There are many types of criticisms students might choose to use when analyzing a work of literature. We tend to live in a patriarchal society, thus our viewpoints are often skewed. Intentionally using a different criticism when analyzing a piece of literature can completely change the direction a student may think.
Students will read the different types of criticism and select three different criticisms to complete the activity. (students cannot use Reader Response)
Students will write a paragraph of at least eight sentences explaining how a particular criticism is reflected in a work.
Students may use one work to apply all three criticisms or a different work for each criticism.
First sentence of paragraph should contain work being discussed, along with type of criticism.
Make sure to use present tense when discussing works
Make sure you proof read and correct anything mistakes so it align with assignments goals. This is just a revision.

For your first major assignment, you will examine the historical trajectory of a

For your first major assignment, you will examine the historical trajectory of an idea in business (defined broadly) by examining primary documents and discussing their relevance today. While you are welcome to write about any topic you choose, you must ground your essay in analyzing at least one PRIMARY text–this might be a CEO or entrepeneur’s writings or speeches, an early article or publication about a topic, or other field notes that are of interest to you. In addition to briefly describing the cultural and historical context of your topic (e.g., how did this impact ____ field?) you will also discuss its relevance today. For example, in the introduction post you have already completed, I asked you to contrast discussions of American business by president Calvin Coolidge and political activist Eugene Debs. While you should choose new texts for this assignment, the questions you worked through on the assignment, and a discussion of their relevance today, are what I’d like you to consider for whatever text or texts you choose for your essay. By contrasting a primary document with current debates or discussions, you will also show your ability to translate business affairs for a broad and more general audience, which will become one of the major goals of our course.
Historical Perspectives papers should be around 1000 words, double-spaced, 12-point font, formatted in APA.
Grade:
A-range papers will discuss a primary document with a strong awareness of scientific and cultural context. These papers will discuss a relevant topic and provide thorough analysis of the primary text. Papers show a thorough understanding of current and ongoing debates surrounding their chosen topic and provide a sophisticated comparison and discussion of the issues at hand. The paper’s audience is consistently clear, and the writer effectively addresses either experts or the general public with a degree of consistency throughout.

Magical elements aside, is Boccaccio’s story believable, or is it too far-fetche

Magical elements aside, is Boccaccio’s story believable, or is it too far-fetched to be believed? Perhaps the relationship between magic and reality creates a wall between reality and credibility? Discuss whether the “real stuff” mentioned in the stories (the Crusades, a man’s role, a woman’s role, societal expectations, or perhaps magic vs reality/spirituality) helps make the stories (or a specific story/narrator/character – pick one) believable? Make sure you use an example for support.

The reading for this week’s module is some of my favorite.  The Decameron is quite entertaining. I had a student inquire about my prompt for the reading response, so I thought I would include some additional instruction/clarification here:
What I really want to know is your opinion on Boccaccio’s use of magic within his stories. Does he lose credibility by including magical/supernatural elements? Are his didactic moments lost because he includes magic here and there?
I hope you enjoyed the reading.
– 250 words maximum. I’m not a word counter, but try to stay close to this count while answering the prompt.
– NO QUOTING from any other source.
– Limited quoting from the literature. Keep literature quotes to less than three lines and cite quotations. (A line of poetry is a line of text.) Check the Course Materials section for a refresher on HOW to quote poetry.
– MLA format in a Word document.

Assignment Content
This assignment requires more than a simple sentence stating what you are writing for your research paper. Ensure to write a brief description of your planned topic for your research paper about your novel.
The novel for this course is Oscar Wilde’s A Picture of Dorian Gray.
As you are reading your novel, think about questions like this:
Does the novel contain a great deal of symbolism? Perhaps you could write a paper that deals with the author’s use of symbolism in the novel.
How does realism play into the meaning of the novel?
How does a change in setting affect the development of the plot?
You may choose to address standard fiction elements such as theme, characterization, symbolism, allegory, irony, realism, or settings. History papers and biographical papers are not acceptable for this assignment.
A proposal example is attached.
Have to be willing to do three more assignments and a 10 page essay for this assignment

3) Below the main idea, tone(s), and theme(s), create a short creative piece that explores one idea or element from the readings that prompts you to think about your relationship to your changing environment. This can be poetry (at least 12 lines), memoir, flash fiction, or hybrid narrative (such as a prose poem or graphic narrative). If you choose a graphic narrative, like a comic, you may submit this in a separate document.

Second Draft Due: Saturday 7/13 @ 11:59PM (50 points)
Final Draft Due: Friday 7/19 @ 11:59PM (240 points)
Reminder: Essay #3 is not eligible for revision because it is due too late in our course to allow time for that. That is why you will submit a first draft and get feedback on it this time. Each of the above dates includes a 24 hour grace period.
PURPOSE:
Essay #3, which is worth a total of 315 points, is a formal argument and addresses Student Learning Outcome #1, “In conversation with multiple texts, whether assigned by instructors or chosen by the student, students will write a formal argument.” Therefore, you will use multiple texts from Reading Assignment #2 and a Red Handed podcast episode you will be listening to in Week Four (as well as any research you choose to do) to support a formal argument. Please respond to the following prompt:
We read some pieces on different types of cannibalism, including consensual cannibalism. This option asks you to look specifically at Armin Meiwes and Bernd Brandes’ act of consensual cannibalism. Is Meiwes and Brandes’ act of consensual cannibalism morally wrong? Why or why not? This assignment does not ask you to argue whether or not it was morally right (which is going a bit far), just whether or not it was morally wrong. You are not being asked to argue whether or not Meiwes and Brandes’ behavior is repulsive to most; we already know their act is certainly is repulsive to most, and most people would never do it or even want to meet someone who would. This is irrelevant. This option asks you only to argue whether or not the act is morally wrong.
DIRECTIONS:
Your essay should:
be no fewer than 2,200 words
be double-spaced and typed in at least a 12 point font if it is to receive in document feedback
incorporate quotations from at least three sources as evidence or data (although, many students use more than three). These sources should mostly consist of the assigned articles but can also include relevant articles you find yourself. Depending on what you are arguing, it will be necessary to supplement our articles with a bit of outside research. The Red Handed podcast episode 49, “Dinner With a Cannibal: Armin Meiwes” which you will listen to next week is also a valuable source.
include a works cited list and incorporate in-text quotations in proper 9th edition MLA format
be organized mindfully according to the Essay #3 slide shows
incorporate elements of argument: claims, concessions, data, warrants, counterclaims, and rebuttals, as well as attention to the opposition’s logical fallacies
contain seven paragraphs. Instructions will be included in slide shows
be edited carefully for grammar, spelling, and typos
include a proper heading and creative title
be written without the use of AI tools

PURPOSE:
In this Discussion Post, you will explore the best arguments BOTH FOR AND AGAINST Meiwes and Brandes’ act of consensual cannibalism being considered morally “wrong.” This is intended to help you figure out how you will respond to Essay #3: The Formal Argument.
I look forward to reading your thoughts on this controversial and unique case. Truthfully, it is a bit easier to argue that the act is not morally wrong, but it’s absolutely possible to do a good job or arguing the opposite as long as you avoid begging the question, faulty emotional appeals, or red herrings. I will provide plenty of guidance in the upcoming modules to help you support your stance whether you plan to argue the act was or was not morally wrong. For now, please follow these directions for this week’s discussion post:
DIRECTIONS:
For this discussion post, you will do two original posts of at least 200 words each.
PLEASE POST THE FOLLOWING:
I’m assuming you have an initial opinion on whether this act was morally wrong or not. Although you are free to change your mind as many times as you wish before the final essay is due, for now, if you have made up your mind, focus your two posts on the best evidence/reasons why you believe Meiwes and Brandes’ act was wrong or not wrong, one reason per post.
If you are still deciding, you can do one post on the best reason you think the act was immoral and the other on the best reason you think it was not immoral.
Avoid begging the question by saying, “It’s wrong because you shouldn’t eat people” or religious reasons like “God would not approve of this” to argue the act was wrong or reasons such as “People should be allowed to do whatever they want” if you are arguing the at was not wrong. These are all logical fallacies and assume too much or simply use the dilemma itself as the answer. You are expected to use logical, clear reasoning and incorporate evidence in the form of one well-chosen quotation from our course readings per post.
Include quotations early in your posts and really use them to make your point.
You should also write two response posts of at least 50 words each to classmates. You do not need to include quotations in your response posts.

Persuasive Recommendation Report
SCENARIO: Your workplace has experienced significant change recently, and your department is expected to respond to change with innovation. Your immediate manager has asked you to determine one specific innovation for your department; you will be responsible for the implementation of this innovation.
You have already presented your manager with an informative report in which you explored two options for how this innovation might be implemented. Now they would like you to create a recommendation report for the department manager.
ASSIGNMENT: In Unit 3, you revised the informative report in which you researched several methods for implementing your chosen innovation and compared and contrasted two of them based on factors that you chose. In this assignment, you will choose one of these methods and write a persuasive composition in which you aim to persuade your audience that this is the best course of action to take in order to implement your innovation.
Sample Touchstone 4
To write a detailed recommendation, you will need to consider 2-3 criteria that are influencing your recommendation. These should be the same criteria that you evaluated objectively in your comparison/contrast assignment; however, you should look at them through a new lens as you are now aiming to persuade your audience that one method is better suited than the others rather than to inform them about the similarities and differences between the methods.
In addition to advocating for the method you have chosen, you should spend at least one body paragraph acknowledging and responding to any counterarguments you anticipate regarding this method. Think about the method you did not choose and why someone might advocate for that method instead. Address those concerns by demonstrating why the method you have chosen is still the best option. Refer to the Unit 4 lesson called Using Counterarguments for further instruction on addressing these types of arguments in a persuasive composition.
In order to foster learning and growth, all work you submit must be newly written specifically for this course. Any plagiarized or recycled work will result in a Plagiarism Detected alert. For guidance on the use of generative AI technology, review Ethical Standards and Appropriate Use of AI.
A. Assignment Guidelines
DIRECTIONS: Write a double-spaced 4-6 page (1000-1500 words) persuasive essay in which you:
Use the information you have learned from your informative comparison/contrast report to write a recommendation in which you advocate for one of the methods of implementation that you investigated for your innovation.
The essay must contain a persuasive thesis statement that clearly states the method you think is best and why (the 2-3 criteria that influenced your recommendation).
For example, if you compared and contrasted various instant messaging tools for creating more rapid communication between teams, you could argue in favor of implementing a particular tool due to the fact that it is less expensive and more user-friendly than the other options.
State your persuasive thesis in an introductory paragraph.
Include 5-7 body paragraphs that explore the criteria that led you to advocate for this particular method of implementation, applying and analyzing researched evidence.
Make sure to explain your reasoning and interpretation of your researched evidence, using the techniques of context, translation, and analysis where appropriate.
Address potential counterarguments using logic and evidence.
Cite and reference 2-4 reliable primary or secondary sources that you used to support your argument for this particular method of implementation.
Make sure to integrate your source material effectively, using the techniques of summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting where appropriate.
End with a concluding paragraph that restates your thesis in different words and provides a concluding thought.
Write in the persuasive mode throughout the composition, using rhetorical appeals.
Minimize mechanical and stylistic errors.
