Chicano! History of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement
The 1960s was a turbulent decade in American history, fraught with conflicts over issues from Civil Rights to the war in Vietnam. The Mexican American Civil Rights Movement, one of the least studied social movements of the 1960s, encompassed a broad cross section of issues—from restoration of land grants, to farm workers rights, to enhanced education, to voting and political rights. The video documentary Chicano! History of the Mexican American Civil Rights Movement, a four-part documentary series, corrects this oversight. Ground-breaking for the material it covers, the series is one of the few to address the history of Mexican Americans in general and that of the Chicano Movement in particular; it is an indispensable resource for scholars and students.

Who Really Lived a “Wonderful Life”? George Bailey or Mr. Potter?
Consider the lives of the characters depicted in the film It’s a Wonderful Life, namely George Bailey and Mr. Potter. Mr. Potter is a very successful business person, who has made a lot of money and built a small empire for himself. While some of his dreams of taking over Bedford Falls and turning it into Pottersville are thwarted by the efforts of George, Mr. Potter is, so far we can tell, living the life he wants to live and achieving many (though not all) the things he finds valuable. By the end of the film, he has suffered no obvious ill consequences, but is in fact the recipient of even more free money.
Taking this into account and the many hardships and frustrations that George faces in his own life, is George’s life really wonderful? Some questions that might be relevant to this topic: What does George desire out of his life and how much of what he desires has he achieved? Furthermore, has George achieved anything objectively valuable with his life and how should this affect our assessment of his life?
How would each theory score the lives of these two characters? Which theory or theories would rank each character’s life highest and why? (Hint: Mr. Potter represents someone who champions Individualism and is likely to do best under Desire Theory, while George Bailey represents someone who puts the well-being of his community before himself and would score best on many Objective Lists). When applying Hedonism to each character remember the Epicurean (Hedonist) strategy we discussed in the reading: “What’s love Got To Do With It: Epicureanism and Friends With Benefits.”
Between George Bailey and Mr. Potter, who really has the better life and why? What are Mr. Potter’s core values compared to George’s? Mr. Potter thinks people like George Bailey are naïve and foolish; is he correct? Why or why not? Is it better for us (as individuals and/or as a community) to follow Bailey’s example or Potter’s? Why?
A good essay will:
-Consider the positives and negatives of the lives of both characters.
-Go beyond merely applying the three theories of well-being and take-up and defend your own view of George’s and Mr. Potter’s life (this will be your thesis for the assignment). When you play devil’s advocate you should try to challenge your own view in a compelling way.
-Clearly and succinctly state the main argument for the thesis.
-Consider the plausible difficulties involved in scoring Mr. Potter’s life highly under each theory of well-being. (For instance, what does Mr. Potter need to desire and not desire for his life to score highly under desire theory? Are these set of desires realistic for most people to have or even for Mr. Potter to have?)
-Consider the challenge and skepticism many may feel about blending morality and well-being together. George Bailey is definitely morally superior in his actions than Mr. Potter, but should that mean that George’s life is better than Mr. Potter’s? Or is it more accurate to say that morality required George to sacrifice the quality of his life and so he ended up with a life that is either worse than Mr. Potter’s or equally mediocre despite admirably benefiting the community as a whole? Why?/ Why not?
-Correctly identify and defend the argument’s controversial premises using sound reasoning, well-chosen examples, insightful analogies, etc.

Ethics and Film

You are responsible to watch one of the assigned films and provide an analysis and critique of the ethical perspective presented in the movie. You must choose one of the following movies to view for your essay:

Bella (2006),
Jurassic Park (1993),
Rendition (2007),
Food, Inc. (2008),
Million Dollar Baby (2005),
Moon (2010),
Zero Dark Thirty (2012),
The Lorax (2012),
The Business of Being Born (2008). This film has some graphic content (live births, etc).
Blackfish (2013)
Les Misérables (2012)
One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961)
101 Dalmatians (1996)

The structure of your essay must include the following four components:

1.) Explain the ethical dilemma thoroughly.
2.) Explain what approach to the dilemma is presented in the film.
3.) Explain the values at play in the story. For example, is this an example of a Kantian ethic, utilitarianism, etc.?
4.) Explain your own approach, providing support for your argument. Argue both sides of the dilemma before making your own argument. Work through different ethical models presented in the textbook. Conclude your analysis with your evaluation, critique, and opinion of how the dilemma presented in the movie should be handled ethically.

You must cite at least 3 sources besides the film. You can use your textbook as a source.

The paper is to be 2-3 double-spaced pages in length. It cannot be any shorter than 2 pages or any longer than 3 pages. Because this is a short essay, the quality should be of a very high standard. Remember that it is a philosophical essay and must be written with substantive and clear language without any “fluff” or unnecessary words. There are some helps available in the announcements section in Moodle to help you write a philosophical essay.

Discussion Prompt
Examine the following real case and respond to the prompts in your initial post.
In 2003, 18-year-old Devin Moore was arrested and brought to a police station under auto theft suspicion. While in custody, Moore acquired a police officer’s gun and killed that officer by shooting him several times, including a fatal shot to the head. Moore then shot and killed a second police officer with yet another fatal shot to the head. Finally, Moore walked down the hall and shot and killed an emergency dispatcher. After committing the three murders, Moore stole a police cruiser and drove off. In less than one minute, Moore had murdered three people.
His lawyer’s defense was that the video game Grand Theft Auto (GTA) made him do it. It turns out that Moore had been playing GTA day and night for months, and his lawyers argued that Moore was not guilty because of a mental defect arising, in part, from playing GTA for hours upon hours. According to Moore’s lawyer, Jack Thompson:
“What we’re saying is that Devin Moore was, in effect, trained to do what he did. He was given a murder simulator. He bought it as a minor. He played it for hundreds of hours, which is primarily a cop-killing game. It’s our theory, which we think we can prove to a jury in Alabama, that, but for the video-game training, he would not have done what he did.”
Upon Moore’s arrest, he stated, “life is a video game; everybody has to die sometime.” An Alabama jury concluded that Moore was to blame for the murders, not the creators of GTA. Neuroscience tells us that a person’s prefrontal cortex, which is the brain region responsible for important functions such as conscience, emotions, and reasoning to conclude, is not completely developed until a person is in their early to mid-’20s. Moore was 18 when he committed these crimes.
Discussion Questions: Should Moore carry all of the responsibility for his actions, or should GTA creators share some of the responsibility? Explain which ethical system justifies your answer and why. What role do habituated thoughts and activities play in our personal formation and willingness to undertake specific actions?
