The Theories And Construction Of Deviance

Strain Theory

Strain theory helps to define and explain deviance because it relates the lack of resources with the acts one performs to help them live. Meaning, if someone has to do something illegal or against the grain in order to get food on the table or an income or something to help their livelihood, they will. They don’t have the means to achieve theses cultural goals in an “acceptable” way so they find a different way.

Conflict Theory

Conflict theory helps define and explain deviance because it views social life and status as a competition. It shows that in order to be seen in society as successful or popular, they will do whatever it takes, even if their path to it is deviant. This is especially prevalent in young people who want to “fit in.”

Differential Association Theory

Differential Association Theory helps define and explain deviance because it states that people learn how to exist and interact by how they observe others doing it. This means that if someone witnesses others being deviant, they will in turn do the same. Deviant behavior is learned rather than embedded in someone from birth.

People need food to survive. Sometimes jobs don’t pay enough or they are unable to get a job at all or they have other things they need to spend money on. It is seen as deviant, but they could not survive without committing this act. They had fewer resources, but did what they could to get some.

Alcoholism

Some people do not have the means to go through the American dream of higher education and well paying jobs. In order to not feel anything they turn to alcohol to forget their troubles. It’s their way of continuing living, despite lacking in many other parts of life.

Embezzlement of $100,000 by a bank employee

Some jobs don’t pay as well as some people need to feel like they are surviving sustainably. In order to have a better lifestyle, they use nontraditional means to get finances to make their life better. They have less resources but found their way to get more.

Opioid crisis: Big Pharma vs. Drug Dealers

Since pharmacies are seen as safe and controlled, they are not seen as deviant. But drug dealers are seen as criminal and deviant. They may be selling the same thing in the same does, but only one will be put on trial. Whether they are selling more recreational drugs, or selling medical drugs that people can’t pay to go to the doctor to get prescribed, they will be seen as the bad ones in society.

Violence: Wealthy and Poor

There is such a division between these two groups. They have many opposing views and find it hard to see eye to eye. The poor may feel as if this is unjustified and may react violently. Or the wealthy may see themselves as better and not find it bad to hurt those that are “lesser” than them.

Manipulation of stock prices

People want to be on top, and this is one way to do so. Financial gain is a priority of many. This deviance is done in order to put themselves higher on the social ladder.

Aggravated Assault among 18-25 year old men

This assault was learned by witnessing or noticing other doing the same previously. This action is a result of observing and repeating.

Gang warfare among teenagers and young adults. Young adults were exposed to this behavior and then repeated it. They did not just simply come out of the womb believing in warfare between gangs. They were raised in a subculture where the others were “bad guys” and they believe this is something that should be done.

It is constructed by the society it is in. Deviance in one area may not be the same in another. For example, in America, women driving is just a thing and is very normalized, but in other foreign countries it is unheard of and punishable. It is created by cultural values and the people within the given society.

Is Deviant Behaviour In Society Linked To Family Dynamics?

Man is a social animal and our behaviour in society affects everyone around us. Families raise children that grow up becoming a part of society and therefore nurturing right behaviour is important for a healthy and positive society. I chose this topic as I come from a very family-oriented home, and I occasionally wonder about the behaviour of ill-mannered or badly brought up children, and the reason why they are that way. I often conclude that the cause of the child’s deviant behaviour is probably due to the family environment they grow up in.

These children brought up in homes with poor family dynamics are more likely to grow up portraying deviant behaviour and contribute to crime in society. People have many theories as to what makes a criminal, some of these conclusions are based either on first-hand knowledge or some are unfortunately based on racism and prejudice, while the rest are left to scientific investigations. Research shows that crime is never particular to one cause but may include a combination of factors like economic conditions, family structure, traditions and culture, women and child rights amongst many others. It is only when perspectives globally and closer home are researched against these factors, will we be able to reach a better understanding.

GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

`It is said that positive family influence on children at an early age produces children that positively contribute to society.’ Whereas broken families or abusive families tend to have children that negatively contribute to society. Research says that 70% of criminals come from broken homes. Thus families that tolerate bad behaviour from children are more likely to have these children grow up to be criminal juveniles or adults. There are many reasons for broken homes, economic conditions being one of them. Research states that in developed countries citizens worry less of having to earn a livelihood and instead can divert attention to other positive ways to contribute to society, as also leaving more time to bringing up children.

Venezuela has the highest crime rate in the world at 84.86 in the crime index. It is famous for robberies and pickpockets, this is due to the poor economy, where the average monthly income of an individual is $ 2.00 which is due to inflation. On the other hand, Iceland is the world’s safest country with its peace index at 1.072. The average monthly income is $5,030.

Areas with similar population sizes and different economic conditions point to a relation between poverty and crime. In Arlington, Virginia the median household income is $105,76. This is $46731 higher than the U.S median household income and only 9% of people live under the poverty line. The crime rate here is 17.58 with violent crime at 1.37 and property crimes at 16.20. On the other hand, Garland with a similar population has the median household income at $51,997 which is $7,042 less than the US median household income. 17.2% of the people live under the poverty line and the crime rate here is 34.75 with violent crime at 3.01 and property crime at 31.75.

Though economic well being helps stable family dynamics, it may not prevent deviant behaviour because other factors mentioned above also play a role in defining behaviour patterns. US and UK despite being more developed nations remain at position 49 and 59 respectively on the crime index, higher on the scale than India, a developing nation which is at position 65, this is possibly due to India’s closer family structures.

Finland believes fathers play a crucial role in child development. The government offers fathers nine weeks of paternity leave, during which they are paid 70% of their salary. Family structure is changing drastically, families are becoming smaller and family values are getting diluted. A joint family in the past had more adults present to teach children the values their families stood by in society. Iceland and Finland which have been ranked to be the safest countries in the world have the best child care programs and women are treated as equals. Iceland ranks first in gender equality and Finland ranks third.

Papua New Guinea with the second-highest crime rate in the world is a patriarchal society and has very few rights for woman and children. An estimated 70 per cent of women in Papua New Guinea experience rape or assault in their lifetime. 67% of women in the country suffer from domestic abuse.

There are a variety of reasons which contribute to deviant behaviour leading to crime, but what emerges clearly is that globally it is a combination of these factors which finally define the health of a society.

NATIONAL PERSPECTIVE

India, an economically developing South Asian country, is home to the second-largest population in the world with 1.3 billion people. It is a multicultural country with many different traditions and cultures, family structures and values making it ideal to research.

More than 70% of India’s population lives in rural areas. In rural areas families focus on farming and therefore tend to be larger. Larger families have more adults and elders who supervise and teach their children family values they stand by in society. As compared to some Western societies where families are smaller, India falls midway in the world crime index possibly due to its family structures.

It is not always guaranteed that family structures will prevent deviant behaviour. 18.62% of India’s rural population lives in Uttar Pradesh which has large families and 29.43% of this population lives under the poverty line. Uttar Pradesh has been ranked the most dangerous state many times in the last few years despite its large family structures. Culturally in the State, more freedom and attention is given to the boy child than the girl, this often leads to the men believing they are more superior and commit crime against women. Uttar Pradesh recorded the maximum number of crimes against women with 56,011 cases in 2017. Majority of cases under crimes against women were registered under “cruelty by husband or his relatives’ at 27.9%, followed by “assault on women ‘ at 21.7%, “kidnapping and abduction of women’ at 20.5% and “rape’ accounting for 7.0%.

PERSONAL PERSPECTIVE

I come to form a very family-oriented house, though we are a small family my mother chose to not take up a job and instead spent time with us in our early developing years. This resulted in family values being passed on to us rather than learning from other caregivers. We communicate a lot as a family and are able to exchange our ideas to learn what is right from wrong.

I have seen some parents outsource their role to other caregivers which results in children not getting enough quality parental time, they become attention-seeking and portray negative behaviour. These children usually are manipulative, bullies and are more likely to display deviant behaviour in society as they grow up.

In our developing years, we had restricted screen time and instead would be doing brain-stimulating activities like arts, craft, outdoor activities and pursuing hobbies. Unsupervised screen time at an early age could lead children to absorb violent and inappropriate content which may lead them to believe those actions are acceptable in society. I have noticed people jumping traffic lights and throwing garbage on the side of the road which is small scale deviant behaviours and shows poor upbringing and lack of right family and societal values. To a large extent, I believe that poor family dynamics finally leads to more serious crime in society.

POSSIBLE SCENARIOS

With people seeking economic improvement and development, they are likely to migrate from rural areas to urbanised areas. This migration will break the larger rural family structure to smaller urbanised families. Working parents will have less time to give attention to their children which is likely to have a negative influence on family values and dynamics. Therefore In developing nations taking into account all these factors crime and social disturbance is likely to increase.

In today’s age, the internet gives full access to a verity of content. Social media has become a platform where people share their views and opinions which has an overall influence on the behaviour of people. Therefore in the information age family values are likely to get diluted and unless positive influence is generated, there is a possibility of an increase in deviant behaviour in society.

POSSIBLE COURSES OF ACTION

Developing countries should have policies to encourage rural populations to stay back to be able to make a profitable livelihood. Agriculture if made more sustainable by improving infrastructure and organising retail will help farmers. Further providing credit and technology will give a boost, thereby slowing down migration and its connected problems.

Improving ways in which families can devote more time with children like parental leave in Finland is important. We as a society need to agree on putting proper controls on the internet so that unrestricted negative content is not available to influence the behaviour of people. Devices should be restricted to a certain age and app should make child-friendly versions of themselves such as Netflix and now youtube.

Parents that afford devices for there children should not have it connected to the wifi and instead download content that they want their child to watch or play this I s safer the exposing the child to the internet where it can gain incorporate and violence content at an early age.

Govermnets should have campaigns that educate people in rural and urban areas about the importance of familys and the role it plays when is come to deviance in society

CONCLUSION

After the research I have conducted I conclude that the economic condition that a criminal comes form plays a large role in his/hers devient behaviour, however, I also feel that the environment they are brought up in play a significant role too. Violent actions against a child at a young age by a respected individual often results in the child assuming violence is acceptable in society leading them to portray deviant behaviour. I feel that unsupervised screen at a young age can also lead children to portray devient behaviour as they have full access to the internet and can often end up watching violent and inappropriate content.

I also strongly feel that the way women are treated in society play a large role in levels of devient behaviour amongst young adults and adults. Finally deviant behaviour depands on all these factor but most important and common factor, in my opinion and from the facts that i have gathered, is the way families intract and grow.

Obesity as a Form of Deviance

Introduction

Deviance is defined as ‘any action, belief, or human characteristics that members of a society or social group consider a violation of a group norms for which the violator is likely to be censured or punished.’ (Ritzer, 2016).

As such obesity can be seen as a form of social deviance. The reason being in certain aspects of everyday life, it is being stigmatized. Obesity can be defined as the increase of the body mass index as a result of fat buildup in the body which is more than the skeletal and physical specifications. However, despite the challenges being faced in reality about obesity, there are evidences to show that obesity is being accepted in our society.

Topics of discussion in this report include causes of obesity, complications of obesity, ways in which obesity is punished, preventions of obesity and evidences of how the stigma of obesity is changing.

Causes of Obesity

Family Inheritance and Influences – Gene inheritance from parents usually influences the how the body stores fats, how much is stored and where the fats are shared. Health habits are usually influenced by family members. For example in Guyanese homes, if roti is cooked three times a day, most family members would have no choice but to eat was is cooked in the home.

Life Choices- At the end of the day, it all depends on one’s choice. Some people choose to eat the unhealthiest and high-calorie foods and neglect the healthiest of fruits and vegetables. This contribute greatly to one’s overall weight and BMI. Also influencing your weight, is the level of inactivity. Eating lots of high calorie food and not exercising to burn the calories allows the fat to be stored in the body.

Social and Economic Issues- In some cases, there may be the unavailability of safe areas to exercise. Also, there may be little or no access to healthy foods or healthy forms of cooking. Age- As one gets older, there may be little or no active lifestyle since age influences the muscle strength in the human body which results in low metabolism. Due to these reasons, an older person may have a higher probability to become obese.

Certain Disease – Arthritis is a condition in which the joints in the human body swells and becomes tender. This may result in decreased activity, hence, weight gain.

Complications of Obesity

  • Heart disease and Strokes – Obesity causes high blood pressure and abnormal cholesterol levels which may lead diseases. E.g. Atherosclerosis which is due to the fat build up in veins and arteries.
  • Type Two diabetes- Obesity can affect the way in which your body uses insulin to control blood sugar levels.
  • Sleep Apnea- this is a disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. This can lead to heart attack, stroke, dyspnea and even depression.
  • Osteoarthritis- The increase of weight on weight bearing joints eg. The knees, may induce stress which may lead to inflammation and pain. This is due to the wear and tear of the cartilage that protects and cushions the joints.
  • Gynecological Problems- These conditions occur in women whereby they are faced with irregular periods, urinary issue and sometimes infertility.

Ways in which obesity is punished

People hurl insults- For example, when waiting in a public transportation (bus) for it to load at the park, the conductor may bring along an obese passenger to be seated in the bus, you’d hear negative comments like ‘where you putting him/her’, ‘that’s two person seat’, etc. .These comments are insulting and hurtful.

Health care providers dismiss them- For instance, an obese person goes to his/her healthcare provider for medical treatment. Without asking or listening to the problem the doctor assumes that their problem is their weight. For some individuals, an arthritis pain means they can’t exercise as a normal person would.

Employers deny opportunities- Employers will feel that an obese person will not be productive in the work environment since they are limited due to their weight. For example, the position for a Marketing Assistant, this job requires the individual to make regular visits to customers and marketing brands. The employer will most likely select someone who is physically fit for this job even though he/she has all the skills and qualifications needed.

The media conveys disgust images of headless bellies and derisive stereotypes – For example, in some commercials, when advertising weight loss products, they would use an obese person to showcase that product, showing the excess body fat and the before and after images for using the product.

Ways in which the prevailing systems of sanctions impact new behaviors

Model Industry

In modern society, there has been a massive evolution of the model acceptance in the acceptance of the plus size models. Plus size models are now featured on many popular and reputable magazine covers. For example, Ashley Graham who was the first size sixteen model to be on the cover of sports Illustrated in 2016. Thereafter, she were on covers of Vogue, Elle and Glamour. By these happenings, she paved a way for other plus size models since after her success she became an advocate for body positivity and confidence.

Other plus size models include Tara Lynn, Marquita Pring and Tess holiday. Elle Magazine: Ashley Graham Cosmopolitan Magazine: Tess Holiday

Another valid point on this evolution of overweight models was pointed out by a member of our audience while presenting. She said that by placing Tess Holiday, who was clinically obese, on covers of magazines glamorizes obesity and unhealthiness. She mentioned that the much wider audience looking on (especially who are obese) would view her as a role model and would want to believe that they can stay the way they are and live unhealthy.

However, it does not glamorize obesity, it basically showcases that even obese people have the ability to be successful and can accomplish their dreams without their weight being a hindrance. It points out that if you want to be a model you do not have to starve yourself to be slim to walk on a catwalk, you can just be yourself. Also to note, at the end of the day one has their own choice, some may choose to exercise to lose weight and some may not.

Fashion Industry

There has been a revolution in the fashion industry right in Guyana. More boutiques are targeting plus size persons and catering for them via plus size clothing lines. Plus size clothing are more readily available in a wider variety. An industry that has stigmatized plus size clothing has now being catered and provided for.

Sports Industry (Cricket)

A great example from this aspect is the Caribbean cricketer Rahkeem Cornwall. Being 6’5 and having a weight of 140kgs, he has played immaculate. He is a spin bowler and a prodigious batsman. Recently, he scored 2,224 runs in the 2019 Test Series between Indian & WI and gained 260 wickets at an average of 23.9 in 55 outstanding matches. Also, he scored 75 runs from 30 balls which led to Saint Lucia Zouks to their first win in CPL 2019 against Jamaica Tallawahs who lost by 5 wickets.

This shows that his weight is not a hindrance to his potential and successes in his career. He continues to prove that he can accomplish any desire of his own.

Prevention

Many steps can be taken to prevent unhealthy weight gain and health related problems associated with obesity. Some of these steps are:

  • Exercising Regularly – At least 130 to 150 minutes of exercising is required to burn calories effectively. Activities include jogging, riding a bicycle and swimming which enhances cardiovascular functions within the body. This then allows blood to flow freely with maximum gaseous exchange.
  • A healthy diet plan- It is advised to intake foods and fruits that are low in calories and high in nutrients such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. This allows one to have a healthy Body mass index (BMI) and a low probability of suffering from health issues.
  • Monitor your weight regularly- This allows one to be conscious of their weight gain from consuming high calorie foods or weight loss from having an active and healthy lifestyle. It allows one to realize if their diet plan is effective or alternatives need to be considered. It serves as a guide to a healthy life style.
  • Consistency – It is advised to stick to your diet plans or health habits. This means during holidays, special outings, etc. one should still eat their healthy foods more and be aware of the amount of calorie’s being consumed so that weight isn’t gained rapidly.

Conclusion

Obesity is a form of social deviance where victims are punished by society for the way they appear. It is usually caused by lifestyle choices, genetics, age and social and economic issues. In addition, it may result in many health issues such as heart diseases, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis and gynecological problems. Being obese has a lot of daily challenges. Victims receive rejections in forms of insults, dismissal from the healthcare providers, denial from job opportunities and stereotyping. However, in most cases obesity can be prevented by simple modifications to one’s lifestyles such as exercising regularly, being conscious of one’s calorie intake and maintaining consistency.

As evidenced by the changing norms of society, industries and organizations have evolved in that people suffering from obesity are now given equal opportunities and are catered for. Evidences include, the increase in plus size models and clothing lines and the success of overweight athletes.

Correlation Of Deviance And Crime

Deviance is a path taken away from the social norms of certain societies. Deviant people tend to commit illegal crimes that are against these norms. Some people view certain crimes as deviant, while others may not. Crimes can be separated into two different categories, deviant and non-deviant. Non-deviant crimes are crimes that, although may be illegal, do not go against the norms of society. There can be categories such positive deviance as well as negative deviance. Positive deviance is beneficial for a society as people are not following norms for the good of the community and themselves. Negative deviance goes against the norms in a way that hurts a society and its people. All in all, it is up to the certain individual if a crime is considered deviant or not.

The first crime I would like to talk about is the old case of the Golden State Killer. This is an old case that has been pushed to the side due to the inability to solve it. The detectives could not find the true killer. Thanks to DNA evidence and new discoveries through books that entitled the crimes the killer committed, the police supposedly found the man that everyone called the Golden State Killer. This man Joseph DeAngelo was the suspected criminal of over 100 crimes that varied from killings, rapes, and robberies. This crime is considered to be a deviant crime by many sociologists due to the killings and robberies that took place. I would associate this crime with the labeling theory because according to The Washington Post, before DeAngelo committed his crimes, he witnessed another killer commit their crimes. DeAngelo responded by becoming intrigued with the killer and becoming a criminal of his own.

Another deviant crime that I would like to talk about is the violent murder of the rapper Tupac Shakur. According to CNN, Shakur was murdered by a certain gang while leaving a boxing match. He was shot multiple times in the chest causing his premature death. This violence was prevalent in the city they resided in. They lived in an area and time where gang activity was at a high as well as illegal activity. Due to this nature of environment, the deviant crime can be associated with Merton’s Strain Theory. The society encouraged certain deviant acts.

A non-deviant crime I want to talk about is the crime of theft that happened due to a mental illness. A man named Justin Volpe stole from another woman in Miami in 2007. According to Psychology Today, this was ruled as petty theft due to Volpe’s mental state. Volpe was experiencing hallucinations as well as a voice in his head that convinced him to steal which are symptoms of psychosis. This certain mental state caused Volpe’s case to be reconsidered. He was placed in a program that prevented him from serving jail time. This crime is considered non-deviant by sociologists due to the mental state of the man. The Medicalization of Deviance theory could be associated with this crime due to the cause of crime being the person’s mental state.

Another non-deviant crime that I want to talk about is the crime of robbery with a knife by John Champion in 2012. This man was handicapped due to a previous accident he was in. According to Ranker, after he robbed the convenient store with a knife, the police would not arrest him due to his physical disability. This is considered to be a non-deviant crime due to this physical disability. Much like the last crime, I would associate this case with the Medicalization of Deviance theory due to the state of Champion.

Deviance is a change in society that can be impactful or tragic. The more impactful side of the spectrum is considered positive deviance where people stray away from the society’s norms to better themselves or the community. There is also negative deviance which includes crimes such as robbery, rape, and murder. Although sociologists can view something as deviant or non-deviant, the state of the crime is in the judgement of the individual making the decision.
