ENGL 214 | Source Notes (1%) Rubric
Task Requirements
Source Notes must include: (1) The Report title; (2) an APA Style reference; (3) a summary of the source, or section of the source, in the student’s own words; (4) useful praphrases and/or figures from the source; (5) at least three questions for discussion; (6) an evaluation that addresses the TRAAP (timeliness, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose) of the source. Other requirements: (1) To receive a grade for this assignment, students must have submitted all previous Report-related assignments. (2) Students must use the template provided, and follow the instructions within. (3) Students must cite all of the sources for each Source Note in the subsequent In-Class Drafts. (4) Two of the four sources used for the Source Notes must also be cited in Draft 3 of the Report. Failure to adhere to these requirements will result in an F (0%) grade for the assignment, and may result in the student being barred from submitting subsequent Report-related assignments.
Grade Source Notes (50% + 50%)
A+ Excellent ● source meets acceptability criteria; is clearly relevant to the Report ● suggests close reading and relatively thoughful examination of the source; can essentially replace the original source ● all sections are complete; elaborations and explanations are provided where necessary (e.g., for evaluations) ● summary notes conform to bullet point and word-length requirements ● student’s voice is consistent throughout
D Poor ● source does not meet acceptability criteria; is not clearly relevant to the Report ● suggests partial reading or skimming of the source with a very limited attempt to examine the source; student would likely have to return to the source when writing the Report ● one or more sections are incomplete; elaborations and explanations are mostly superficial or missing in some sections ● summary notes do not conform to bullet point and word-length requirements (e.g., includes full sentences) ● student’s voice is noticeably inconsistent in some sections
F Fail ● source does not meet acceptability criteria; is not clearly relevant to the Report ● suggests very little, if any, reading of the source; student would definitely have to return to the source to write the Report ● most sections are incomplete; elaborations and explanations in the evaluation are obviously superficial or missing in most sections ● summary notes do not show any attempt to conform to requirements (e.g., block text) ● student’s voice is inconsistent in most sections ● egregious plagiarism ● no content
Notes
● Three grades are possible for this assignment: A+ (100%), D (60%), and F (0%). “In-between” grades are not possible, except in cases where a Source Note was submitted late (e.g., an excellent source note is submitted 25 hours late, and thus a 10% penalty is applied). ● Acceptable sources include: (1) articles from academic journals; (2) academic and peer-edited books; (3) articles and multimedia published by reputable magazines and news organizations; (4) official reports from governments, international organizations, or non-governmental organizations; and (5) exceptional sources that feature an author or creator widely regarded as an expert in their field.
