Critical thinking is essential for scientists and non-scientists alike. Start to think about what critical thinking means to you. How do you define critical thinking? How often do you do it? Do you think it is important?
With your ideas to these questions in mind, go on to read the article Gawande, A. 2016. The Mistrust of Science. The New Yorker [online]
Then post your opinion/view point about the role/importance of critical thinking and the current mistrust of science.
Then respond to two other students in a substantive way. You must scroll all the way to the bottom in order to see the reply button. Need some help on how to submit? Check out this resource for submitting to Canvas Discussions? Once you submit your first post, you will see the posts of fellow students.
Your initial/first post must be a minimum of 150 words and adequately address the above prompt (5 points)
.When you complete this activity, you will have strengthened your ability to: Critically evaluate scientific information
Use library and internet facilities to explore topics in biology
Use basic communication and critical thinking skills in the study of biology

Instructions
Please answer the following:
According to the “The Evolving Terrorist Threat:” article by Joshua Sinai, several examples of the types of warfare terrorists generally employ to achieve their objectives were listed. What were they and how does each empower the terrorist?
According to Gerstein, general agreement now exists that terrorists are “rational” actors. Their actions may not be understood by their victims or the governments and law enforcement agencies that attempt to deal with these threats, but they are far from random irrational acts. Chose a side of this argument and support it with a minimum of three different references.
This is a 2 part question 1) Fully explain the CBRN agent threat posed by the group in the video “Rajneeshpuram: An Experiment to Provoke God” (the video can be found in the Week 4 Lesson); 2) and expound on if the key CBRN agent(s) threat they used in their actions is or is not a threat to our homeland today. Base your answer to the second part of the question upon additional research you conduct from the Internet or other reliable sources.
Fully explain the threat posed by 4th Generation (Novichuk) Chemical Weapons. How have they been used by the Russian government and what makes them different from previous types of chemical weapons. Your answers should be based upon class readings and additional research you conduct from the Internet or other reliable academic sources.
There are many questions surrounding the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is agreed upon by most that the origins are from Wuhan, China. Based upon your readings and other scholarly works (sorry no conspiracy theories), is it possible that the COVID-19 outbreak was a purposeful act? Would it be possible for a terrorist group to recreate the damage caused by this pandemic using a Biological Weapon?
Technical Requirements
Your paper must be at a minimum of 5 pages (the Title and Reference pages do not count towards the minimum limit). Each answer must be a minimum of one full page.
Scholarly and credible references should be used. A good rule of thumb is at least 2 scholarly sources per page of content.
Type in Times New Roman, 12 point and double space.
Students will follow the current APA Style as the sole citation and reference style used in written work submitted as part of coursework.
Points will be deducted for the use of Wikipedia or encyclopedic type sources. It is highly advised to utilize books, peer-reviewed journals, articles, archived documents, etc.
All submissions will be graded using the assignment rubric.

In order to help you apply the general concepts we are covering in class in to something more tangible, you are required to complete one “out-of-class” experience. This experience, and your written summary of this experience, can be submitted through Canvas.
Refer to the remainder of this document for details, but in summary, what you need to do is:
Complete an “out-of-class experience”
Write a reflective/analytic paper based on your experience
Upload your final paper to Canvas (here) by the due date: December 11
Step 1: Complete an “out -of-class experience”
You have a few options for engaging in an out-of-class experience, but remember that your experience must be clearly related to a topic or topics covered in Env 1. Choose one of the following suggested out-of- class experiences:
Attend a field trip: refer to the links of Canvas for suggestions of museums, “wild places” to visit in Orange County (OC Parks, nature centers, botanical gardens, etc), and other appropriate If you choose this option, you will have to submit proof of your attendance (i.e. a picture next to a park sign, a scanned ticket stub from a zoo or botanical garden, etc) and provide a detailed summary of the locale. You should plan on spending 3-4 hours at your chosen site. Monthly bird/nature walks are scheduled on the IVC campus…check announcements for details.
Volunteer with a local environmental organization: this option requires that you spend a minimum of 3-4 hours volunteering with a local environmental organization and documenting your See Canvas for a list of suggested organizations.
Outside film/lecture/discussion: community or campus events sometimes provide opportunities to learn about biological Attendance at such an event may be used as an out-of-class experience. This should be an organized film viewing, lecture or discussion. Suggestions are posted on Canvas.
Step 2: Write a reflective/analytic paper on your experience
You will write and submit a reflective/analytic paper on your out-of-class experience, which will include:
a brief description of the experience, including the name of the organization and the person who directed the experience if it was a service project or lecture/discussion;
insightful discussion of how the course theme can be used to analyze and understand issues related to the experience, and/or how the experience deepens your understanding of the course theme (this should be the most involved section of your paper);I will repeat for emphasis – make sure that you relate your experience to specific course themes or topics!
your conclusion on the experience as a whole.
This paper should be no less than 800 and no more than 1300 words. Suggested format: double‐ spaced, 1” margins, 12 pt Times New Roman.
Step 3: Submit your paper
You will need to submit your paper on Canvas:
Upload your paper using the link provided on Canvas by the due date (December 11)
Papers will be scanned for plagiarism and for the use of ChatGPT or other AI tools. Refer to the syllabus for policies on academic dishonesty. Be sure to submit an original paper written for this class.

“Hi, I have a few questions about your paper. It came up as 100% AI generated. Did you use Chat GPT to write some or all of this paper? I also can’t find any evidence of this event on 10/11/23 in Santa Barbara. Do you have a ticket or a link to information about the event? If I don’t hear back from you by tomorrow (12/21) you will not receive credit for this paper.”

At the very beginning of the semester, I shared the following goals for this course:
By the conclusion of this course, I hope that you….
…have a better understanding of your environment and the myriad ways that it affects your daily lives.
…understand how to access and process information on your environment and the decisions that are being made about it.
…become a sophisticated consumer of environmental information.
…consider focusing on the environment as a central component of your professional or personal life, no matter what profession you choose.
Which of these has changed for you over the course of the semester? Please choose one of these goals to discuss and include a specific example from the course that has influenced you and/or will influence choices or decisions in your future.
Although I encourage interaction, you are only required to post once for full credit.

Instructions
Choose a film that contains a weather phenomenon. (You can get many of these movies for FREE from public library systems, and some are also available on Netflix or Amazon Prime)
Watch the movie!
Choose a weather phenomenon to research (if there is more than one in the film).
Use books, news articles, textbooks, and scholarly articles to learn more about the science behind this phenomenon (minimum of three references). Please DO NOT cite Wikipedia pages, though they may be a good start to steer you toward more appropriate references.
Write a 500-700 (or more) word analysis addressing:How was this film related to weather? How was weather used to move the story forward?
What is the science behind the phenomenon you chose to research?
How well or poorly did the film depict the reality of this phenomenon?
At the end of the paper make sure you include your references (minimum of three) cited in a consistent style.
Example
Here is an example of a blog analyzing the scientific accuracy of “Gravity”.
Possible Films for your Reference
Into the Storm; 2014; Directed by Steven Quale
The Day After Tomorrow; 2004; Directed by Roland Emmerich

Weather Journal
***Just make these predictions up in your head and then take the actual real predictions from one week in Mt. Pleasant in the last month.******** compare your prediction to the observed weather and evaluate your forecast.
***You’ll fill out the attached excel spreadsheet included for your weather data. In a separate document, record any additional observations, your forecast, and your evaluation of the forecast for each day. An example of such an entry might look something like this: *** Make sure to fill it out on the spreadsheet use the formatting she gives you***
“Day 1 – 3/14/15
Additional observations: Winds were calm in the morning, but increased as the day went on, shifting direction from south winds around noon to northwest winds around dinner. Temperature dropped from 58 degrees to 40 degrees through the afternoon.
Forecast: Based on the fact that temperature dropped quite a lot over the course of the afternoon today, I would expect the temperatures to be colder tomorrow. The shifting direction of winds would also suggest the passage of a front, so there may be a chance of precipitation overnight.
Forecast high: 42 F
Forecast low: 30 F
Forecast Precipitation: light snow overnight, with little to no accumulation, melting by mid-afternoon
Forecast Evaluation:
High temperature was only 38F rather than the 42F I predicted. It stayed cloudy all day so not much heating from the sun
Low temperature was 30F! I predicted it exactly!
Precipitation: No snow occurred – I guess there wasn’t enough moisture to generate precipitationI would recommend completing the weather journal assignment towards the second half of the course so that you have some more tools available to you.
Data observations can be collected however you see fit, but I would encourage you to take a few moments to go out and experience the weather each day (safely though!)
Web sources that you may find helpful include:
The National Weather Service
The University of Utah Mesowest website
Mt. Pleasant’s data
Grading of this assignment will be based on detail and completeness, not accuracy, so don’t worry if you get a few forecasts wrong! Even the pros get things wrong. Remember you’re predicting the future, and that’s hard to do!
Other Assignment
Homework 9: The homework should be straightforward. Please answer everything on the given worksheets.
