Instructors Promt: Reflect on and discuss your motivation for your research with regard to ethical conduct, stewardship, and dissemination of research in relation to the following quote:
If the sacred-secular distinction fades and we grant that all truth is ultimately God’s truth, then intellectual work can be God’s work as much as preaching the gospel, feeding the hungry, or healing the sick. It, too, is a sacred task. ~ Arthur Holmes (Philosopher)

Student Reply 1: Lexa Kincaid-Jack:
What a beautiful quote! This so elegantly sums up my educational mantra that there should be no dichotomy between Christian education and excellent academics. I have seen Christian professionals often lag in the category of excellence. This saddens me because the Kingdom should have the best of every kind of professional: the best doctors, lawyers, teachers, scientists, waste management, grocery clerks, and every other job that exists. We are called to do everything as if we are doing it directly unto the Lord (New International Version, 1978/2011). It is easy, as believers, to get caught between the two tomorrows- the today on earth and our future in Heaven. I have seen family and friends limit themselves, their educational aspirations, and their business decisions because they planned on the Lord coming within the next few years and did not see a need to plan for the future. I truly hope that Jesus does come back within my lifetime, but I want to manage the time that I have on earth in a way that honors the Master and multiplies the talents that He has given me (New International Version, 1978/2011). While we are on earth we should be hustling, taking ground for the Kingdom. This is the mentality that has propelled me forward in my education. I want to be the absolute best educator that I can be, to affect and leverage the greatest kingdom change possible through little ones.
I believe with all my heart that I can worship the Lord through my research in early childhood education just as I can worship Him through song and prayer. We were created on purpose, with a purpose. Just as Adam and Eve were given the job of caring for the garden, we have jobs that are meant to glorify the King. As a researcher, I am constantly seeking answers to questions and attempting to find new and better ways of doing things. My goal is to leave the world of academia a little better than I found it by learning new things and sharing that data with others in the field. One must not be in vocational ministry to minister unto the Lord in their work. Seeking and finding is a Biblical concept that the Lord promises to honor when it is Him that we are ultimately searching for (New International Version, 1978/2011). I am so excited to be a heavenly worker with every statistic I run, with every paper I publish, and with every source that I cite! It is all for growth and expansion of the Kingdom of Light. What a joy and honor it is that we have a choice in the kind of work of work that we choose to take part in and that we cans serve in so many different, interesting, fun, and exciting ways!

As I reflect on my motivation for research, I am driven by a desire to see teachers succeed and all students, regardless of background, receive an equitable, high-quality education. This goal is rooted in biblical principles that emphasize the importance of education, equity, and serving others.
Proverbs 22:6 urges us to “Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” This emphasizes the power of education in shaping the lives of individuals. By conducting research to uncover best practices in education, I aim to contribute to the fulfillment of this biblical principle, helping to set children on the path of success and ensuring they have the resources they need to excel academically and beyond.
Research in education aligns with biblical principles of education, equity, and service to others. By embracing this perspective, I am committed to conducting research with a deep sense of purpose, knowing that my work has the potential to positively impact the lives of teachers and students, ultimately contributing to the greater good.

Student Replay 3: Emma Rogers:
This quote created a meaningful reflection on the upcoming dive into research for my dissertation. The broad topic of the dissertation is Title IX, but it will be narrowed down to the correlation of recognizing the signs of sexual abuse in students and the frequency of their training. This quote caused me to reflect on how the topic needs to be handled in care. The topic of sexual abuse in Children is a sensitive topic that can be hard for many people to talk about. This quote told me that any true research that is void of all secular connections is God’s work. In the case of my topic, children and precious to the lord. I am reminded of the verse, “But Jesus called them to him, saying, “Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God,”(Luke 18:16, English Standard Version). Negative actions against children usually have a common reaction from the public. The quote reminds me that the topic of children will be criticized and under a microscope. As a researcher, ethical conduct and stewardship will need to be above par since the topic could influence policy involving children. As Christians, it is our job to be a voice that cannot be a voice for themselves. “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed. Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice.” (Proverbs 31:8-9, English Standard Version) An important phrase I take from those verses, “See that they get justice”. As Christians, we are to be advocates and seek justice for the voiceless. Children generally do not have a voice to advocate for themselves. They depend on their parents, teachers, and adult figures in their lives. The goal of this dissertation is to prove the current requirements for teacher training in Title IX are not effective in protecting students in the school environment. In regards to the consideration of dissemination of information, this quote reminds us of the importance of keeping the data, privacy, and confidentiality of the participants secure. Since the research is God’s work, the security of survey responses and the involvement of the participants is vital because their results either show the strengths or weaknesses of their training. This quote is a great reminder to researchers they are held to a high standard.
