Instructions:
A “notes & queries” is an assignment that allows you to make connections between anthropological concepts found across different chapters of our textbook. You will be choosing two ideas from each and every chapter assigned for a specific notes and queries and relate one idea to another one found in different chapters. For our “Notes & Queries #1,” relate ideas that you have found in Chapter 1, 2, and 3. This means you will be covering six (6) ideas in total out of these three chapters; two ideas from each of the three chapters. Additionally, you will also relate Herd (2005) and Boas’ (1889) work to any of the synthesis you have created in this assignment. When discussing any concepts found in our textbook or journal articles, please provide some anthropological contexts for each and every idea you are discussing. Please kindly bold all citations in your writing-this format will greatly help your instructor grade your work (thank you!).
For example, you will connect one idea from Chapter 1 to an idea from Chapter 2, another idea from Chapter 1 to an idea from Chapter 3, and then connect yet another idea from Chapter 1 to another idea from Chapter 3. Your writing does not necessarily have to follow the order of these three connections that I mentioned above. You can start with an idea you are comfortable with as long as you connect it to another idea from a different chapter.
Let’s say you found the idea of “addition” in math in Chapter 1 related to the idea of “ethnicity” found in Chapter 2 (this is a hypothetical example), your synthesis (a.k.a. connection between these two ideas) could be something like “Sometimes ethnicity, one’s heritage, language, shared history, and other aspects of cultural traditions, (Chapter 2, page 29) in a society works like addition, combining two or multiple entities together, (Chapter 1, Page 6) in mathematics-one can add two ethnic identities together such as the case in Taiwanese + American = Taiwanese American. Whereas 1 + 1 = 2 is meaningful in math, in ethnicity, 1 identity + 1 identity = 1 new identity in my perspective.” The writing above demonstrates that you have understood and explained both the concepts from Chapter 1 and chapter 2 and you have create a synthesis (e.g., a combination) of both ideas that is uniquely your own. Be sure to provide specific information when citing and discussing any ideas from our required sources (both textbook and journal articles).
The assignment is a mini essay (not a re-type of your class notes) so you will need to cite both textbook page number (please indicate both chapter number and page number(s) in your in-text citation when discussing each and every textbook concept of your choice. When citing any journal articles, please be sure to include author’s last name, year of publication, and specific page numbers. For instance, (Yang 2024, page 5) would satisfy this citation requirement. Each textbook/journal article citation is half a point (0.5) of your grade and all decimal places will be DROPPED when I enter your grade in Canvas. Please also ask at least one question (hence the “queries” part of the assignment) that is related to your discussion.
Format: Your “notes and queries” should follow the general format of typed, double-spaced, font size 12, Times New Roman and 1-inch margins all around (Top, Bottom, Right, and Left). A work cited or reference cited page is NOT required for this assignment. You do not need to include any person information (as files are uploaded under your own name), but if you choose to do so, please have your name and all relevant information listed in one single line on top of the page. For instance, the following is one example how you can include all relevant information in one single line (you are free to add or take out any information):

Your work should be one-page long. Penalty (up to 10% of your grade; decimal places are dropped when your grade is entered in Canvas) may apply when suggested formats are not followed.

Studies suggest that decision-makers are often looking at the world through a lens of misconceptions about themselves and about how the world works leading to unethical decisions. What are the ethical implications of this on the decision-making process of public safety professionals?
For example, assuming the research is correct, what factors may make it more or less likely that public safety professionals will have these misconceptions that can lead to unethical decision-making? Given the often high stakes involved in decisions made by public safety professionals, is it more concerning that they might be making them based on misconceptions? Is there something that can/should be done that would lead to fewer of these misconceptions by public safety professionals?
You should have reviewed the information in the discussion section about how to achieve the maximum points on discussion posts and responses.

In an essay of approximately 3-4 pages (1 inch margins, 12pt font, double spaced

In an essay of approximately 3-4 pages (1 inch margins, 12pt font, double spaced), address the following prompt:
Company A has hiring policies in place that grant certain preferences to qualified female candidates for positions related to software development; specifically, among the pool of qualified candidates, the hiring managers at A are given the flexibility to “consider gender” as one of many factors in deciding which candidate to hire and have been encouraged to use gender as an “important consideration” in hiring. The company has a two-fold rationale for these preferential practices. First, relative to the population of qualified candidates, females have been historically underrepresented in software positions. The preferential policies are a way to correct for that disadvantage. Second, in an increasingly diverse, global business environment, there is a need to have females as software developers. Improving the representation of female employees in this role is an important way to remain competitive while remaining loyal to A’s commitment of creating an “inclusive” workplace.
Do you think A’s preferential treatment of women is ethically defensible? Why or why not? What ethical principles or values are relevant in justifying your position? Explain and defend your answer by selectively integrating the assigned course material from Session 6(Class 05 slides pptx file) as well as any material from prior sessions. Feel free to explain what parts of A’s policy are acceptable and what parts are not by drawing contrasts, comparisons and distinctions relevant to your analysis. Your response should be clearly and precisely written and well-organized.
