What Is a Cover Letter? – Purdue OWL® – Purdue University

English 112 English Composition II: Writing and Rhetoric
Bronx Community College of the City University of New York
Essay 5 Assignment Instructions
Length and Format: This essay must be a minimum of one page typed and double spaced in 12
point, Times New Roman font with with standard margins and spacing. Your essay should have a
thoughtful title. Your name, course title, and the date should be at the top of the paper. Your heading
does not count towards the minimum length requirement.
Topic: Students frequently tell me they are attending college to land their dream job. College
composition can help with that. Resume and application letters function as an argument making the
claim that you (the applicant) are qualified and worthy of an interview with a potential employer (the
audience). You need to be able to substantiate your claims and persuade the audience to grant you an
interview. Locate a job posting that interests you and that you would be qualified for upon
graduation. Be sure to research the company and position. If the company or organization has a
website, that is a good place to begin.
Write an application letter to apply for this job. Consider the job posting, your knowledge of the
company, your career interests, your experience, and your qualifications. Develop your letter to be a
direct response to the job posting. For the purposes of this exercise, it is acceptable for you to include
skills or experiences that you plan to have by the time you graduate.
I will grade your business letter based on the evidence your provide to support your claim that you
are qualified and worthy of an interview, how specifically you respond to the advertised job, how
well you emphasize your strengths, your business appropriate tone, and your proper business letter
formatting.
It is my sincere hope that the letter you write for me will one day be the first draft of the letter you
write to land your dream job upon graduation.

Bento Box
o Throughout the family chapter the main character talks several times about home but is confused whether Japan or Indianna is home for her. This leads her to a state of double consciousness.
o It is notable that when she is in America people see her as Japanese but when she is in Japan, she is not totally Japanese because she speaks English.
• The Film
o The women in the film all share a common hardship back in China. The director combines all their individual stories into a collective narrative.
o They suffered under sexism, racism, and other traumatic experiences.
o None of the women were complacent in their suffering and developed plans to escape from these issues.
o The women escaped from old Chinese values that reinforce sexism but still inflict the values onto their children. An example of this is the way the lady forces chess onto her daughter. Another example of this is the lady being a mean mother-in-law.
o The Parable of the Swan (In the handouts on Canvas)
o This Parable is from the book Joy Luck Club and is in the first scene of the film.
o Hope is one of the key words in the parable and the movie.
o “Over there she will be too full to swallow any sorrow.”
o Them parable implies that in China a woman’s only purpose is to feed her husband. It says that in America things will not be like that if they are able to immigrate there.
o Four Mothers and four daughters. The film is splitinto four sections that show the story of each pair of mothers and daughters.
o There are 4 parables that correlate with each set of women.
o The game Chinese checkers is important in the film. Each player takes one of four sides. The number four is shown throughout the movie.
o The narrative structure is like the game. Each woman takes turn telling their story like how they take turns making their move in the game.
o The swan was bought in China then stretched its neck out to go to America.
o The same song that plays at the beginning of the movie plays at the end when June goes to China to tell her two sisters that their mom died. It is important to understand why the same song plays at the beginning and end.
o The daughters throughout the film do not understand their mothers’ good intentions and confuse them with hatred.
o When you hear the music from the first and last scene it represents June’s mother’s hope.
o The neckless that June wears to China also represents hope. The material of the neckless is jade which represents good luck and joy in China.

Directions ►For this Discussion Post you will start the research process for your final essay. First, you should use the lecture and the skills that you honed from last class to try to find three sources that will support your argument. With these skills, you must find at least 2 academic sources to support your Proposal/Essay’s overall. An academic source can be found by using our library databases and only looking for “Scholarly” or “Peer Reviewed” sources. (SEE PPT/Lecture) You will then write a small paragraph underneath each source, where you summarize each source, evaluate the author’s claims, and discuss how you will use these sources for your argument. (Summarize, Assess, and Reflect!). Summarize: Some annotations merely summarize the source. What are the main arguments? What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered? If someone asked what this article/book is about, what would you say? The length of your annotations will determine how detailed your summary is. Assess: After summarizing a source, it may be helpful to evaluate it. Is it a useful source? How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is the information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source? Reflect: Once you’ve summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your research. Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your argument? How can you use this source in your research project? Has it changed how you think about your topic? Your should have 3 Annotations in you Annotated Bibliography. 2 of your sources MUST be scholarly, while the third source can be anything: YouTube, X, Newspapers, etc. Your citations should be in alphatical order and you should have the paragraph underneath each directly discssing the source. Avoid quotations and use this exercise as an opportunity to refine your ability to summarize and discuss how you will use these articles as your sources. Directions Here, you will find the PowerPoint on How to Write a Research Paper and a Video walking you through how to use your research to back-up your argument The PowerPoint is is a .ppt file. You should taking notes on the digital copy on your computer, or taking notes on the story on a separate piece of paper. Additionally, there is a Video that goes through Writing About Research in more detail. While going over the PowerPoint , keep these questions/ideas in mind: Do you have a specific stance on one of the essay topics allowed for the research paper? Do you have a strong thesis statement? Do you have strong topic sentences that reflect aspects of your overall argument? What is a a legitimate source for this essay? How can I use my previous research to support my argument? Did I include the required two peer-reviewed sources? Did I make sure my sources were legitimate? What are some ways I can narrow down my research topic while I am doing research? What are some good keywords to research my topic? How can I use the evidence to prove a point, rather than to replace my ideas? Essay 3-Prompt As a reminder, your essay topic is of your choosing. You find an argument, take a side, and defend your side. You must use 2 scholarly sources and one additional source of your choosing to support your argument. Thesis Hints: Topic + Opinion+ Reasons WHY Choose an article/topic + Opinion on that topic + Why You Think this is true (Online education is an effective mode of education that should be given more resources by the College because it widens accessibility, it allows students to take the course at their own pace, and it will save the college and student money.) Revision and editing

Review the following notes before completing this activity:
Revision and editing is often divided into three larger categories:
1. Global – The overall view of your essay. This level focuses on the entire essay to make sure you are addressing the needs of the assignment and are presenting it in a clear and organized way.
2. Local – The paragraph view of your essay. This level focuses on individual paragraphs to make sure they present the content within them clearly and effectively. Make sure your intro., body paragraphs, and conclusion are fulfilling their purposes.
3. Surface (editing) – The sentence view of your essay. This level focuses on individual sentences to make sure grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc. are clear and accurate.
The levels may overlap, meaning sentences can affect paragraphs and paragraphs can affect the whole essay, but it helps to look at each level individually because it can help prioritize important things. The global level issues normally matter the most because your grammar, topic sentences, etc. may be perfect, but if they are not answering the requirements of the assignment, it doesn’t matter. Because of this, it’s best to start with the global level and work your way down.
Instructions:
1. Read through my notes on your rough draft provided through email.
2. Summarize my notes in three to four sentences.
3. Provide a list in which you explain what you need to do on the global, local, and surface levels of your essay based on the explanations of these concepts above (be specific and thorough with this part).
4. Provide a list of things you will revise and edit in your essay, and make this list in the order you will address the issues (you can be less thorough with this list, but make sure to put the most important revisions first).
5. In five to six sentences, explain why you chose this order to work on things (for example, if you note you will work on organization of two paragraphs before clarifying your thesis statement, explain why you decided this).
