For this week, you will be writing a Review Essay in which you consider a film or an album or a streaming series that you have had a positive or a negative reaction to. As you begin to gather ideas and draft an outline of your review, remember the characteristic features of a successful review: relevant background information, criteria for evaluation, a well-supported evaluation, attention to the audience’s needs and expectations, an authoritative tone, and awareness of the ethics of reviewing. I will look for these things in your review when grading them.
A strong warning: since we are reviewing films and music and other forms of popular culture, the internet is full of reviews for any film or collection of songs we might consider. Do not use sources for this essay! Even if you just read a review of the movie or album you have chosen, the language of the source will stand in the way of you developing your own voice and your own stance toward the object of your review. Avoid the opinions and writings of others so that you can formulate your own. Please trust yourself and the feelings you have about the object you are reviewing. Think about the examples we have read in this section of the course, and of the moves that we have seen reviewers make in our readings.
Your essay should be between 750 and 900 words long, should be in MLA format, and should be turned in by 11:59pm Monday, June 10. You must upload a .docx or .pdf file. If you are using Pages or Google Docs, you must convert before uploading. Do not use AI to help you compose the essay! We must make mistakes in order to learn and grow in our writing!

Consider the impact reality television has had on society since its debut. For i

Consider the impact reality television has had on society since its debut. For instance, what effect has reality television had on stereotypes, expectations of beauty, or competition? Using reputable sources and evidence to support your claims, research an effect that reality television has on society and explain the significance of its impact…..As part of your research, you may refer to the course material for supporting evidence, but you must also use at least four credible, outside sources per proposal and cite them using MLA format as well. Please include a mix of both primary and secondary sources, with at least one source from a scholarly peer-reviewed journal. Please also cite them in MLA (including the lesson title and instructor’s name).
Primary sources are first-hand accounts such as interviews, advertisements, speeches, statements, and press releases.
Secondary sources come from peer-reviewed scholarly journals, such as the Journal of Management. You may use sources like JSTOR, Google Scholar, and Social Science Research Network to find articles from these journals. Secondary sources may also come from reputable websites with .gov, .edu, or .org in the domain. (Wikipedia is not a reputable source, though the sources listed in Wikipedia articles may be acceptable.)

In our last assignment, we rhetorically analyzed an advertisement by focusing on intended audience and emotional appeals. We are noticing and understanding that anytime we participate with media, we engage with other peoples’ beliefs, stances, opinions, and arguments. In our class, then, we are looking at how authors in various types of media have discussed, analyzed, and confronted a controversial issue from their own personal viewpoint.
For this assignment, please rhetorically analyze two articles and/or videos on the same topic or controversial issue. You are welcome to choose a topic/issue we have discussed in class lectures, but please do not choose the same topic or sources you did for Essay #1, or the sources that I have used in lectures. Remember: a rhetorical analysis, as well as compare & contrast, are BOTH argumentative essays. We will discuss how to write arguments within both of these subgenres of argument.
Your essay is analytical, evaluative, and argumentative, meaning you look at both what and how the authors are making their arguments and you have a clear stance on how effectively or ineffectively they have made their arguments. Your thesis (and stance) are not your own view on the issue/controversy; your thesis is your argument on how these authors made their argument concerning the issue/controversy. Also, you are required to rhetorically analyze induction, deduction, premises, conclusions, and/or fallacies in your rhetorical analysis, not just the key terms we went over in Essay #2. Your essay should have a structure that makes it easy for your reader to understand your argument and follow your thoughts. You should use a standard structure, such as: Introduction + Claim, Body Paragraphs, and Conclusion.
Your paper must be between 1,000-1,300 words and must follow the MLA Guidelines: double-spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman, one-inch margins, with the appropriate header. The rubric for this assignment is on the back of this page and clearly explains how I will be grading your work. Again, I significantly mark down your grade if you are under the page requirement.

Your answer should explore ONE literary text (a novel, novella, play, narrative

Your answer should explore ONE literary text (a novel, novella, play, narrative poem, poetry collection, or collection of stories), from any module undertaken in Stage One or Two, and TWO relevant readings from The Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism, Third Edition.  The objective of this assignment is to assess your understanding of the challenges posed by Theory to your understanding of literary analysis.
The category of the Other is as primordial as consciousness itself. In the most primitive societies, in the most ancient mythologies, one finds the expression of a duality – that of the Self and the Other.’ (Simone de Beauvoir)
Using TWO relevant readings from the Norton Anthology, discuss the ways in which otherness – racial or sexual – is constructed in ONE literary text you have read this year. (photos of one reading from this year are in attached files)

Human Rights Educational Flyer
For this assignment, you will create an educational flyer on a single current human rights issue.  You are free to choose a human rights issue that interests you from UN Human Rights list HERE.  Gun rights pro/con and abortion pro/con cannot be used.  The flyer topic also needs to be based on a current issue, not a historical event.
The flyer will be created in Microsoft Word.  The first page of your Word document will be the flyer; the flyer is to be one page in length only.  The second page of your Word document will contain your 7 sentences (see below) and MLA formatted works cited page including your researched information and image sources.  While you will include researched support, the majority (80%) of the flyer’s text content must be in your own original words. Researched support must be specific (not general) such as specific examples, data, and so on.
The flyer must include:
2 images only, no more and no less.  A picture of a quote is not considered an image.
At least 7 sentences of text including a topic sentence identifying and explaining the human rights issue, support, and solutions for the problem that the flyer’s readers can enact.
Be sure to study the Assignment Workshop for information on using credible sources.  Cite information source(s) and all images.
Please see this guide for how to format your sources.
Submit the assignment as one file only in either Word or PDF file format.
