At length, and in a charitable manner, present the argument or perspective advanced in this paper. Then, present a thoughtful objection (if it’s one we haven’t discussed in class, run it by me first). You may, if appropriate, engage with a second reading in raising your objection (e.g., you might find it useful to cite Tom Regan in raising an objection to Singer). Finally, consider what the author might say in response to the objection, and explain whether you think this response is satisfactory.
Your paper should, of course, include introductory and concluding paragraphs; the introduction should end with a nice, clear thesis statement that informs the reader of your purpose/aim. Make sure that your paper is well-edited and clearly written before submission.
TIPS:
Below are some general guidelines to bear in mind as you begin working on your term papers.
(1) If you hope to make an A, both the content and prose need to be impeccable. So, leave plenty of time for proofreading and editing. Reading a draft aloud, or to a friend, is a great way to catch errors and clunky, awkward wording. Also note that, all else being equal, longer papers tend to do better than shorter ones.
(2) You must include the required in-text citations. Every time you quote or paraphrase, you need to give me the relevant page number.
(3) You should not consult an outside source (unless we’ve talked, and you’ve cleared it with me). The point of the paper is to give you a chance to really engaged with one of the course readings in depth.
(4) Your thesis statement should take the form “In this paper, I will X, Y, and Z.” And very specific. Don’t just tell me “I’ll raise an objection to the ontological argument”; tell me which objection you will raise.
(5) You need an introduction and a conclusion. A paper should not start or end abruptly. But these paragraphs should be succinct – no more than half a page.
(6) Avoid the temptation to use flowery prose or unnecessary technical terms.
(7) Avoid cliche introductions (e.g., “From the beginning of time…”).
(8) Be fair and charitable. You be discussing a position, or an objection to a position, about which you have strong feelings. Don’t allow those feelings to cause you to present ideas in a tendentious fashion.
(9) Avoid loaded terms and rhetorical flourishes.
(10) Don’t waste time on elaborate cover pages or headings. All you really need is a title.
(11) No need to cite me.
(12) Avoid super long paragraphs. If a paragraph is more than 3/4 of a page in length, you should probably break it up. If it extends beyond a single page, you definitely should break it up.
(13) Do not pose as an expert on the topic: you are not one.
(14) Do not attempt to do more than the prompt instructs: the goal of your paper is modest; you should not conceive of yourself as saying the final or definitive word about anything.

Sources provide evidence that can support our claims and make people more likely to be convinced – or at least consider what we are trying to argue for.
Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, they are required to avoid plagiarism.
