The introduction: the fundamentals of the films

So, the subjects I want to introduce you to are considered to be famous psychological films. I would like to discuss such productions as A Beautiful Mind and Black Swan. The most noticeable feature, which combines two films, is that both characters suffer from psychological disorders.

First of all, I would like to share some fundamentals of films. My first choice is an American drama film based on a true story. The plot discloses the hard life of a Nobel Laureate in Economics John Nash. The main character suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. My second choice is the film, Black Swan. The main character Nina Sayers suffers from a double personality.

Generally, it seems that, on the one hand, the productions have nothing in common. However, it is only the first impression.

The thesis statement

The issues, which are to be analyzed, are considered to be of the same nature. However, the consequences of psychological disorders depend upon the choices people make. Both films reflect the different origins of a similar problem. A persons inward nature is to be discussed.

The body: a comparative and contrastive analysis

I have already pointed out that both characters in the films suffer from psychological diseases. However, I would like to clarify that the reasons that caused the disorders are not the same. To understand better what I am talking about, lets draw a parallel between two different personalities. The first character John Nash from A Beautiful Mind, suffers from a mental disorder, which is called schizophrenia. He experiences the most widespread symptoms of the disease, including hallucinations, emotional difficulties, and hearing voices. He is a prodigy. The second character from the film Black Swan is Nina Sayers, who is to perform two roles in Tchaikovskys Swan Lake.

She is to dance the part of Black Swan as well as the part of Swan Queen. The roles the main character is to perform are different. Black Swan symbolizes cruelty and evil, while Swan Queen represents innocence. In real life, Nina Sayers is supposed to serve only good things. However, to receive the role of a prima ballerina, she starts to fight with her inward nature. Finally, such non-acceptance of her inner core leads to horrible consequences. Nina starts to experience obsessive-compulsive disorder and visual hallucinations. She begins to destruct her character and mind.

So, taking into account the above-mentioned details, one can make a conclusion that the principal difference between the psychological states of the two characters is that the origin or nature of the diseases is different. In our case, it can be divided into genetic and the environment. Thus, John Nashs case is recognized to be hereditary, while Nina Sayerss situation totally depends upon environmental conditions.

For instance, the supposition can be proved by the fact that environmental conditions, which cause schizophrenia, are related to drug use, poor housing conditions, racial discrimination, etc. However, I have to notice that the main character didnt experience the above-mentioned events. For this reason, environmental effects are to be excluded. The genetic nature of John Nashs disease can be confirmed by the fact that his son also suffers from schizophrenia (in real life).

In my opinion, Nina Sayerss situation is obvious. The girls desire to become the first became fatal for her. When a person tries to do his or her best to achieve good results, the consequences can be pleasant; however, an abnormal desire to win can lead to the most terrible results. For the second character, the proverb that the end justifies the means is considered to be a motto of life. By the way, this observation gives me an opportunity to state that still both characters were too proud. Thus, according to the first film, John Nash suffered superiority complex or macromania, while Nina Sayers was too selfish. For her, the loss meant purposelessness and was the sign of a misfit.

The conclusion: the importance of the choice

Generally, both films are considered to be rather significant. The first film, A Beautiful Mind, shows us that genetic causes of some diseases are difficult to avoid; however, a healthy persons will and desire to fight against unpleasant conditions can help to overcome any difficulties. On the other hand, the second film proves that a human being is an imperfect creature, unfortunately. In other words, the personality includes numerous subpersonalities, and it depends upon a person what character (good or bad) will finally win.

It seems that the case with John Nash is to be more difficult, as it is tough to fight with a human beings inherent nature. However, Black Swan showed that sometimes there are external factors, which are difficult to overcome.

To my mind, both cases depicted in the films show that the process of recovery depends upon the persons desire to fight with conditions he or she lives in. On a large scale, it doesnt matter genetic or environmental causes lead to negative consequences. It is a persons choice, which determines the success of his or her fight.

John Nash is the protagonist in the movie, A Beautiful Mind. In the film, Nash is a male character of an unknown age. He is a graduate mathematician from the Princeton University. Throughout the movie, he works for different institutions including the MIT, Princeton University, and the Pentagon.

John Nash suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. According to Munro (2006), paranoid schizophrenia is a subtype of schizophrenia in which the patient has delusions (false beliefs) that a person or some individuals are plotting against them or members of their family (77). John Nash fits this description. First, he believes that someone has been following him as he makes his way to a mailbox. In another instance at the Harvard University where he is delivering a key speech, he is forced to leave hastily after allegedly seeing some familiar USSR operatives in the crowd (Capps, 2003). Additionally, the majority of the characters that Nash interacts with throughout the movie are creations of his mind.

His roomie, Charles, does not exist in reality, but only in Nashs troubled mind. In addition, people suffering from paranoid schizophrenia are introverts in most cases, and thus they do not fit in the conventional social framework. From the beginning, Nash lives in seclusion as a student at Princeton University. As a lecturer at MIT, he cannot relate to have been found in the students, and thus he quits his job based on the allegation that the learners are boring. Moreover, his marriage breaks up due to his inability to socialize with his wife, Alicia.

According to Hengeson (2012), some health conditions are common amongst individuals of one gender. However, Versola-Russo (2006) posits that no gender differences have been found in the prevalence of schizophrenia in epidemiological studies; however, it seems that onset is earlier in men as compared to women (p. 84). Therefore, it suffices to conclude that there is no difference in the prevalence of the condition between males and females.

The movie did a good job of depicting the disorder in John Nash. The character shows all the major symptoms of paranoid schizophrenia. According to Frith and Johnstone (2003), the key characteristics of this disorder include emotional disconnectedness, severe anxiety, argumentative behavior, violent tendencies, and delusions of grandeur (p. 103). In the movie, Nash highlights most of these symptoms. For instance, at the Harvard University, he turns violent and punches Dr. Rosen in the face as he tries to flee from imaginary USSR operatives.

He also argues a lot with his wife. He portrays delusions of grandeur by imagining that he has been hired by the Department of Defense to decrypt communication codes used by the USSR spies. He also imagines that he is very important to the level of stopping a nuclear bomb. Therefore, based on these findings, it suffices to conclude that the movies did exceptional work in presenting the disorder.

Movies can negatively affect the peoples feelings about psychological disorders. For instance, the movie, A Beautiful Mind, portrays John Nash as an extremely dangerous and antisocial person. Based on the depiction of John Nash in the movie, most viewers will conclude that he is a crazy person or a mad man. Such perceptions are damaging, and viewers end up getting the wrong picture of such conditions. Unfortunately, a study by Orchowski, Spickard, and McNamara (2006) indicated that most people learn of psychological disorders from movies. Therefore, it suffices to conclude that most people have the wrong feelings about psychological disorders.

Nurses mainly focus on bridging the gap between systems of health care and patients. They have the skills and knowledge of cultural issues that help them act as mediators of change. They usually aim at increasing mental and healthcare capacity programs. This enables them to competently implement, design, and evaluate services to the delivery systems (Zanuck, & Goulding, 1946).

In nursing, culture has emerged as an approach to ethnic and social disparity elimination. The nurses work in conjunction with the informal supports and help out other sectors in diverse communities (Canadian Nurses Association, 1997).

In the film Half the Sky, nurses should ensure that neglected children get the parental care they need. These can be achieved by supporting these children. Nurses should endeavor to positively influence the lives of these children. Using their skills, nurses can have some profound influence on the childrens lives (Zanuck, & Goulding, 1946).

Open communication and a close relationship with children can help keep them at peace. This enables the children to share out honest feelings about what they feel in a particular situation. By supporting children and appreciating them, nurses will help them develop confidence and self-respect (Zanuck, & Goulding, 1946).

Another appropriate nursing intervention is giving out information to the young ones. Children need to be aware of education because it gives them the ability to cope in difficult and challenging situations. However, for it to be productive, this information should be specific and clear. The information may include; how the environment operates equipment, the childs condition, and the performed interventions. They also need to be provided with practical methods so as to ensure they understand and be able to apply the acquired knowledge (Canadian Nurses Association, 1997).

The film the Childs Bride, brings out a sad impression. Marriage ceremonies are usually carried out at night. The ceremonies are done during the hot months before the start of the rains, a time that the Rajasthans consider excellent for weddings. These weddings are usually illegal, and that is why the most preferred time is at night (Friedgen & Revier, 1938).

Children are usually snatched away from their parents at a tender age and forced into marriages. They are married off at an early age of between 13  15 years (Zanuck, & Goulding, 1946). The perpetrators argue that parents should choose love mates for their children. Children are not allowed to choose the partners they would wish to have for themselves. Since the marriages are not anchored on love, some parts of India regard this as a foolish idea.

The nurses code of ethics is meant to be a guide for conducting the responsibilities of nurses. This brought about the issue of quality care and ethical considerations in the nursing profession. The ICN provides actions based on social needs and values. Since it was adopted, the code has served across all the nursing professions worldwide. It helps the nurses to make the right choices and helps them not to participate in activities that are not directed towards healing and caring (Canadian Nurses Association, 1997).

The ANA code requires that every nurse upholds with dignity the code of ethics. It usually considers the members as an upper hand in developing resources. Members are chosen to a group after which they carry out research on an issue and write a report. The issue report is then approved by the ANA. When approved, the report makes the standards of the nurses and represents the nurses across the world (Canadian Nurses Association, 1997).

The film Hog Wild is a story of a married couple and both difficulties and benefits of their relationship. I sympathize with Hardy more because it appears that he is having significant issues in his relationship with Laurel. In one scene depicted in the movie, he is unable to find his hat because of memory loss issues, despite it being on his head. His wife, however, does not offer assistance, which urges him to ask for help from a servant. Subsequently, he feels humiliated and uncomfortable, although the problem with the hat is not substantial. This scene at the beginning shows the regular communication between the two, where Laurel does not give solace to Hardy.

In addition, despite this treatment, Hardy chooses to hang the radio instead of running his errands and continues to try and accomplish the task despite falling into the pool several times. These scenes also evoke sympathy, especially when Laurel tells him to stop playing. It appears that this is the usual attitude in their relationship, which lacks encouragement or support. Hardy continues to pursue his attempts regardless of this comment, displaying his commitment. However, both depicted individuals mistreat each other, since Hardy looks annoyed at the beginning of the film.

It should be noted that their relationship makes them more than the sum of their parts. This aspect becomes evident at the end of the movie when Laurel rushes to help Hardy move the car, indicating her compassion. Similarly, the attempts of her husband to install the radio on the roof were a struggle; nevertheless, he did not quit.

Overall, Hardy has a rougher end of the relationship when compared to Laurel.

For a long time now, going to the cinema has always been an exciting adventure. When most people think of a nice place to relax and enjoy time with friends and family, they mostly think of going to a movie theater. In general, a movie can be an impeccable way of spending leisure time, which is particularly true if there is not much action to take part in where people live. In regards to watching films, not many people seem to agree that cinema is the ideal place. Some people believe that sitting in the comfort of their home while watching movies is a better choice than visiting film houses. In this essay, one will be enlightened why watching movies at home is better than going to the movie theater

It Saves Money

By watching movie at home, one will save a fair amount of money. In todays society, money is everything, and people improvise different ways of acquiring, or saving it. Going to the movies might sound like a simple act of fun, but in reality, one ends up spending a lot of money. The cost of paying for tickets tends to grow annually as people visit cinemas. For someone to take his or her family and loved ones to pass time in theaters might be quite expensive. It is because, apart from entrance fees, other expenses which may be incurred are car fuel, parking charges, buying of snacks, plus other hidden additional costs (Meyer 46). When comparing it to watching a movie at home on ones television, or doing video streaming on iTunes and Netflix, the video streaming option is by far way much cheaper.

Nevertheless, there are some minor drawbacks about watching movies at home. The first one is that the latest and highest-ranked movie releases get to the film and theaters first. It usually takes a long time before they extent to peoples homes. Second, at the cinemas, the quality of the film is of a higher quality and it is supplemented by the surrounding effects. Despite that, streaming at home remains the best option because one will save money, which can be utilized in catering to other family affairs and development.

It Guarantees Comfort

Streaming movies at the comfort of ones home gives the kind of comfort which cannot be found anywhere else, not even in a movie house. Almost everyone hates the front rows in cinemas, where they have to stretch their necks for a better view. Continuous straining can damage ones neck after three or so hours of watching the favorite show. None of these issues will ever occur when people stay at the luxury of their own homes to watch movies. In the house, someone sits comfortably in their couch, wraps himself up in blankets, and watches all day long. It also means one has the freedom to choose the type of film they would like to watch and when to watch it (Gil and Gutierrez-Navratil 740). At home, the movie lover is at liberty to pause, eat anything the way they like or move around to attend to other matters without worrying about annoying or distracting anyone.

It is Safe

The safest place one can watch a movie is their home. Whenever people are in public, they have to share practically everything with everyone else. There are those individuals who might be annoying, particularly in the film houses, where rather than maintaining silence, there are those who cannot stop talking or speaking on their phones. Such actions can keep ones attention away if he or she is the person who finds it difficult to focus on presence. Nevertheless, not everyone who goes to movies has good intentions. It means that one has to be careful and aware of his or her surroundings at all times. It is because issues such as people losing their personal belongings, for example, phones are widespread in movie halls (Peterson 452). A more recent risk which has made going to movies a personal risk is the Covid-19 pandemic. People are advised to keep social distance due to the rapid spread of the disease. To avoid the risk of exposing themselves to the virus, a significant number of movie lovers have resorted to watching at home. Clearly, staying at home and watching ones favorite movie will keep you safe from undesired incidents.

Opposing Opinion

Some opposing opinions claim that going to the cinema helps one to watch the movie with more clarity on a large screen. It also offers surround-sound which enhances ones overall experience. However, home technology has undergone much development, and people now have high definition (HD) televisions. They also have excellent sound equipment, as well as remote monitoring gadgets. With all of these, it does not make a logical difference to seek theatrical experience in a public theatre.

Conclusion

All these explanations are a clear proof of how one might well be better off relaxed in the comfort of their home to enjoy the movie experience with more flexibility. Instead of going to the cinema, one should buy their favorite classic films and spend time with their families in the luxury of their homes. Watching movies is considered to be one of the best forms of entertainment. It only makes it better if one has the power over what, how and when to watch it. Furthermore, with advanced technology having reached peoples homes, many prefer to watch movies in their houses.

Introduction

Environment refers to the sum total of the conditions that surround people and other living organisms. The thriving or survival of many organisms, including human beings, depends on the conditions of the environment. A poorly conserved environment presents great hazards to its inhabitants. However, if well conserved, environment gives invaluable benefits to those it supports.

The energy crisis that the world is currently facing is due to the pollution, over exploitation and depletion of natural resources; therefore, there is an urgent need for the concerned parties and organizations all over the world to endeavour to conserve the environment to ensure its sustainability. This essay focuses on efforts that the Crude Oil film and Week Three Tapped movie apply to sensitize the population about environmental conservation.

The Crude Oil Film

Summary

Directed by Wang Bing, the Crude Oil movie is a documentary whose main theme revolves around the need to conserve the environment. To conserve the environment, the documentary advocates for the urgent need to prevent pollution of the environmental resources.

In particular, the movie focuses on pollution that most companies and renowned corporations cause in quest for energy. It gives the Ecuadonian Amazon (rainforest Chernobil) as one of the natural resources that large organizations have destroyed in the pursuit for energy.

It seeks to inform such companies and organizations of the dangers of using crude oil as energy sources without coming up with measures aimed at preventing pollution to the natural oil resources. Through this movie, Wang Bing argues that if the current trend continues for a considerably long period, then a major crisis is inevitable.

The environment will not be habitable, which will make life and living unbearable. Therefore, those who are sensitive towards the environment should not only make direct efforts to conserve it, but also sensitize the rest of the world about the need to conserve it.

Opinion

I vehemently agree with what Wang Bing is trying to put across through his documentary. It does not require much conviction for one to realize that the modern society faces a major crisis emanating from the wanton depletion of natural resources for short-term benefits such as production of energy.

With time, more and more industries are emerging and the population exhibits an ever-increasing trend; consequently, people continue to destroy natural resources like crude oil resources to meet their energy requirements. Therefore, the natural resources are becoming insufficient and the situation worsens by the day.

In order to avoid the looming environmental crisis, individuals and organization have to observe strict measures during the use of natural resources to prevent pollution and unnecessary depletion. Besides, there should also be efforts to use alternative sources of energy to avoid overdependence on crude oil whose exploitation leads to environmental destruction.

In addition, governments should protect natural resources like the Ecuadonian Amazon by imposing strict guidelines on companies using coal products as their sources of energy. As a result, the environment and its resources would be able to sustain the needs of the current generation and generations to come.

Week 3 Tapped

Summary

The director of the movie, Week 3 Tapped, seeks to sensitize the world about the harmful effects of using crude oil and its products as the main source of energy. The movie also awakens the audience about the potential harm that bottled water has on human health. It focuses on companies for example Nestle and Coca-Cola that obtain water on a free basis and sell it to people after cleaning it.

Clean water forms only 1% of the earths surface but due to the exploitation of crude oil resources, some of the harmful substances contained in the crude oil find their way to water resources. PET, for example refers to a chemical substance called parazyline from crude oil and this chemical normally finds its way to water products such as coke, dasani and nestle.

In addition, PET contaminates air, soil and underground water. Therefore, the director of this movie suggests that the exploitation of crude oil results in contamination of natural water resources, which is a constituent of many consumable liquid products.

The director further reveals that the immediate effects of these chemicals on the human body are minute and initially unnoticeable; however, these minute amounts accumulate and harm the body after considerable period. Therefore, it is important that governments be aware of the potential effects that the exploitation of crude oil has on human health.

Oil has become a necessity for most activities ranging from car construction to industrial production. Oil has even attracted wars, for example, the Iraq hinges on the desire by nations to control oil reserves as a means of gaining power. People around the world therefore need to halt the exploitation of oil resources and adapt alternative energy sources.

Opinion

I concur with the message that the director of this movie sends to the audience. First, it is worthy to note that indeed, oil as a source of energy has forced nations to scramble for power.

America, for example, has in the past tried to control the oil rich Iraq, which ended up in war. The Bush administration fostered good relations with oil companies to control this rare resource. If things stay unchanged, then a major global crisis is imminent. The demand for oil will escalate to supersede the supply and the world will plunge into uncalled crisis.

Consequently, prices for the little available oil will shoot up making it affordable for only the rich people in the society. The future generation will suffer greatly since an energy crisis usually affects all sectors of the economy. People will not be able to afford basic commodities and industries that depend on oil as the main source of energy for example air transport will stall resulting into a global crisis. Indeed, there is need to seek alternative sources of energy other than oil.

Conclusion

The use of crude oil as a source of energy has become a common practice in the modern world. The reason behind this trend is population increase and emergence of many industries. Overdependence on crude oil as a source of energy has led to energy crisis due to high demand and limited supply.

The exploitation of this energy resource has also led to the degradation of the environment. Some harmful chemicals present in crude oil find their way to consumable resources like water. Unfortunately, such chemicals are known to affect the health of the human beings negatively.

If nations continue depleting crude oil resources for energy production, then a global energy crisis is imminent. Therefore, there is a dire need to sensitize governments to put stern measures that either restrict exploitation of oil reserves, or ensure that people take important measures that seek to conserve the environment and protect human health.

Different mental states depicted in the film

The film Ordinary People clearly depicts how people can react differently in the same situation, thereby, activate different mental states based on their reactions. As to Conrads diagnosis, he showed symptoms of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Conrads mother, Beth, showcases characteristics of a narcissist (Brooks et al., 2018). She refuses to talk about the death of her son. She attempts to ignore the hurt she is feeling and this makes her grieve process longer.

Additionally, the fact that she does not care for her other child confirm her narcissistic behavior. She forces Conrad to participate in normal activities despite the fact that he (Conrad) does not want to as the said activities remind him of his brother. Indeed, one can argue that Conrads mother (Beth) is rigid due to the fact that she refuses to change her lifestyle. Agreeably, this is one way of dealing with loss, where the affected person wants things to remain the same in order to avoid more change in their daily routine. It can also be argued that it is for this same reason that Beth does not want to talk about her loss. Whereas this might seem like arrogance, it is a psychological way of dealing with loss. Whether it is effective or not is a different aspect all together.

Stigma associated with mental health

The different characters in the film all go through the different types of stigma. First, Conrad is referred to as a crazy person. This labeling is based on the fact that Conrad had suicidal thoughts and kept to himself. Unlike his mother, however, Conrad avoided activities he used to do with his brother. Indeed, this is another way of dealing with loss. Change in a daily routine helped Conrad avoid triggers that reminded him of his brother. One can then argue that both Conrad and his mother suffer from some form of post-traumatic stress disorder. The additional fact that Beth (Conrads mother) also suffered from persistent complex bereavement disorder is also valid. She refuses to address the death of her oldest son, and by doing so, takes more time to grieve.

The impact of social events on mental health

Different relationships can help manage mental health conditions. In the case of Conrad, his relationship with his mother is particularly strained after the death of his brother. The fact that Conrad perceived his brother as his mothers favorite child also affects how he relates to his mother, and deals with his brothers death. As the film progresses, Conrad is able to heal and move on. He accepts the help of a therapist who then guides him on how to best come to terms with his brothers death.

This proves that mental health issues can be managed properly if the right medical help is sought (De Vries, Roest, Burgerhof, & de Jonge, 2018). Additionally, strong social support systems are critical in dealing with mental heal concerns. This is proven by the fact that Conrads mother indifference made it that much harder for him to deal with the loss.

It has never been an easy task for mankind to develop patience in whatever they are doing. Most of the things we undertake demands for long time patience and perseverance. In many cases, we look for means to gratify our needs with ease and as fast as possible. This eventually overwhelms us and drains all our resources leading to development of anxiety. To develop patience, one need to nurture positive attitude towards all that we do. Perform an analysis of issues that makes you not to be patient.This would help one in coming up with methods of overcoming the root cause of ones impatience. Good things take time to achieve and call for patience. Some of the virtues of patience include success, protection and wisdom.

Success comes hand in hand with patience. It is the ability to tolerate waiting or delay. Being patient helps one become calm even in the event of adversarial circumstances. Andy is aware of his sole intention of getting out of the cell. To succeed, he needs to be patient. He understands the punishment that he might subject himself to by advising Hadley on how to avert paying tax but he goes on to do it. Andy never makes haste in planning his escape from the cell. His patience earns him a reputation in the cell where he is consulted by guards on accounting problems. This helps him create good relationship with all in the cell making it hard for them to suspect him of having mischievous intentions. His willingness to be manipulated by prison wardens eventually earns him an opportunity to escape from the prison which had been his main intention since he set his foot in the prison. As a result of his patience, he manages not only to dig a tunnel in his room that helps him escape from the prison but is also able to gather enough information about Norton that helps him withdraw all his money from the bank. He manages also to make away with books he had kept for Norton. His dream of living in Zihuatanejo, a Mexican-pacific coastal town is eventually achieved (Edberg Par. 2).

Patience leads to protection. If one develops patience, it is possible for him or her to overcome hardships that might be brought by ones failures or wrong actions. One is able to overcome emotions that might result from his or her past actions. It helps one understand that by focusing on the future and forgetting about the past, it is possible for one to absolutely change his or her past way of life. Andys patience earns him protection from being molested in the prison. Despite having been convicted for killing his wife and her lover, this action does not deter him from pursuing his goals. It is his wish to once live in Zihuatanejo and this strong desire helps him forget of his past events. He even manages to forget the fact that he has been sentenced to life imprisonment and it is hard for him to leave the prison. He manages to dig the tunnel for twenty years without the knowledge of his fellow prisoners who could have informed the wardens thwarting his efforts (Edberg Par. 4).

Patience and determination helps one focus on his or her goals. This helps in achieving success of all that one sets to achieve. Showing patient to others leads to them developing trust on you thus sharing ideas that might be vital in achieving ones goals.

Inasmuch as people claim to be righteous, their deeds do not always concur with the claim. They always exhibit a destructive element, whose power overcomes that of the element of love. This holds true for every person, ranging from honorable to the most innocent. Frank Darabonts The Green Mile is a must-watch chef-doeuvre revealing the mischief that people continue to wreak to their fellow others. The results of the interaction of the prisoners and the guards are the epitome of what happens on the ground. Worth learning is the lesson that, every person, whether just or unjust, seeks to destroy another to some extend. For instance, virtually all prisoner guards would rather have the prisoners suffer than help them through their trials as their job entails.

Wetmore represents the guards who would rather kill than assist the prisoners while Edgecomb takes after those who rise to the fullness of their duties, but they too, have their own issues. This category, regardless of the crime committed by the prisoners, ensures that they get the right treatment, come their day of persecution, a job perfectly done. However, the likes of Wetmore do the reverse. For instance, while Edgecomb refers to his job place as an intensive care ward, Wetmore declares it a rat drowning place where drowning of rats symbolizes his destructive attitude towards the prisoners. There is also another category of people, who suffer unjustly like Coffey though they too are harmful. They are likened to Jesus whom people killed when innocently; however, they cannot forgive completely as Jesus did. In fact, Ram observes, &a key portion of the plot involves him (Coffey) getting his revenge (p.4). The parents of the two girls, killed by Coffey as news claims, plan to get rid of Coffeys life as he did to their kids. The likes of Edgecomb too are not an exception, despite their noble roles in society. They too reveal some evil actions they have done against people. Therefore, building on these illustrations, the viewer realizes that all people, regardless of their status, whether just or unjust possess a unique destructive trait. In fact, Woodard calls it &the evil that can and does possess anyone (p.23). In conclusion, people have ethical responsibilities as human beings.

Conclusion

There stand some responsibilities, naturally bestowed upon human beings, which define what is and what is not worth doing without regard to what the physical laws say. For instance, it is peoples responsibility to save, rather than to harm their fellow other people. However, there are jobs specifically for people trained to kill others, like Edgecombs. The author, through this character, wants the likes of Edgecomb to see the possibility of standing by their ethical rather than their jobs dictations. Edgecomb chooses to help, but not to harm the prisoners. If I had eternal life, I would stand by the truth, as revealed by God and not men. By so doing I will have peace, not only of the body but also of mind concurring with Woodards words If you have nothing to hide, you have peace inside (p.26). Although miracles are good in the sense that they can bring healing, peace, lengthen life as well as give financial freedom, quoting a few, we should not believe in them. The deception behind virtually all miracle doers is inexplicable. When Jesus addressed the issue of deception in the end-time, he pointed the existence of false miracles and warned people not to believe in them and since he is our standard, we ought not to believe in miracles following the deception therein. The criterion used by Darabont to present these issues passes his for an informative piece of work.

Depression is a prolonged slowdown in the economic activities of one or more world economies. It is characterized by mass unemployment, reduction in per-capita GDP, decrease in consumer demand, and reduction in general supply of commodities. Price deflation coupled with rampant bankruptcies reduces the return to production and limits capital available for investment. Though mostly as a result of a crush in one sector of the economy, depression adversely affects close to all other economic organs. The movie industry also finds itself hit by this economic typhoon, as it mostly depends on extra spending from citizens, who must meet their basic needs first.

From the early 1920s, the movie industry was gaining strength, and there was a mass capital injection into the industry. There was a division of labor as direction, production, and distribution were assigned to different individuals who specialized in these areas. The number of films produced per year steadily increased, as new ideas were being incorporated into the movie industry (Antonowicz par.1). Profits on the other hand were substantial and most of the firms in this line of business were breaking even with huge margins. Generally, the going was smooth and the industry was flourishing as demand increased beyond expectation.

The depression hit hard on the whole economy and Hollywood found itself in this economic crunch (Dirks par. 2). There was a decrease in demand for films, as most people cut short on their luxurious spending to ensure they took care of their pressing requirements. The cinema halls were for a better part of the day, either empty or had half their capacity, given that many people chose to work overtime or take part-time jobs to augment their income. People were also not sure of job security, they, therefore, chose to save in case they lost their jobs, as there were job cuts in every section of the economy in a move to reduce costs. Profits started shrinking while income was declining, yet production was taking place, prompting the need to re-arrange the industry to save it from adverse repercussions of the market crash.

Production of the films was able, however, to go on without much disturbance during this period. Incidentally, the industry had set up systems that were strong enough, to at least cushion it against dire consequences of the depression. The contracts with the actors of the movies were signed in the early 1920s and were to run for very long periods, this helped in the removal of the necessity of contracting during the depression, a move that would have necessitated increases in payments. Additionally, the industry integrated direction, production, and distribution of films to reduce costs incurred in production, hence increasing their profits. To increase the number of collections from theaters, it was important for customer incentive methods to be implemented. Hollywood introduced ruffle tickets, where clients won cash prices or other presents if they went to the movies. The plan worked perfectly for them as customers came streaming to cinema halls. To moviegoers, it was a way of making extra cash to alleviate the economic predicament prevailing at that time. There were mergers in the movie industry which strengthened the capital base of the production companies, making them able to sail through the depression. In Hollywood for instance, the Wagner Brothers merged with The First National, and this gave them a boost to increase the production per year.

The theaters also provided a good haven, for those who wanted to know how the wealthy people were reacting to the economic turmoil, hence contributing to the increased number of moviegoers. The depression in turn formed a very interesting and captivating theme, which the studios capitalized on by producing films highlighting the effects of depression. A Class conflict that was prevalent in the society at the time, was well addressed in the movies in a comical way, where the affluent and middle class mingled in the cinema halls freely encouraging more people to attend (Dirks par.6). In the movie theaters also people momentarily forgot about their economical problems. For a moment they were happy and oblivious of what the depression had done to them, they chose to spend as much time as possible in cinema halls.

Ironically, while the other sectors of the economy were struggling under the depression, the movie industry was at its best, producing at what would turn out to be the highest rate in history. All the factors highlighted above, coupled with the fact that the movie industry was flourishing from the early 1920s, increased the income of studios and their profits. There was a lot of technological improvement in the content and method of production; silent movies though predominant were slowly being replaced by action and horror movies. Production was done in several stages which were handled by specialists to improve the quality of the films, the length of the films also increased tremendously. Movie making became a lucrative business, prompting the injection of a lot of capital into the industry and an increase in the number of studios that produced films (Antonwicz par.3). Theaters were being renovated to include recent state of art equipment and furniture, making them more luxurious joints of entertainment, and more attractive to the high-class people in the society.

The producers in the 1920s also had the self-regulatory mechanism of decorum, which determined what ought to be screened and what was not to be aired. Instead of waiting for the state to determine and set the rules on movie content, the producers chose to take it upon themselves by restricting their production. It was believed that movies could have dire implications on the moral standards of society, and could also influence behavioral change on the youth who would want to copy what the actors do on screen. This included all scenes that involved sexual acts, use of force, and other events which were perceived to hurt society. The industry was also divided into different categories according to class, and the content of production was also made by this stratification. There were the high-class studios that produced relatively expensive material for the wealthy people of the society, where most famous stars of Hollywood featured. Another category, for instance, those found in the shabby areas of Hollywood, produced cheap films using less costly inputs and featured the upcoming stars in the movie industry. It is from this category that most of the horrors and thrillers came from since the self-regulatory principles were less applied.

The movie industry witnessed most of its upstream development in the 1920s; it had investors who injected a lot of cash, giving the industry a strong economic base that acted as a cushion during the depression. The industry also applied tactics that enabled it to sail through the depression while gaining in terms of income. Actually, during the depression when most of the industries were failing, the movie industry was at its peak producing the highest number of films per year than any decade since then. The financial system that was employed in the early 1920s, and the management processes were very prudent. The technological improvement that took place during the period also made colossal contributions to the industry; morals were upheld, while every member of the society had a film of his or her choice.
