casualty, I walked quietly into her room and busily checked her IV, her tubes, and dressings. Throughout my task, I took caution not to wake her because I silently did not desire to engage her in any activity at that moment. The client suffered a fatal car accident that caused the physician to amputate her legs.

Her two months old baby was sleeping in the crib, and as I was winding up my tasks, the child started crying. I picked her up as slowly as I could, fearing that she might wake her mother up. Just then, the husband walked into the house, greeted me, and placed a soft kiss on his sick wife. He inquired her progress from me, which I responded in short form answers offering no observation for fear of arousing emotional events with him.

Clearly, I did not want any emotional involvement with the family. This was inappropriate because apparently the family needed emotional support and encouragement to move on with live; something I was not willing to give. Hence, I have learned that a nurse should offer emotional support and encouragement to help speed up recovery.

Factors that hinder nurse-patient relationship

Many nurses choose to desist from developing any relationship with patients. The authors explored the reasons why nurses choose to take that stance. Often, nurses assume that they must know how to manage a patients discomfort (Doane & Varcoe, 2005, p.176); therefore, they resort to just giving advice or decide not to talk about challenging situations. A nurse owns discomforts about his/her inability to improve the situation and/or the uncertainty of what may transpire sometimes causes nurses to distance from the familys emotion. A nurse may occasionally withdraw because they do not wish to experience such an in-depth emotion and pain.

In addition, nurses may distance themselves partially because of the messages they receive with respect to that which is and is not necessary and valuable in nursing practice. Regrettably, it is evident that nurses undervalue other nurses for being excessively emotional or involved (Doane & Varcoe, 2005, p.5). Therefore, nurses develop and promote emotional distance so that emotional involvement does not match with the general work pattern whatsoever. In fact, during their free time most nurses usually decide to sit down at the desk engaging with peers instead of patients and their families.

Conclusion

The nurses habits of distancing themselves from emotional engagement with family hinder their ability to honor, respect, and sustain peoples health and healing process. This detachment diminishes their capacity to guarantee that they are fully knowledgeable on top of being informed about families (Doane & Varcoe, 2005, p.260). In this regard, I appreciate relational practice as highly focused and deliberate. Nevertheless, I will take into account that the goals and assumption driving me should be different from those that guide me when I am practicing from a business perspective, a perspective of liberal individualism, or a biomedical perspective.

The Lifestyle Prescription Strategy

Nutritional therapy and lifestyle modification are critical to helping patients prevent or manage the disease for two reasons. First, their application allows a person to focus on something new. The daily performance of a specific action will bring more diversity to the patients life and make life more fulfilling and exciting. This approach will improve the condition of patients, for example, with heart disease, which is the most numerous category (Leading Causes of Death, 2022). Second, focusing on a new routine or hobby will allow the patient to think less about their problems and move on.

One smart outcome goal I have chosen for myself is to feel less stressed and more concentrated. As lifestyle prescriptions to achieve this goal are: Get up earlier in the morning (about 6 a.m.), a glass of water every morning to wake up a body, yoga activities everyday morning, make a plan for the day and become aware through self-exploration.

Changes I have prescribed to have a healthier life depend on my morning routine. The early morning rise will make it clear that there is still a long way to go to achieve the goals. The glass of water will help to activate the body and adjust it to the working day. Yoga will improve concentration and level of calm and help to relieve stress. Planning your day and compiling specific goals will not only help you understand the goals of life but increase the level of concentration on actual events.

I believe that the potential of long-term effectiveness of the Lifestyle Prescription strategy is effective and it can significantly improve the well-being of the patient. The impact this course has had on me is the desire for more profound research into specific improvements, such as morning routine. Applying this to my life and determining the positive effects of this process is an exciting and vital factor for me as a future healthcare professional. Before writing lifestyle prescriptions for patients, I must study their features and practical application in detail. If I do that, Ill be able to recommend them to my patients.

The World Cup Preparations in Qatar

Introduction

World Cup is a famous football competition organized every four years by the International Association of Football Federation (FIFA) and held in various countries. It is one of the most popular sporting events that attract millions of viewers worldwide, along with the numerous tourists who come to a hosting country, thus creating substantial market value and investment opportunities (Hundt & Horsch, 2018). Since football has expanded its popularity globally, many countries, including ones in the Middle East, aspire to host such an important event. Qatar is a small Middle Eastern country with a population of about 2.7 million, most of whom are expatriates from other regions (Human Rights Watch, 2019). The 2022 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to take place in Qatar, has been mired in controversy since the news of the nations successful bid was announced in 2010. Therefore, the theme of this essay is the impact of the World Cup in Qatar on human lives. The question is whether the lives lost from 2010 to up to now during the construction of necessary infrastructure for the event were worth it. Qatar has displayed a low level of responsibility for the workers safety and lives, but the cause of construction-related deaths in the country is not exclusive to the event of the World Cup. Thus, the country should not deny the opportunity of hosting the event, but more efforts must be put into increasing and monitoring the safety standards.

The Impact of the World Cup in Qatar on Human Lives

Qatar has faced significant criticism from human rights groups over its treatment of construction workers. According to Amnesty International (2019), Qatars labor system ensures that migrant workers are tied to their employers, denying them the right to leave the country or change jobs without their employers consent. That has led to reports of workers being subjected to dangerous working conditions and low pay. Eventually, the various media share estimations of 6,500 to 15,000 deaths related to the World Cup construction activities (Walter & Ford, 2022). In response, Qatar has increased its efforts to reform its labor laws and improve the safety of its workers. In particular, the government has passed a new labor law and ratified two international labor conventions as evidence that it is taking the issue seriously (Qatar News Agency, 2019). Despite Qatars progress towards reform, there are still concerns that migrant workers are being exploited and that the lives lost in constructing the World Cup groundwork from 2010 were not worth the cost. According to a recent study, construction workers in Qatar display a low level of safety awareness and safety gears knowledge, while employers tend to put production ahead of safety (Ajayi, Adegbenro, Alaka, Oyegoke, & Manu, 2021). Therefore, Qatars government and world agencies should intervene in the matter and influence the developers to ensure the proper safety conditions for construction objects.

Furthermore, the 2022 World Cup preparations in Qatar since 2010 have raised numerous concerns about migrant labor in the state. In particular, most construction employees in Qatar are primarily from Nepal, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and other emerging economies (Walter & Ford, 2022). The migrant workers were subject to various forms of systemic exploitation, including withheld wages, withheld passports, and false promises of better wages and working conditions (Human Rights Watch, 2019). The International Labor Organization has urged Qatar to reform its labor laws, but the country has so far failed to do so. That has led some to argue that these lives were not worth the cost of hosting the World Cup (Human Rights Watch, 2019). However, proponents of the World Cup in Qatar argue that the country has a right to host the tournament and that the event will bring much-needed economic development to the region. They have also contended that the migrants are willing participants in their exploitation and benefit from the opportunity to work and make money in Qatar (Human Rights Watch, 2019). On the other hand, regardless of ones opinion on the matter, it is clear that these workers deaths are a tragedy and a reminder of the need for greater regulation of working conditions. Therefore, the Qatar government must ensure that these workers are adequately protected, compensated, and treated with respect and dignity.

Besides, accidents on construction sites in Qatar have been a major problem in recent years, particularly in the context of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. In the run-up to the tournament, the number of construction-related fatalities rose to an alarming level, with an average of one worker dying every two days in 2019 (Amnesty International, 2019). Therefore, the International Labor Organization has condemned Qatar for failing to protect migrant workers and has called for immediate reforms to the kafala system. The kafala system is the labor-regulation system used in Qatar and other countries in the region. Under this system, all foreign workers must be sponsored by their employer and cannot leave the country or change jobs without their employers permission (ter Haar, 2019). The system has been criticized for creating an environment where workers are vulnerable to mistreatment and abuse. However, in response to the criticism, Qatar has implemented several reforms to improve the labor conditions of migrant workers. That includes a new minimum wage law, the abolition of the kafala system, and the introduction of independent labor courts and labor unions (Amnesty International, 2019). Abolishing the kafala system has helped to ensure that workers rights and freedom are respected, including the right to equal pay, freedom of movement, and the right to change jobs. Additionally, it has made it easier for migrants to access legal redress when they face abuses or exploitation. Without the kafala system, workers can report their employers and seek protection from the state. While human rights organizations have welcomed those reforms, there is still much work to be done to ensure that the rights of migrant workers are adequately protected.

Furthermore, the ethical considerations of the extensive loss of lives are complex and multifaceted. On the one hand, obvious human costs are associated with the lives lost due to accidents on construction sites in Qatar. Those losses cannot be taken lightly and should be weighed heavily in any ethical evaluation of the situation. On the other hand, the recent fact-checking material by Walter and Ford (2022) suggests that among all 15,799 migrants who died in Qatar in 2011-2020, only 40 worked at the World Cup sites. In addition, there are potential benefits associated with hosting the World Cup. These include the potential for economic development, increased tourism, and international recognition. The government estimates that the World Cup would add $20 billion to Qatars GDP (Amnesty International, 2019). That involves investments in new stadiums, hotels, and other infrastructure and increased spending from tourists and media. The World Cup would also boost tourism, with an estimated 1.5 million people visiting during the tournament (Amnesty International, 2019). That influx of visitors could provide a major economic boost for Qatars hospitality industry. Finally, hosting the World Cup would bring international recognition and prestige to Qatar, as it would be the first country in the Middle East to host the tournament.

Conclusion

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar has been surrounded by controversy since its inception in 2010. The main point of contention is human rights abuses and numerous reported worker deaths due to harsh working conditions. The lives of those workers cannot be accounted for in money, yet the potential for economic development, increased tourism, and job opportunities that the World Cup brings are undeniable. The human cost of the World Cup in Qatar has been heartbreaking; hence, the decision to award the tournament to Qatar has been widely criticized. However, hosting the World Cup is an opportunity for Qatar to showcase its culture, strengthen its ties with the international community, and provide an economic boost. Qatar has also taken steps to improve working conditions, and it is hoped that the World Cup will act as an impetus for further reforms. Therefore, it may be impossible to account for the human cost in economic terms, yet it is clear that the World Cup has the potential to bring positive change to Qatar and its citizens. The World Cup may bring attention to the plight of the workers and inspire further reforms.

Family: Definition and Connections

Family may seem straightforward, but there is not a single, clear description of what it is. In its simplest form, a family is a collection of people related by blood or law. However, family means much more to many people, and even the seemingly straightforward concept of genetic ties can be complex. The two articles and films central theme is family, what family means to people and what it brings to their life.

The first article, written by Maïa de la Baume, introduced the case of babies switched at birth (Baume, 2015). In these cases, the storys main characters have shown a common belief that family members should not always be connected by blood. The natural parents are those who have brought the child up, not those who have given them birth. Actual family members support each other despite any cases, actions and behavior. The films author believes that family is where people feel good and safe and support each other. From the authors perspective, family members dine together every night, as well as the privacy of their own space. The author also does not share an opinion of the importance of blood connection between family members. The following article by Lisa Damour focuses more on the importance of having dinner with family. Through sharing dinners with their children, parents can demonstrate their warmth and interest in their childrens lives, and the children can share their problems, concerns, and achievements (Damour, 2016). After such experience, teenagers are most likely to enjoy abundant psychological health and stay out of trouble.

Talking about the legal definition of the family, there may be situations when this conflicts with human definitions. This method of defining the family has the drawback that it has little to do with the psychological, supporting, and dependent ties at play. Sometimes, even having parental rights does not automatically make someone a parent. Some parents fail to uphold their legal and moral obligations, which can result in their childrens physical and mental abuse.

Overall, while people can define family through their direct legal and genetic ties to others, there is more to family bonds than these fundamental ideas. People can even use a different language to refer to their special loved ones as a family if they choose. What matters most is that a true family fosters emotional and spiritual connection among its members via shared values, beliefs, experiences, pastimes, and unfailing, nonjudgmental support.

Paradigms of Human Interaction

Introduction

In chapter 4 of his book, Covey argues that in order to establish effective interdependent relationships, people should strive to create win-win situations. Such situations are mutually beneficial for each side. According to Stephen Covey, there are six paradigms of interaction between people (Covey, 2004).

Discussion

In the 4th chapter, he considers the advantages of one of them it is a Win-Win situation when both win. Agreements or solutions are mutually beneficial and satisfy both parties (Covey, 2004). The author points out that the best option is to create winwin situations. With the Win-Lose or Lose-Win paradigms, only one side gets what it wants at the moment, but the results will negatively affect the relationship between the parties to the transaction in the future. However, the Win-Win option discussed in this chapter is important to use as a backup (Covey, 2004). When a person knows they have another problem-solution option, it frees them from having to manipulate people and promote their own plans. To achieve a Win-Win situation, Covey suggests focusing on results rather than methods, on problems rather than people.

Conclusion

Despite the advice of the author of the chapter, there are situations in which Win-Win is impossible, or its application will not bring a solution to the problem. For example, a situation may arise when mutual concessions of opponents to each other are necessary to achieve Win-Win. This means that everyone will receive 50% satisfaction. Part of the needs of each opponent will remain unaccounted for. This will inevitably lead to new disputes, so in this case Win-Win will be an unsuccessful strategy. Therefore, despite the fact that Win-Win may seem to be one of the solutions, in some cases it is only a temporary measure.

Naming Our Offspring: The Rise of Individuality and Unique Names

A sociology book called The Family: Diversity, Inequality, and Social Change explores how families are evolving in modern society. The book discusses a wide range of family-related subjects, including gender roles, marriage, parenting, and family diversity (Cohen, 2015). Sociologist and demographer Philip N. Cohen use statistics and research to examine how families are changing and how these changes are affecting society as a whole. The book delves deeply into the patterns and trends that are influencing modern families, such as the rise of single-parent households, the loss of marriage, and the widening diversity of families (Cohen, 2015). The decreasing popularity of the name Mary in the US is a reflection of the growing individualism and self-expression of parents, who are opting for distinctive and uncommon names for their children rather than sticking to conventional naming practices.

The diversity of families is one of the books primary themes. According to the author, families nowadays are more diverse in terms of colour, ethnicity, and sexual orientation, and this variety is significantly altering society (Cohen, 2015). He looks at how different kinds of families are affected by social change and inequality and how these experiences affect their daily lives. The book also examines how gender relations are being impacted by how mens and womens roles and expectations inside families are evolving (Cohen, 2015). It analyzes the way technology, the media, and other cultural elements are influencing life as well as how families are adjusting to these changes.

The emphasis on individuality in society underwent a considerable shift in the 20th century. Individualism and self-expression became increasingly crucial to humans, and this trend was reflected in how parents called their children. Following conventional naming practices, children used to frequently be given names that were variations of their parents or other family members names. However, as the 20th century went on, more parents started going against tradition and picking out odd and original names for their children (Cohen, 2015). This custom had its origins in the idea that children should uphold the family name and show respect for their ancestors. Additionally, it served as a means of preserving cultural practices and family customs. The chosen names, which were typically derived from those of significant family members, such as grandparents, were believed to bring luck and blessings to the child (Cohen, 2015). This custom was widespread in societies that placed great significance on ancestors and family.

Parents are now more inclined to select names that have special meanings for their children, such as the name of a favourite place or character from a book or a name that is distinctive and stands out. Additionally, they could opt for names with specific significance or ties to their cultural or ethnic background. This movement in naming practices reflects the change in societal values and the growing significance placed on uniqueness and self-expression.

The growth of celebrity-inspired names or well-known fictional characters is another indication of this tendency toward identifying children after people that have particular importance to them. Some parents pick names that are representative of their passions, like the names of their favourite bands or sports teams. Additionally, some parents pick names that are symbolic of anything spiritual or environmental in order to express their personal values or worldview. As they want their childs name to reflect their familys history and identity, many parents are also selecting names that are representative of their cultural or ethnic origin. As more parents choose names from many cultures and languages, this has increased the diversity of names given to infants.

The decreasing popularity of the name Mary in the United States reflects the tendency toward individualism and parents desire to give their children unusual names. Following conventional naming practices, it used to be typical for kids to be named after their parents or other family members (Cohen, 2015). However, as society has developed and placed more value on originality, more parents are opting to give their kids unordinary names that deviate from the mainstream.

This trend toward individuality and distinctive naming may be observed clearly in the fall of the name Mary in the United States. The Social Security Administration found that between 1880 and 1946, Mary was the most often used name for females born in the United States (Cohen, 2015). Mary, however, was no longer among the top 100 names by the 2000s and had fallen out of the top 10 by the 1970s (Cohen, 2015). This fall in popularity is a blatant sign that parents are opting for odd and uncommon names for their children instead of traditional, familiar names.

Additionally, the study by Philip N. Cohen, published in The Family: Diversity, Inequality and Social Change in 2015, demonstrates that the variety of names given to infants has been growing over time. African American, Latino, and Asian American families exhibit this trend the most, as they frequently name their children after members of their own ethnic communities (Cohen, 2015). This lends even more, credence to the notion that parents are eschewing conventional naming practices in favour of selecting names that are more distinctive and representative of their personal preferences and values.

The rise of individuality in the 20th century altered how parents chose names for their children. However, parents started to see naming their children as a method to reflect their own particular style and values as the emphasis on individuality grew (Cohen, 2015). The popularity of strange and uncommon names, as well as the growing diversity of baby names, are both indicators of this mindset change. Additionally, the advent of social media, which has given people a forum to express themselves and share their individuality with the world, is a reflection of the increase in individualism. Since everyone is urged to stand out in todays society, many parents now view giving their children a name as a method to express style and values as well as to offer their children a distinct personality.

In conclusion, the twentieth century brought a focus on individuality and opportunities for parents to choose more unique names for their children. This trend is reflected in the decline of traditional, common names, such as Mary, and the increasing diversity of names given to babies. It also reflects a shift in the way parents approach naming their children, viewing it as a way to express their own personal style and values. As society continues to place a greater emphasis on individualism, we can expect this trend towards unique and unusual names to continue. Modern parents are no longer constrained by conventional naming customs and have access to a wide selection of possibilities. They can select names from other cultures and languages, play around with different spellings, or even come up with completely original names.

Media Analyses: Sports Broadcast

Different types of news broadcasts are important for their own audience. The videos look, tone, message, and language have to correspond to the topic and the knowledge of people who are interested in watching this particular media piece. Sports broadcasts are a combination of serious news and entertainment, as any game can be considered a job, a competition, and a source of enjoyment for fans. Thus, the style of podcasts and news also mixes serious language and personal opinions to provide new information and engage viewers. The following paper analyzes an episode of the Peter King Podcast, Unpacking Fascinating Super Bowl, NFL Officiating Chemistry, published on the networks official YouTube channel NFL on NBC. The video demonstrates the unique features of a sports news broadcast through its use of specific terminology, assumed level of expertise from the audience, and a mix of information and entertainment.

First, one can note the unique tone of sports broadcasts, which mixes news and personal opinions. The podcast episode has the host and one guest who engage in informal conversation. The host shares a piece of information, and the two experts discuss the topic, relying on their knowledge and personal view of the situation. Thus, the tone is unofficial, as both speakers ensure to point out they are sharing only their own interpretation (NFL on NBC, 2023). Nevertheless, the review of each case is thorough and focused on details, facts, and the history of the event. For example, King and Simmons discuss the record of injuries for one athlete. They recall his medical history and previous cases where such injuries would require more rehabilitation to make a point about the athletes current state.

Second, the style of the broadcast implements elements of information and entertainment. First, the podcasts informative portion relates to the recent news discussion. In this case, both participants share what has happened, recalling performance, statistics, interviews, and statements made by athletes, critics, and other participants. Therefore, the viewer can learn more about the recent events in football. At the same time, the host and the guest present their view, which could be considered entertainment. Football, similar to other competitive games, is a type of personal interest for viewers. The discussion of football-related events is entertainment as well.

Another intriguing feature of sports broadcasts is the implied knowledge that the network and the hosts anticipate from the audience. Although the podcast introduces news, it is expected for viewers to understand the context of each event. For example, the players names are mentioned briefly to start the discussion, while the host assumes that the viewer knows their history and current record. Similarly, specific terminology related to the game is not explained. The broadcast may be too challenging to understand for somebody who does not know much about football. Therefore, it is apparent that the network expects to attract viewers acquainted with the terminology and historical facts used by sports broadcasters and analysts.

In conclusion, sports broadcasts unique style and tone attract viewers with previous knowledge and interest in the field. The host and the guests use specific terminology and discuss events in a way that may be difficult for a person without football knowledge to understand. The speakers share information about past events, official statistics, and history. However, it is implied that the audience is interested in sports as a source of entertainment. As a result, the reviewed podcast episode targets people passionate about football and looking for a mix of news, personal opinions, and a deeper analysis of their interests.

MLB and CBA: Consequences of a Lockout and Strikes

Lockouts and strikes are becoming more common in professional sports. MLB, NFL, NHL, and NBA teams have had eight labor disputes. According to Wen and Tsai (91), the NBA and players union have been operating under a CBA since 1998 that will last three more years. From 19981999, the NBA and players union had no agreement (Wen and Tsai 92). Wan et al. further state that both sides started talking before the 20112012 season to avoid canceling much of it. However, fundamental differences resulted in multiple reconciliation attempts, which led to a strike that lasted 223 days and revenue loss and the postponement of the World Series, among other things (Wen and Tsai 93). Other issues were work stoppages, the salary cap, and MLBs financial woes. Bill Clinton, the National Labour Relations Board, and others participated in the cases discussions and negotiations (Jehl). This paper will examine the ideas behind professional baseball unionization and how it affects players, managers, and the game itself. It will further discuss the baseball unions responsibilities regarding player pay, and compensation will also be covered, focusing on the variables that affect player compensation.

Scale and Scope of the Issue

Major League Baseball and the MLBPA negotiations happened last in 2016. According to Dobreva (148), everything under the current CBA, including the length of the season and the type of travel expenses paid to players, is governed by it. It also discusses the bigger games economics, such as arbitration and free agency. Owners kept the players off the field to pressure the union into hastening the unions negotiating position. In many ways, it is the opposite of a players strike. However, there is nothing for players to strike about because they are not paid during the offseason, and there are no games.

The league is open to specific changes but feels that significant league baseball players have the most remarkable structure of all professional sports unions, starting with baseball not having a strict pay cap. The players demand more significant change, starting with an end to the rebuilding cycle. The publics opinion of these conversations is influenced by some of the languages from the pandemic talks from last summer, but at least the parties are conversing. Is everything now done in good faith? Maybe not, but they will work it out when it comes down to the nitty-gritty.

In the event of a lockout, MLB would be suspended; clubs would not be permitted to make deals or sign free agents, and players would not be permitted to speak with coaches or management. Absent some other payment arrangement, such as deferred money, MLB players typically get their annual wages in installments during the regular season. During a winter lockout, they would not lose pay but would be barred from non-salary work advantages, including entry to training facilities. By adopting the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), athletes and their families might continue to get health care benefits at their own expense.

Relevant Issues

The relevant issues include the luxury tax, often the competitive balance tax. MLB is the only American major league without a wage cap out of the four. This agreement considers, among other things, the MLBPAs historical strength and the players readiness to walk out when owners seek wage caps, as previously done. Additionally, MLB players benefit from guaranteed contracts, giving them a competitive edge over players in other leagues. However, MLB is hardly a fully open market. A competitive balancing tax has been applied to MLB clubs since 2003 to prevent them from paying their players significantly higher salaries and perks than their competitors. Depending on how many years a team has over the barrier, teams who spend above that limit are subject to a tax ranging from 17.5% to 50% (Dobreva 150). Consequently, according to Jehl, it involves lowering draft pick compensation for signing a free agent from another team. MLB and the MLBPA have established limitations on what free agency entails and how soon players may achieve it since the 1970s.

Strategies and Tactics Used

The parties employed other strategies, such as alternatives, in which each offered the third party a choice. The owners and the workers union were responsible for providing options to each other. For a salary cap, there must first be a salary floor for teams, which is one of the many reasons the players went on strike. It was only one of several explanations. It meant that sections of a specific size would only have to pay their players a certain sum of money, an amount that would inevitably be less than what larger teams would have to pay.

The owners of MLB declared an impasse, and the salary cap was implemented, both harmful to the player unions. It made it harder for player unions to bargain for better salaries. This tactic backfired on the players and the league because it allowed management to enact more favorable policies. It meant that the plan fell flat on its face. The union members plan also included complaints to the National Labor Relations Board against the businesss owners (Ramshaw et al. 83). It was brilliant because it resulted in the owners being bound by the terms of the previous collective bargaining agreement and prevented them from making any changes until a new deal was reached or a good-faith impasse was reached. Taking this step demonstrates impressive intelligence and strategic thinking on the part of the union.

The Outcome of the Issues

A new agreement has occurred between MLB and CBA on the welfare of teams, players, and owners. While it is very similar to the old one, there are some significant differences. In 1996, after the strike ended, the owners and the players finally reached a collective bargaining agreement. The previous owners rejected a provisional arrangement in the end. In the end, the text of the new deal included several new provisions. According to Ramshaw et al. (89), it was the same as the prior CBA, except for a few tweaks on salary arbitration and free agency. During the negotiation, the players were overjoyed by the inclusion of these amendments. There was a significant increase in minimum salaries, which benefited players who were not making as much as veteran players or even the other typical players.

Teams with payrolls exceeding $51 million were forced to pay a specific amount, which was then combined to assist in financing the less financially secure teams. Until 2000, this tax increased gradually but steadily before leveling off (Wachfeild). The verdict in this case directly led to the implementation of new pay limitations for revenue sharing. In the end, an interleague schedule was agreed upon by both players and owners. Everyone engaged benefited from it, and it was nice to see Major League Baseball try something novel during a regular season.

It was a fascinating case that dragged on long before the parties could negotiate a settlement. Surprisingly and shockingly, this investigation involved many high-profile individuals, including former President Bill Clinton. It has been instructive to see the President take an active role in this issue, using his influence to push for productive negotiations. The negotiations and the process that led to the 1994 baseball strike were also fascinating. It is fascinating and unusual to learn that both parties were able to get something they wanted in the end, and they were able to work together to reach a compromise.

Ethical Viewpoint

MLB took the initiative to implement the lockout because it would much instead encourage the players to reach an agreement during the off-season than take the chance that players might strike during the season, costing them money and causing a myriad of scheduling issues. Nobody wants the season interrupted; owners stand to lose more in the form of T.V. agreements and gate receipts, while players stand to lose millions and a precious year of their already brief careers. However, they are also better positioned to take the hit with dire consequences. Due to the scheduling, owners may negotiate from a position of power in the off-season rather than during the playing season, when MLB would lock players rather than the players would refuse their labor.

Success or Failure of the Issue

Sports are not an exception to the rule that work stoppages are typical in unionized workforces. Although owner lockouts have completely replaced union strikes in professional sports, strikes are significantly more prevalent in the industry. Since the 19941995 baseball strike, every work stoppage in American professional sports has been an owner-initiated lockout, and the MLB lockout is continuing this trend. Additionally, every lockout has ended with significant union concessions. The next CBAs contained the owner-friendly policies of a hard wage cap, a harsh luxury tax, limitations on individual player pay, and a direct decrease of the players portion of income. They also cut the players part of revenue across the board.

Plan for Addressing the Issue

Due to the multiple stakeholders interested in the case, the proposition uses a distributive strategy approach. It is of the essence in helping address the several parties issues and concerns while ensuring a fair consensus (Dobreva 147). The distributive system will consider all parties negotiation needs and seek to achieve a desirable equilibrium balance. In the case of the Baseball Major League case in the U.S., when possible, all parties involved in the distribution process try to learn about the hopes and fears of the others involved. Even though they cannot divide the resource evenly, they can still negotiate its distribution. However, they can guarantee that the person will get exactly what they want. Thus, even if one party ends up with a smaller share than they had hoped for, they will still be happy with the distribution since they will get what they want.

In conclusion, there has been a significant transition in baseball unionization. This is because comparing the games quality and standards between its history and present demonstrates its progress. The game has evolved in terms of administrative prowess, the creation of policies, and modifications to game conventions.

Family Nurse Practitioners Application of Theories

Utility of knowledge of nursing theories

Understanding nursing theories is crucial in nursing practice because it facilitates effective application, processing of assessing patients needs and implementing appropriate care. In family care, the utility of knowledge derived from these theories ultimately creates a true baseline for cohesion, personal and family health growth. The thin line found in key ethical theories has led to the highly divergent application of ethics both at the hospital and homecare levels.

Basavanthappa (2007) points out that the satisfaction and usefulness that a nurse gains from understanding nursing theoretical concepts is important in designing interventions that are critical for meeting the healthcare needs of society. One such theory is Dorothy Orems selfhelp theory (Butts & Rich, 2011). This theory draws attention to questions that frequently recur in the theory. For instance, the meaning of nursing and boundaries of knowledge that exist in nursing as a field of practice is critical in this case. For example, when people make a judgment on nursing, what conditions do they follow? Therefore, it comes out clearly that something is not right and as such, it requires understanding and modulated orientation in forming a long-lasting image of nursing as a practice. However, as effective as the model may be, understanding its concepts may not be complete because it mainly focuses on treating illnesses while neglecting the dynamic nature of wellness and healthcare (Kollak & Kim, 2006).

The theory of nursing process by Ida Orlando is another critical model that provides the concept for best practices and a debate of its significance in nursing practice (Butts & Rich, 2011). Ida posits that the concept of good or bad has existed in the records of nursing as a practice. This consideration has brought about the inadequate meaning to nursing as a practice. The theory seeks to answer several questions on nursing. For example, what prompts nurses to take different actions during their duties? It also seeks to understand the key tenets of the correct relationship that exists between nurses and their patients. As such, it challenges a nurse to rise above the prevailing conditions and gather better understanding and comprehension. Indeed, both Orems and Orlandos theories seek to empower nurses by challenging them to take charge of nursing processes and maintain effectiveness (Kollak & Kim, 2006).

The effectiveness of contemporary nursing theories in relation to my practice

In my practice as a family nurse practitioner, contemporary nursing theories are very important in shaping how I carry out health service processes to expedite desired outcomes. The theories are dynamic in the sense that they aid a nurse in factoring in the need for generating a process that can facilitate a holistic healing process for a patient while anchoring the required relationship between key parties. For instance, the goal attainment theory by Imogene King indicates that nurses must set themselves as key components in addressing patients demands (Kollak & Kim, 2006). From this scenario, I note that patients problems become alleviated when a nurse makes it his/her goal to provide effective service. It challenges practitioners in family nursing to ensure that they assimilate modernistic approaches towards addressing each scenario by taking each patients situation as unique. The theories emphasize societal goals, roles, values and interest towards making nursing practice successful.

Perhaps, it is the functioning and orientation of the concepts in the theories that emphasize the need for extra levels of improvement. While trying to categorize good and bad nursing practices, the concepts are indeed critical. The requirements of the nurses to effectively analyze the situation and develop the correct perceptions in addressing patients problems are paramount. According to my opinion, the demand for improvement has diverse orientations and therefore should be employed on different platforms so that all players are actively involved in the process.

How Shootings Shaped Political Views, Perspectives, & Attitudes: Personal Essay

One frequently runs into many societal issues throughout their lifetime. Mass shootings, which have a significant impact on the political opinions, perspectives, and attitudes of the younger generation, are one of its causes. I believe that the threat of widespread shootings has widened the ideological divide between liberals and conservatives, those who support and oppose carrying firearms, and those who have differing views on mental illnesses.

Political perspectives influenced by the potential for shootings vary: I started to hold more conservative opinions. I think that the possibility of storing weapons at home will give me the opportunity to protect myself and my family (Gregory & Wilson para. 2). However, many of my peers, due to mass shootings, began to adhere to a more liberal position opposing the free possession of weapons.

The perspectives with which I began to look at education have also changed. Although many of my peers believe that this will increase anxiety in children and oppose such educational programs, I think it is absolutely necessary to conduct training in schools on the algorithm of actions in the event of a mass shooting (Gregory & Wilson para. 10).

My attitude towards people with mental illnesses has also changed. I think it is important to let instructors in an educational setting know about this even if many of my peers still think receiving treatment from a psychiatrist should remain confidential so they can pay closer attention to students who have this issue (Glastris para. 10).

Thus, I think that the tension caused by the threat of mass shootings is the cause of a major split in public opinion. This can cause misunderstandings between adherents of different political view, separating them and making the fight against the problem even more difficult.
