1. Mario has experienced damage to his facial nerve. How would this affect his special senses?
2. The shift nurse brings ailing eighty-year-old Gertrude her dinner. As Gertrude eats a small amount of her food, she comments that she isn’t hungry and that “hospital food just doesn’t taste good!” The nurse gives Gertrude a menu so she can choose her morning breakfast. Gertrude complains that she is having trouble reading the menu and asks the nurse to read it to her. As the nurse begins to read, Gertrude loudly asks her to “speak up and turn off the buzzing.” What does the nurse know about aging and the special senses that help to explain Gertrude’s comments?
3. As you help your neighbor put drops in her six-year-old daughter’s eyes, the daughter states, “That medicine tastes bad.” How do you explain to the neighbor how her daughter can “taste” the eyedrops?

4. The question is if the size of ponds and the shade cover of ponds influenced whether duckweed would be able to grow in a pond or not. To address this we compared the estimated size of ponds with and without duckweed and the estimated shade coverage of ponds with and without duckweed. We found evidence for the role of shade but not pond size. We also found that shade and size are not necessarily correlated.
5. for the results when writing the paper down below is a document with all the information.
6. When you’re citing literature, (1) make sure that you are citing literature that is relevant to our study. Just because a study involved duckweed, doesn’t not mean it is worth citing. I would prefer that you cite a study about different species that are influenced by shade and pond size than a study about duckweed that isn’t directly relevant. (2) Make sure you understand what the other studies found
7. To improve your discussion for the revisions, you’ll need to have a paragraph that correctly summarizes your findings and whether they met your predictions. You’ll also need to write a paragraph about why you feel that ponds that are shadier tended to have more duckweed and why you feel that pond size did not have an influence. Then you’ll want to connect this to other literature in a meaningful way. Finally, end with why our results matter (can they inform how to best grow/protect duckweed?)

For this lab #2 Assignment you will be generating a Word or pdf document. You all should have your cell phone microscopes by now and using them should help you complete this assignment. If you did not receive the cell phone microscope you can still find these organisms.
There are 13 major eukaryotic phyla/ groups listed below. You can have up to two pictures of Arthropoda and Chordata. This means you can make two observations within these particular groups. This assignment is designed to help make you think, as well as encourage you to explore the world around you. To receive full credit on this project you will need to take at least 10 pictures of the phyla listed below.
The list of phyla/ groups are as follows: Cnidaria, Echinodermata, Platyhelminthes, Rotifera, Mollusca, Annelida, Nematoda, Arthropoda, Chordata, Byrophyta, Ferns, Gymnosperms, and Angiosperms.
After you take your pictures, copy each one onto a single word file, clearly label each picture to include the type of organism and the phylum or group in which it is placed, and upload the document in the dropbox provided. If you have a smart phone the iNaturalist app is awesome for identifications. View this like a taxonomic ‘egg hunt’.
I will assess each submission according to the following criteria:
>10 pictures = 100%
9 pictures = 90%
8 pictures = 80%
7 pictures = 70%
6 pictures = 60%
5 pictures = 50%
Each picture must be labeled clearly and must be your own. If you obtain a picture from the internet you will not receive credit on this assignment. It is extremely important to me that you do your own work.

Students must write on the topic assigned, or the submission will earn a grade of zero. Students are responsible for checking uploaded submissions for the correct version. No resubmissions are allowed after the due date. Turnitin similarity indexes must be below 25%.
Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is for you to communicate the scientific knowledge you gain both inside and outside the microbiology classroom about a particular microorganism. All possible pathogens, are microbes that you encounter in your nursing career and therefore are relevant to your nursing success. As you progress through the Microorganism Profile Project, you will research your organism and provide written explanations in your own words. All written communication is expected to meet accepted standards for grammar, syntax, and punctuation. The completed paper is to be in APA format and is to be submitted electronically via the Assignment Drop Box in Canvas located in week 9
Skills: The purpose of this assignment is to help you practice the following skills that are essential to your success in a microbiology course. In this assignment you will:
Access and collect needed information from appropriate scholarly materials.
Communicate scientific information in your own words.
Compose a well-organized, clear, concise, essay expanding your knowledge on an assigned organism.
Correctly reference cited material using APA formatting.
Knowledge: This assignment will also help you to become familiar with the following important content knowledge in this discipline:
Fundamentals of microbiology.
The interaction between microbe and host.
Use of appropriate scientific vocabulary.
Explain the chain of transmission for your assigned microbe.
Explain treatments for microbial infection.
Identify preventative measures used for the pathogen.
Identify clinical relevance for nurses and or patients.
Understand the presentation of a patient with this microbe.

Task: To complete this assignment you should:
Unit 2: In the Microorganism profile module, find your assigned microbe. Access the Microorganism Profile Assignment and Discussion forum in the week 2 module and acknowledge that you have received your assigned organism by telling the class what organism you were assigned and what it is, bacteria, virus, fungus, or protozoan.

Unit 2 to 9: As you navigate through the microbiology course, collect information specific to your organism. Use the Microorganism Profile Paper General Guidelines and Format to through you in the important information which can include but is not limited to the following:
Type of microorganism you have
Gram reaction (if any), shape and arrangement
Virulence factors
How the organism evades the immune system
Diseases your organism can cause.
How your organism can spread to others
Ways to prevent infection
How your organism will be treated
What a nurse needs to know about your organism
Prepare an APA format typed essay that documents YOUR understanding of the information and how it pertains to your assigned organism. APA is 12 point font Times New Roman with one-inch margins. Include a title and reference page and 3 to 5 content pages (total 5 to 7 pages).
Include at least 4 APA style references from scholarly articles or resources. For each reference, you will provide an in-text citation by providing a quote or paraphrasing the author’s information.
See the Rubric for complete requirements.
Unit 9: Upload your completed APA style paper to the Drop Box located in module 9.
Criteria for success: (Grading Rubric)
1. The student has thoroughly described the structure of the assigned microbe in detail, including the microbiological tools that would be necessary to observe the organism and virulence factors.
2. The student has thoroughly described the infectious disease caused by the assigned microbe, including conditions, duration of infection, complications, and predisposing factors.
3. All aspects concerning the interactions between the microbe and the human immune system were fully addressed. (all items or terms that are listed are described or explained in a very complete manner).
4. All aspects concerning the transmission of the assigned microbe between hosts are fully addressed. An original diagram created by the student is used to address epidemiology.
5. All aspects concerning the chemotherapeutic options for the assigned microbe are fully addressed.
6. All aspects concerning the clinical relevance of the assigned microbe are fully addressed.
7. The student can accurately interpret and communicate information using scientific vocabulary using written and/or graphical means consistently throughout the assignment.
8. The overall presentation is 100% complete, orderly, and demonstrates scholarly achievement including APA format, proper grammar, and punctuation.
9. At least 4 sources have been referenced, cited in-text, and references are from reputable sources.
