the readings. Your task is to:
1. summarize the reading in your own words. This summary should be detailed,
comprehensive, and competent. It will demonstrate your understanding of the
reading. The summary will include a restatement of the reading’s central thesis
and supporting arguments in your own words.
2. take a stand on the reading: defend it or refute it. Is the author right or wrong?
Go through the thesis statement and supporting arguments. If you agree with
them, tell me why you agree, not simply that you agree. If you disagree, tell me
why you agree, not simply that you disagree.
3. whether you think the author is right or wrong, support your arguments with
external examples to illustrate your points. The external examples should not be

How is the cultural landscape of London is Affected by Artisanal Tea Shops

Research report
You will compile a report about a specific aspect of London culture to rationally justify your prediction
for how this selected topic will evolve to influence attitudes and behavior in London in three years time.
As your research journal continues to build into a personal resource of London focused observations
you will be required to reflect upon this material to stimulate further independent research. You will be
required to set yourself a research question based on your personal relationship with London. This
chosen topic must reference an aspect of London’s commercial, creative, economic or social culture
that you have an affinity with in some way. Through gathering information about the past and what is
happening now you will evolve an argument that will conclude with a prediction about London in three
years time.
Below is the topic and information about my research report:
Topic: How is the cultural landscape of London is Affected by Artisanal Tea Shops
My research report will mainly talk about:
How have the abundance of artisanal tea shops affected social interactions in London?
(ex. what role does a tea shop play in the city and how do they operate to attract customers)
What do the tea shops aim to offer to their customers?
And what effects can we expect them to have on the city’s cultural structure in three years?
(ex. Teahouses are not only places where tea is served, but also places for social interaction and cultural exchanges.)This is a potentially propositional if not provocative task. Abstract and non linear approaches can be
very impactful. Justification of final opinion through evolved evaluation of substantial research is key.
Format: A 2000 word report illustrated with appropriate visuals (Harvard Style)

Compare and contrast Hedda Gabler and Rockaby. First, write about the plays in their historical and cultural context – what literary or artistic movements each play reflects. Then describe the similarities and dissimilarities between the styles of language in each play (dialogues, syntax, punctuation, tone, etc.). Lastly, explain how these uses of language create types of thoughts and emotions for spectators. Note: Be specific about scenes and acts when describing and citing.
Writing Protocols: Submit in WORD.docx form, (no PDFs.) Format is double-spaced, 12 font, Times New Roman, all 1-inch margins, page numbers, first page with title and your name, no cover page.

The idea is very simple: pick a case study pertaining to the culture wars. Then, analyze
the case study through a scholarly lens. The point is to educate the class about some
interesting facet of the culture wars.
RESEARCH PROPOSAL COMPONENTS:
1st Section: Introduce your case study
– Begin your proposal by describing a concrete case study that you wish to
write about. The case study must illustrate some facet of the culture wars. It
can be gleaned from a news story, a magazine article, a book, a media
campaign (political, commercial, social), or perhaps any combination of
these. It must be some clearly identifiable culture wars phenomenon suitable
for serious scholarly study.
2nd Section: Spell out your research problem
– This is the most important part of the project. It consists of a three-step
formula: topic, question, and significance. You will need to 1) make your
topic explicit, 2) pose a research question about that topic, and 3) state what
difference your project will make either to understanding or to practice.
• EXAMPLE: 1) I am conducting a study of the Trump Administration’s
child separation policy because 2) I want to determine if it constitutes
a case of political trolling 3) in order to inform social media scholars
of the corrosive effects of the culture wars on the practice of
democracy.
– NOTE: Coming up with a good question is the most challenging part of a
serious research paper. Always observe the following rules when formulating your question:
• Do not ask a question with an obvious answer.
• Ask “yes” or “no” question. Do not ask a “why,” “what,” or “how” question.
• Ask an empirical question about what is or is not the case, not a
moral question about what should or should not be the case.Once you’ve spelled out your research problem, state your hypothesis.
For this, you will simply turn your question into either an affirmative or negative statement.
EXAMPLE: “My hypothesis is that the Trump Administration’s child
separation policy does indeed constitute a case of political trolling.”
– Who is your ideal target audience and why? Why should they care? What
might they hope to benefit from your research? Note: Your audience can’t be
“society.” It’s important to be specific.
3rd Section: Recommendations
– State potential recommendations or lessons learned, depending on possible
outcome(s) of your research. If the answer to your hypothesis is “yes,” then
what are the practical implications? If the answer is “no,” then what are the
practical implications?
4th Section: Annotated Bibliography
– Minimum of 8 sources (at least 5 scholarly)
– CITATION STYLE: APA
FORMATTING: 12 point, Times New Roman, double-spaced
LENGTH: This should be a minimum of 4 pages.
