Purpose:
In Essay 1, we examined how an author uses logical, ethical, and emotional appeals to set a tone and persuade an audience. Keep in mind how to form effective appeals and show good credibility as you begin to look at other arguments. The main focus of this essay is to respond to an argument, essentially making your own argument by agreeing or disagreeing with another author’s claim..
Skills:
Online, we’re bombarded with many sources of information from friends posting links to parents sending us videos about how to optimize our day, okay maybe that’s a little specific. Part of this is about locating what you agree and disagree with and why you agree or disagree. However, it’s also important to be able to support your response whether you’re agreeing or disagreeing. Use this response to explore how to make better written arguments either online to a friend or seriously in a business proposal.
Knowledge:
This assignment is meant to help with being critical of sources found online and in print. It is the class introduction to finding reliable evidence that will help scrutinize and potentially support an opinion. This assignment is meant to give you practice making a good argument, so that you can craft your own argument in the next essay and better convince people in your life.
Task:

After or during a brief summary of the article, state what points you agree or disagree with. Do some research and find some reliable sources that support your position. You are also free to change or adjust your position based on the research, just make sure to change your position in your thesis and topic sentences as well.
Be sure your essay contains:
Summarize the article you’re responding to. (This should be the Introduction)
Focus on one specific part to respond to
What is the issue you agree or disagree with?
State your position on the issue. (Thesis)Remember to keep your focus on a specific argument. [Refer to Chapter 4, p. 83-89]
Do a little research on the topic. Keep focused only on the most important and recent things that your audience needs to know about the problem that leads into your argument: definitions, events, etc.
Don’t start too vague or too far back in time.
What is the Problem? [Describe in Introduction]
Cite some quotes from the article you chose and state how and why you agree or disagree with the original article. What evidence are you basing your agreement or disagreement on?
Remember, the audience you are targeting does not agree with you. What can persuade the audience to take your side?
Develop logical, ethical, and emotional appeals to support your position and convince your readers.Don’t use all emotional appeals or logical appeals; blend the types of arguments you use.
