Possible Writing Prompts
Select one of the following prompts as the basis of your essay. You can combine ideas if you like.
Gatto argues that public schools essentially disable students leading to a diminished adulthood, Do you agree or disagree?
Gatto’s article does not discuss school funding or the unequal access to quality public education between rich and poor.  Is the low quality schooling that Gatto discusses a class issue that impacts working class schools?
Gatto argues that mass public schooling makes adults immature in various ways. Is schooling the only or main reason that this may be true? Are there other social forces at play here?
Instructions: You can use the outline/guide below to help you organize the paper. Each section provides ideas for what you can write.
I. INTRODUCTION
*Attention Getter is IMPORTANT (anecdote from your life, shocking statistic, meaningful quotation, rhetorical question)
*Next, explain the current situation (occasion). What is the world like “as is” in relation to your issue? Why is it important?
*Mention misconceptions people have related to your topic, if any.
II.  Background
*Next you need to provide background information
* What is the history of the problem?
*What are the details to your problem? What are the various perspectives on how to solve the problem?
*Why is it a unique and complicated issue? Why do people disagree? (audience)
*Include examples to illustrate the struggle or issue.
*You can provide official statistics on the problem, current laws related to the topic, or the position the majority has. This information should be coming from your research.
* CLEARLY establish your thesis.
*Explain the WHY of your thesis in a simple way (i.e. it will solve ____ issue).
III. REFUTATION & CONCESSION
*Now you need to consider the other side of the issue or the opposing argument.
Respectfully summarize opposing perspectives. Clearly explain that this is the opposing side’s perspective (Many argue, the opposition would claim, those who disagree, etc.)
IV. ARGUMENTS/ YOUR SIDE OF THE ISSUE
*Introduce the first perspective you are willing to look at. Explain how your solution will help the situation.
*Explore one main side of the issue.
*Provide evidence for any mini claim you make.
* Facts: data that have been objectively proven and are generally accepted (such as historical facts, scientific data, statistics etc.) Examples: should be sufficient number of examples to prove the case.
*Opinions of experts
Repeat Step IV as many times as necessary. Keep in mind the length requirements of the essay.
VI. CONCLUSION
*Here is where you review the main points.
*Restate your thesis.
*Call to action. If you haven’t introduced any sort of solution in your essay, perhaps encourage others to become more aware of your topic.
* Discuss the implications for the future. What might happen if things continue the way they are going? Is this good or bad? Try to be impactful without being overly dramatic.
*Discuss other related topics that warrant further research and discussion.
*Make a historical parallel regarding a similar issue that can help to strengthen your argument.
*Urge a continued conversation of the topic for the future.

1. Watch & Annotate an Informational Video
Since we’re presenting on narrative this week, let’s watch a few presentations concerning narratives, how they are received, and how they can or should be changed. Choose one of the videos below based on what interests you. Be sure to take a look at their descriptive pages in order to get a sense of who is presenting and how the video is dealing with a certain kind of narrative.
How I’m using biological data to tell better stories — https://www.ted.com/talks/heidi_boisvert_how_i_m_using_biological_data_to_tell_better_stories_and_spark_social_change
How gratitude rewires your brain:  https://www.ted.com/talks/christina_costa_how_gratitude_rewires_your_brain
How your personal narrative limits your future:  https://www.ted.com/talks/andrew_peek_how_your_personal_narrative_limits_your_future
Human nature and the blank slate:  https://www.ted.com/talks/steven_pinker_human_nature_and_the_blank_slate
As you watch, make annotations to help you answer these questions:
who is the speaker/scientist/researcher and what other kinds of resarch/work do they do? (if they are a writer or researcher, see if you can find their work)
what are the most important ideas they share in the video?
what is one “quotable” from the video that you think is worth sharing with your classmates, and why?  (stop the video and get the quote—for some you can find the transcript)
what is your final takeaway from viewing this video–what will you remember about it?
could you use this video as a starting point for an article or essay of your own?
if not as the basis for your own article, could you use it as some type of support for an idea you have about narrative? if so, how?
You do not have to turn in your annotations–they are for you, to make it easy to write the paragraphs in #2
2. Write 2-3 Paragraphs in Response to the Video
When you’re done watching and annotating, write 2-3 paragraphs to respond to the video (250 word minimum).
You’ll have to give your discussion entry a title–in your title, please include the title of the video you chose to write about. This will help your classmates know who to respond to.
In your response, answer the questions from above, but in paragraph style.
Paragraphs should be coherent, which means each sentence should be focused on developing the same basic idea (usually expressed in a “topic sentence”).
Write with as much detail from the video as you can fit into your sentences while still maintaining readability. Don’t write in generalities (scientific writing, including scicomm writing, is specific and precise).
PLEASE do not use ChatGPT or any AI to write or revise any part of these paragraphs. You’re in a writing class to practice writing, so I would very much appreciate it if you write your own paragraphs.
3. Strengths of the Presenter
What do you regard as particular strong about the presenter’s style? How do they structure their delivery or the presentation itself in order to create curiosity and interest and to deliver the presentation’s strongest idea?
Add another 100 words, minimum that describes something about the presentation that you can work into your own slides or presentational style.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Watch and annotate the video of your choice from the list above (Thursday)
Write 2-3 paragraphs of response (250 words minimum) (Thursday)
The paragraphs must answer the questions from the bulleted list in #1

Consider the impact reality television has had on society since its debut. For i

Consider the impact reality television has had on society since its debut. For instance, what effect has reality television had on stereotypes, expectations of beauty, or competition? Using reputable sources and evidence to support your claims, research an effect that reality television has on society and explain the significance of its impact…..As part of your research, you may refer to the course material for supporting evidence, but you must also use at least four credible, outside sources per proposal and cite them using MLA format as well. Please include a mix of both primary and secondary sources, with at least one source from a scholarly peer-reviewed journal. Please also cite them in MLA (including the lesson title and instructor’s name).
Primary sources are first-hand accounts such as interviews, advertisements, speeches, statements, and press releases.
Secondary sources come from peer-reviewed scholarly journals, such as the Journal of Management. You may use sources like JSTOR, Google Scholar, and Social Science Research Network to find articles from these journals. Secondary sources may also come from reputable websites with .gov, .edu, or .org in the domain. (Wikipedia is not a reputable source, though the sources listed in Wikipedia articles may be acceptable.)

Write an expository analysis of 1000-1100 words in response to ONE of the follow

Write an expository analysis of 1000-1100 words in response to ONE of the following prompts:
1. Much of the history of America has involved the assimilation of people from a wide variety of cultures into the American melting pot. In Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, however, such assimilation is seen as degrading. Do you agree? What is more important for the success of America as a nation, developing a sense of a unified culture or maintaining cultural distinctions and identities from one’s heritage? Why? Be sure to incorporate textual/source evidence to support your claim.
2. To what extent does the character of Beneatha in Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun foreshadow the rise of feminism in America? What characteristics does Beneatha display that later would be viewed approvingly by feminists? Are these characteristics approved by the playwright? Why or why not? Support your arguments with specifics from the play.
3. Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun presents racism, not only in the form of overt prejudice through the character of Karl Lindner, but also as a subtle underlying presence that colors all of black experience. Discuss the ways in which this more subtle form of racism is presented in the play. How does it affect the lives of the members of the Younger family? To what extent has this situation changed in the last several decades, and to what extent does it remain the same?
Like the first essay, this one will be organized around a non-obvious thesis; this thesis will be most effective if it states your overall argument about how your chosen theme is treated in “A Raisin in the Sun”. Most theses for this assignment will probably either have an argumentative and expository structure: Either way, your thesis, should be near the beginning of your essay, at the conclusion of a contextualizing introductory paragraph,  summing up your entire claim.
The remainder of your paper will consist of paragraphs, each organized around a distinct sub-topic of your argument, which substantiates your claims through the use of clearly introduced and explicated textual evidence, either direct quotations from the texts or citations of specific events from them. As for the essay’s structure, there are at least two possible ways of proceeding. You could arrange your argument by topic: each paragraph will analyze your chosen topic on the grounds of their relevance to the subtopics of your thesis. Your essay should conclude with a paragraph that sums up your argument and suggests areas of further inquiry.
Grading criteria: an interesting and persuasive thesis, a clear and orderly structure, good use of textual evidence, and a general understanding of the texts you cite. Be sure to proofread carefully for spelling and grammar—such errors may overwhelm your ability to communicate with the reader—and also revise for clarity and eloquence.
Format: This essay should be at least 1000 words and no more than 1100 words. Use a standard font, double-spaced, with one-inch margins. Provide a heading with your name, date and the assignment, and include a descriptive, arresting title (e.g., “Structural Racism in A Raisin in The Sun ”) centered one line above the essay’s first line. This assignment does require a Works Cited page, and in-text parenthetical citations should follow MLA guidelines

This final project will require you to read a primary and secondary

Instructions
This final project will require you to read a primary and secondary source, analyze both, evaluate both, and bring it together to act as support for your writing. All options require strong critical engagement with both the focal primary text(s) and with the required source(s).
General Requirements for the Project:
All submissions must:
use the assigned secondary source(s) in addition to whatever primary texts they discuss (and these sources must be used, actually cited, in the essay, not just listed in the works cited at the end)
be 1000-1200 words long.
must be original to this class and assignment (no submissions from other courses and or previous forums are allowed).
be in MLA format and use MLA style citations (see The APUS Library MLA Guide for MLA formatting models; most of you sources will probably need to use the “Journal Articles” model).
In addition to the chosen play and assigned corresponding secondary source, you may use additional peer-reviewed sources to back up your persuasive thesis. BE CAREFUL that you do not create a cut and paste essay of information from your various sources; your ideas are to be the focus of the essay, and the research should supplement and support your ideas. Also, take great care not to plagiarize; if in doubt, cite the source. Please include a URL to all additional sources.
DISCLAIMER: Originality of attachments and AI usuage will be verified by Turnitin. Both you and your instructor will receive the results.
Use “The Taming of the Shrew: Women, Acting and Power” and/or “Patriarchy, Pedagogy, and The Divided Self” to interpret The Taming of the Shrew. Do you agree with your chosen article(s) argument? You may use outside sources to prove your points.

Assignment Directions: Proposal Argument 1
Proposal Argument 1 is a research-based proposal argument that convinces readers to take action to solve a problem or address an issue in the student’s academic/professional field. The proposal must specifically impact the student’s academic/professional field.
Basic requirements:
Point value: 125 pts
Length requirement: 5–7 pages (excluding cover page, abstract, and references)
Format: APA
Font: Times New Roman size 12
Description:
Proposal Argument 1 is our chance to solve a problem (or at least start thinking about a solution!) We will write a proposal argument that explains the importance of solving a problem or addressing an issue related to our academic/professional field. We follow the basic outline of an argument: introduction, background, lines of argument, alternative arguments, and conclusion. In the second paragraph, we must explain our personal connection to the issue. We are encouraged to use the first person singular (“I/me”) throughout.
Purpose:
The paper presents our proposal for reasonable, measurable change that needs to take place in a specific academic/professional field. The thesis will propose a specific solution, and we will support the thesis with credible evidence throughout the paper.
Research requirement:
Five sources minimum. At least four scholarly sources must be obtained via the library databases and other credible search engines like Google Scholar; at least one credible/relevant primary source (interview, survey, etc.) For more information on conducting primary research, please see Chapter 17 in Faigley (“Exploring in the Field”). Please be aware of avoiding confirmation bias before beginning research as the solution(s) to the problem may evolve through research.
Intended audience:
Let’s assume the readers are not familiar with the specific academic/professional field or the problem/issue at the paper’s center. They want to learn about a reasonable solution to the problem/issue.
Key performance criteria:
We meet the basic assignment requirements.
We explain our personal connection to the issue in the second paragraph.
We address the assigned intended audience.
The essay focuses on a reasonable/measurable arguable problem/issue at a specific level as assigned.
The thesis (proposal) proposes a specific solution to a specific problem/issue.
The argument follows the basic structure of an argument.
The proposal is supported with specific, properly cited examples from at least four scholarly sources and one credible/relevant primary source.
The argument considers all sides of an issue—including alternative proposals—and uses a balanced, considerate, and inclusive tone (no “you” use).
