Last week we discussed police and race relations and you presented your thoughts as well as the facts of some cases. For this discussion:
Pick a case where police used deadly force and present the facts to the class. You may want to review the Continuum of Force Pyramid in Part I – De-Escalation: What Happens Before the Use of ForceLinks to an external site.. You may also search for a case using the B.S. in Criminal Justice Library Guide.
Provide the facts of the case.
State whether you feel that deadly force was justified, and be sure to explain why you feel that way!
Please do not use the George Floyd case. It is a case that almost everyone knows about – I want you to dig a bit deeper and find a case that interests you, maybe one near where you live!
You may add your own thoughts and opinions about the case, but be objective. Check your spelling and grammar!
Watch the video below to help you get started with the discussion:

Hello Everyone,
I strongly believe the classical school of thoughts has the most influence on criminal justice practices, as it encourages free will and reasonable decision making. It promoted the opportunity that peoples should make rational decisions in regard to getting involved in criminal activities or not because they are able to compare the advantages and disadvantages that will result.
Two areas in which the classical school of thoughts has influence the criminal justice practices through law enforcement is by placing great emphasis of deterrence and the certainty of punishment by police being very tactical, responding swiftly to crime and reinforcing the law to dissuade potential offenders have been developed, also maintaining social order and defending individual rights through the impartial and uniform application of the law.
The classical school’s emphasis on deterrence has also contributed to a decrease in crime and recidivism rates by means of promoting prompt and decisive penalties which aims to discourage individuals from engaging in criminal behavior.
In general, the classical school of thought has shaped the foundational principles of criminal justice in both sentencing practices and court systems. These key principles which include: Rational choice and deterrence, punishment as a social contract, legal equality and just deserts and individual responsibility.

Personally, I think that the positivist school of thought has influenced the criminal justice system the most. I say this due to its emphasis on scientific evidence and data in understanding criminal behavior. I think that this approach allows for more objective and effective strategies in crime prevention and rehabilitation. “This school posits that human behavior is determined by forces beyond individual control and that it is possible to measure those forces” (Adler, 2019). Unlike the classical school who views crime as stemming from rational choice, “the positivist school views criminal behavior stemming from biological, psychological, and social factors” (Adler, 2019). All of those things bring me back mentally to my other classes where I learned nature vs nurture and how criminal behavior can stem from both of those.
For example, if you are brought up in a household where there is drugs, and you see your parents or siblings commit crime, you are abused physically, mentally and emotionally, you are more likely to do the same things as an adult because it’s all you know, it’s what you were raised in as opposed to someone who grew up in a loving and caring environment with structure, empathy, communication and understanding. I also think it has a lot to do with who you hang around, which brings in the social factors. If you are hanging around people who are doing crime, you are more likely do commit crime as well. If you hang around people who don’t commit crime and are positive people, then you are more likely to not commit crime and be a good member of society. These are just some examples of why I think that the positivist school of thought has influenced the criminal justice system the most.
The positivist school of thought helps to reduce crime rates by focusing on the root causes of crime, like social factors as well as personal circumstances. This allows for prevention strategies. Another way is through rehabilitation. Positivism believes that people can change, so it promotes treatment and rehab programs to help offenders reintegrate into society, depending on the crime that was committed.

Due by 11:59 PM, Sunday, Jan. 14
Purpose
In this course, you will complete a literature review and mini research project based on your interests. You will then build on your work and apply it to relevant assignments in CRJU 4800 Senior Capstone. The assignments in this course are scaffolded, which means that they build upon each other.
The goal here is to identify topics you will then narrow to your specific topic in the next assignment.
Instructions
For your first assignment, begin researching how the 4th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution affect issues associated with crime, justice, and criminology.
Provide a thorough definition for the 4th Amendment…providing relevant examples.
Provide your interpretation of the 4th Amendment and why it is important to your understanding of issues associated with crime and justice.
Address how you will instigate change in and/or correct those issues you’ve identified. Make sure you focus on policy.
Identify and list 3 potential research topics pertaining to 4th Amendment violations.
Search reliable resources and locate 3 to 5 statistics about each of your 3 topics.
Find 2 direct quotes from sources about each of your 3 potential research topics.

The first step in creating your project is to identify the problem you intend to explore. For this assignment, you will draft your problem and research question. This assignment will be considered as the foundation for your entire project.
In a 2- to 3-page document, respond to the following:
Identify the general problem you have selected for exploration and define it in a statement. For example, the topic on postrelease employment might generate a problem statement such as “Upon release from prison, offenders face severe difficulties securing legitimate employment, which can lead to recidivism or a reliance on public assistance.”
Create at least one research question that focuses on a specific aspect of the problem. This research question will be the question that your research project seeks to answer. For example, a general interest in the rehabilitation of prison inmates might lead to a focused research question such as “Does participation in prison-based technical training programs improve an offender’s opportunities for postrelease employment?” Consider the feedback that you received during the discussion as it may help you refine your general area of interest into an appropriate question that can be examined.
Briefly describe how you would proceed to find an answer to your research question. Is there data already published that can help? Are there programs or policies already in existence that can be analyzed? Does new data need to be collected or a new program implemented? In the prison rehabilitation example, you might find that innovative job-training programs are in place in some prisons, allowing you the opportunity to examine the effectiveness of an existing program.

Review the impact Prepare a brief paper synthesizing federal, state, and local legislation and/or regulations regarding the school safety related points (Unsafe School Option) in No Child Left Behind.
Summarize the review by offering an opinion about “why” our nation moved in the direction required by No Child Left Behind and how “persistently dangerous schools” can be mitigated.
The paper should reflect that you: Reviewed three websites related to “No Child Left Behind” and provide a brief paragraph description of each web site and school safety related points in the federal regulation.
Identified two primary state statutes that relate to school safety issues and persistently dangerous schools as indicated in No Child Left Behind Act.
Refer to your home state for this part of the activity. Reviewed local school board rules regarding safety and security that may have been inspired by issues as indicated in No Child Left Behind. Refer to your home school district for this part of the activity.
You should be able to accomplish this in four pages.
All papers must adhere to the most current Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.
