Consumerism Debate
Many people argue that the emphasis on acquiring and buying things—sometimes called consumerism—has gone too far in American society. We often buy things that we do not need, and we even buy things that we do not especially enjoy. These consumer habits can lead to psychological harm and even financial ruin. The problem is not limited to individual consumers; society is becoming aware that these behaviors are having lasting effects on the environment as Americans produce more waste than ever before.
If the downsides to consumerism seem obvious to so many people, why do Americans still buy so much stuff? Is it due to a lack of self-control, corporate greed, the consequence of American culture, social pressures exacerbated by social media, or something else? How do we explain the rise of American consumerism, and what should we do about it?
Prompt
Using the information from the readings, class discussions, and your own observations and experiences, identify an important element of consumerism and take a stance on that issue.

Drug Use and Neurotransmitters – “This is Your Brain on Drugs”
Recreational drugs are prevalent in many places – school, college, work and so on.  The chapter on biological foundations of behavior discusses the importance of the neurotransmitters that carry neural messages.  These messages can either enhance the effects of some neurotransmitters, or they can block the reuptake of neurotransmitters. The title of this assignment is from a commercial about drug use and brain effects from the 1980s.  I have included it below.  Please watch it prior to doing the assignment.
Classic frying pan video
This following brief video will help you visualize the location of neurons in the brain, and the purpose they serve.
The Neuron
The following video, on neurotransmitters should help you see first hand and better understand the path that neurotransmitters take in the brain.
2-Minute Neuroscience: Synaptic Transmission
Consider all that you have read in the chapters on biological psychology, the videos you watched here and the crash course ones about the nervous system, neuron and particularly synapses.  Now that you know more about neurons and neurotransmitters, I would like you to consider how drugs affect our brains and functioning.
Use one of the search engines on our school library web site to get information about how recreational drugs affect the brain.  Look up a drug that may have been used by you, your peers or family members at some point. Make sure that you use sources that are peer reviewed.  These are articles by research psychologists, writing for professional readers.
Your research paper should be at leastthree full pages, double spaced and should respond to all of the issues below. The text of the document only is included in the three full pages – meaning there should be at least three pages of substantive content, the reference page will be the 4th page, and you should use at least 2 peer reviewed sources.  The paper may be longer, it may not be shorter.  In text citations and references at the end should be in APA style.
Discuss your findings about how the drug interacts with the neurotransmitters in the brain.  Please make sure that you include citations (and/or URLs)  for the sources.  Please make sure that you write your paper in your own words.
How does the drug you studied affect cognition – memory, thinking, reaction time etc? Discuss both the long term and short term cognitive effects.
What happens when you stop taking the drug? What are the short term and long term effects of taking this drug.
Does it have addictive properties?  If so, how do the addictive properties evidence themselves.
Finally conduct an in depth critical analysis of the personality and functionality impact of the drug use on those who you know that have been affected by the drug, or on what you had heard about the drug in the past.
Please understand that once you upload your document, it will go through an originality check, that will show us both that you wrote the paper in your own words.  Please note that while you may not see it on the originality report, Turnitin does alert me to whether you used AI to write your paper.

If the body positivity movement had to select its unofficial MVP, it would definitely be Lizzo. Known for her catchy songs like ” Truth Hurts https://youtu.be/P00HMxdsVZI?si=WjKFYpEK6yvtG0sQ and Good as Hell https://youtu.be/SmbmeOgWsqE?si=E6VdWK4B8AC3CFEp this singer-songwriter, rapper, and flutist unabashedly celebrates her own body and urges fans to accept themselves, no matter their shape, size, color, gender, or sexuality. Recently, though, celebrity trainer Jillian Michaels (famous for her tenure on the reality television show The Biggest Loser) drew ire from Lizzo’s fans by expressing concern about Lizzo’s health on social media. Little did she know that she was treading on controversial ground in the body positivity movement: the intersection between size and health. Enter into this debate yourself by reading Katelyn Esmonde’s Vox article “What Jillian Michaels Got Wrong about Lizzo and Body Positivity” https://www.vox.com/culture/2020/1/15/21060692/lizzo-jillian-michaels-body-positivity-backlash and answer the following questions. In response to praise of Lizzo’s self-acceptance, Jillian Michaels declared, “Why are we celebrating her [Lizzo’s] body? … ‘Cause it isn’t going to be awesome if she gets diabetes. I’m just being honest. Like, I love her music. … But there’s never a moment where I’m like, ‘And I’m so glad she’s overweight!’” Do you feel that Michaels is justified in her comments? Why or why not? Also, consider Michaels’s potential authority on the topics of health and body. Do these lend more credibility to her comments on Lizzo? Why or why not? Esmonde (the author of the article) argues that “by publicly speculating about Lizzo’s susceptibility to diabetes or other chronic diseases, Michaels is doing more harm than good.” What specifically does the writer mean by this? How exactly does she see Michaels’s comments as causing harm (sometimes even literal) to fat people? The author also explores scientific research that complicates our understanding of the relationship between health and weight. Explain how Esmonde argues that poor health is not always related to fatness (and vice versa), using specific examples from the text. Lastly, the author attempts to distinguish expressing concern for someone’s health and fat-shaming. What do you see as the difference between these two things? Do you believe that Jillian Michaels was legitimately worried about Lizzo’s health or was she engaging in a type of fat shaming (or even something else entirely)? Explain your reasoning.

As you begin striving toward your professional goals and future careers, you may

As you begin striving toward your professional goals and future careers, you may notice the term “grit” popping up in more and more motivational speeches, college applications, and job descriptions. Merriam-Webster defines “grit” as “a small hard sharp particle (as of sand)” or “firmness of mind or spirit : unyielding courage.” It is this second definition which has given “grit” new life, becoming a watchword for businesses and colleges across the nation, emblazoned across highway billboards and university marquees. In Jerry Useem’s “Is Grit Overrated?,” the author explores this latest branding of self-determination by speaking with Angela Duckworth, University of Pennsylvania psychology professor and author of Grit. Read Useem’s article, which both explores and critiques Duckworth’s concept of “grit,” and respond to the questions below. One of Duckworth’s most revelatory discoveries is how truly successful people deal with feelings like “frustration, disappointment, [and] boredom.” What does Duckworth argue that people with “grit” do with these emotions that separates them from their less-successful counterparts? While Duckworth continues to emphasize the importance of “grit” for achieving one’s goals, how does the article’s author prove to us that many businesses and clients actually do not prefer “grit”? Provide particular examples from the article to reinforce your points. What does Jerry Useem argue are the drawbacks of making our challenges more visible? What does the author of the article state, though, is beneficial to being more open about our difficulties? Do you, personally, feel that being transparent about the struggles of success is good or bad? Why? Useem also critiques Duckworth’s focus on “directional consistency.” What specifically does “directional consistency” mean, and why does the author believe that this might hinder someone’s success? Can you think of another reason why “directional consistency” might be more damaging to success than helpful? Explain yourself fully, using specific examples and details.
