Public Service Ethics (Book)
James S. Bowman ; Jonathan P. West
Each response should be a minimum of 200 words and should incorporate concepts introduced in chapter
The question “Can ethics be taught?” is a conceptually confused one. Ethics and values are taught—the urgent questions are “Which ones?” and “How can the lessons be sustained?
Analyze these topics:
*Teddy Roosevelt’s quote near the start of this chapter.
*C. P. Snow’s “two cultures” discussed early in the chapter as illustrated by Newton’s observation that “Gravity explains the motions of planets, but it cannot explain who put the planets in motion.”
*Knowledge is knowing what; perspective is knowing why.
*Ethics as the easiest and hardest topic in management?
Regarding the “London Bridge Attack,” draw on what you learned in the “Constraints” reading and answer the following: Why is Darryn Frost morally permitted (i.e., apart from the law) to threaten Usman Khan with a weapon, but Khan is not morally permitted to a) initially attack other people on the bridge and b) to threaten Frost once Frost points the narwhal tusk at Khan?
Find a local editorial or article online that demonstrates politics affecting nurses. Then, write a 1- to 2-page paper summarizing the editorial or article.
Address the following in the paper, using the editorial or article as a reference:
Provide a summary of the article and how it impacts nursing practice.
Provide two scenarios or examples of why nurses feel they are too busy to worry about politics.
Discuss your perspective on why you think politics may not interest some nurses.
Identify one argument persuading new nurses to become politically active.
Be sure to cite your resource using APA (7th ed.) format.

Briefly reflect on “George’s Dilemma,” Case 2.2, pages 103 and 104, in Ethics Across the Professions. Do you
think George ought to take the job at the chemical and biological weapons lab on moral grounds? Why or why not?
Argue for your position while making connections with a specific ethical theory
Watch the Pinto case and the cost benefit analysis discussed in the first part of this video.
Is it moral to put a price tag on human lives? Why?
How can Utilitarianism help in this Pinto case?
I have some background on airport security, but the introduction needs to include how it interacts with the economy of time and the image of objectivity through an STS (science technology and society) framework .
I will attach what I have. Please include it!

Read, Reflect, Analyze Paper
The Read, Reflect, and Analyze paper is an assignment where you examine and reflect on your thoughts within text. There is a 2-4 page requirement. I am looking for depth and engagement of thought. Also, make sure to prove that you have read your assigned readings by citing required readings within each section of the rubric. APA format should always be followed when structuring your writing in the nursing profession. The following is what I will use to grade your assignment.
Grading will be based on:
Read, Reflect, and Analyze Questions:
1. Questions and Rubric Sections:
a. Discuss the four cardinal virtues in your own life and/or in the lives of persons you know/ love. Identify examples of: prudence, justice, temperance and fortitude. Also provide some reflection upon how persons with these virtues have impacted your choice to become a Nurse. How do the Cardinal virtues apply to your readings? (Worth 25%)
b. What is ethics and how do we as human persons learn about ethics? What is the difference between ethics, morals and laws and how do they fit together? (Worth 25%)
c. Choose one of the philosophical frameworks/values perspectives (within the lecture/supplemental videos) and give an example of how this would be utilized in nursing. How does the ANA/ERD fit into these approaches? (Worth 25%)
d. Depth, engagement, and clarity of reflection and concepts 10%
e. APA/Grammar 15%
I will add the rubric and the required reading. Please use them as sources.
i will add here some videos
If you have any questions or need clarification, please let me know.
Thank you!
James is a fourth-grade classroom teacher whose homework policy is that homework for the week goes home on Friday and is due no later than the following Thursday. He emphasizes that it is the students’ choice to do it or not and it can be submitted early, but if homework is not completed and handed in by Thursday, they will serve detention during one recess period. Chris is an excellent student who always finishes his work on time and correctly. He is a sensitive and dedicated student who strives hard to please. One Wednesday, Chris is sick and out of school; the following day, Thursday, he forgets to bring his homework to class. This is the first time Chris does not have his homework. He could give Chris a day’s extension for being sick, though this is not his normal policy and has not be done for anyone else in the past. James also knows the thought of serving detention is devastating for Chris. James has to decide what to do.
Question 1: List everyone who would be affected by James’ decision. Think carefully and do not limit your focus to just Chris.
Question 2: What options are available to James? Again, think outside the box of yes/no. Explore possible alternatives or even conditions to his decision even if they have not been mentioned here. (There are more than 2 options so be sure you have more than 2 answers here.)
Question 3: What do you think James should do? Why?
Question 4: Would your answer change if this student was in twelfth grade rather than fourth grade? Why or why not?
Question 5: Are there circumstances in which there are exceptions to rules? What are some of these reasons?
Question 6: If an exception is made for the excellent student who was sick, does the same exception apply to all students including the ones who did not have an excuse other than they just did not want to do it? Why or why not?
Question 7: Sometimes, how you present things can make a difference in how others react. If James did not refer to this as “detention” but instead called it something such as homework make up time, how would this change things?
Relativism and Uncertainty
Can it really be true that there’s no certainty to be found in any ethical claims? If so, why does it seem so easy to find counter-examples? Child abuse? Torture? Betrayal? – or are you uncertain about those?
A note from the professor:
Each week the professor will offer some questions to initiate the discussion. Feel free– to reply, and to critique other contributions. A careful analytical exchange allows understanding to grow.
The professor has posted questions about the readings as a way of starting discussion. Probably you should think of those as a start point rather than an end point.
Important Reminder: !!
The Discussions are designed to encourage engagement and debate. To strengthen student understanding and analysis of the course materials. As with the writing assignments, all the activity is between you and the various texts and other materials, but with the added wrinkle that you’re primarily engaging. For reasons both social and technical, please do not introduce any external voices, and especially any introduced as somehow authoritative.
The Discussions offer the opportunity to introduce your tentative analysis and theoretical reflection. Discussions arent a place for googling what other people might say about an issue being posed, nor for any pose of your lecturing the rest of the class. No one is in a position to settle issues that are inevitably subtle and complex. Conclusions are not really at issue: the intellectual process certainly is.
