Flannery O’connor: “Everything that Rises Must Converge”

1. Examine the references to eyes, sight, and so on, in “Everything That Rises.” What do these references reveal about Julian’s perspective through most of the story? At the end of the story?
2.In “Everything that Rises,” does Mrs. Chestny’s encounter with violence prepare her “to accept her moment of grace”? Or is Mrs. Chestny simply doomed because of her bigotry? You may use O’Connor’s essays and letters selections in your response as another primary source, if desired.
3.Write an essay comparing and contrasting O’Connor’s and Joyce’s use of characterization, setting, or symbolism in “Everything that Rises Must Converge” and “Araby.”

READINGS FOR ASSIGNMENT:
: Louise Erdrich: “The Plague of Doves” (67)
Margaret Atwood: “Lusus Naturae” (258) OR Gabriel Garcia Marquez: “A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings” (428)
Gerard Manley Hopkins: “God’s Grandeur” (1197), “Pied Beauty” (888), “Spring and Fall” (1197)
Ada Limon: “Dandelion Insomnia” (896)
Answer each of the following in 100 words.
Consider the role religion, specifically Catholicism, plays in “The Plague of Doves.” For instance, references are made to the season of Lent leading up to Easter and to Mooshum’s brother being a priest. Does this religious backdrop directly impact what the narrator tells us or what she seems to care about?
What is the effect of “Praise him” (11)? Does “Pied Beauty” lead to expect such an ending?
Read “God’s Grandeur” silently and then read it again aloud. It may also be helpful to listen to the recorded version linked in this folder. What stands out to you upon hearing the poem aloud? (pay special attention to his use of alliteration, assonance, anaphora, and parallelism; look in the Glossary of our textbook for help with these terms) You may also compare these poetic elements to another one of his poems that we read this week, if desired.
Discuss the picture of the narrator “Dandelion Insomnia” allows you to form. Consider word choice, voice (tone), and the use of symbolism in your response.
