This week’s discussion was inspired by a student’s love for beetles (order Coleoptera) and another student’s love for spiders (order Araneae). I want to give students the opportunity to share here some facts about their favorite wild animal (whichever taxonomic group you want to use). If you don’t have a favorite wild animal, now’s a good time to pick one. 🙂 Please include (but do not limit yourself to):
The taxonomic group you are referring to (e.g. “species” if you are talking about polar bears, “genus” if you are talking about bears in general);
What interests you about them (some fun facts we can keep!);
Where they can be found (their natural habitat and region of the world);
The conservation status of a representative species within that group (e.g. if you are talking about beetles, you could pick the American burying beetle — Nicrophorus americanus — which is listed as “critically endangered” in the IUCN RedlistLinks to an external site..)

Find a news article from Science Daily (or another credible news source) that describes a recent research study that relates to protein structure. The article should be less than 3 years old.
Include the following in your main response:
• Formulate a likely hypothesis for this research study (it may not be specifically stated in the article)
• In 1-2 sentences, summarize in your own words the most important conclusion from the research study.
• Describe how this research study relates to this week’s BIOL 103 course topics. Use at least one in-text citation to one of this week’s assigned textbook chapters.

• Finally, discuss at least one broader implication of this research that was not described in the article. In other words, how do you believe these research findings may impact society, the environment, health, or the world in a positive and/or negative way? Be specific.
Use the name of the Science Daily article as the title of your post.
Use in-text citations, and include references in APA format to the chosen Science Daily article, the textbook, and all other resources used to prepare your response.

Questions: Based on the information in the presentation and disease report, discuss the following items regarding breast cancer in the U.S. Provide substantive, evidence-based answers.
1. Provide a brief definition of breast cancer.
2. Using the report provided, discuss breast cancer estimates of incidence, prevalence, and mortality in the United States. For each estimate, provide a brief explanation and include the numeric value, unit of measure, applicable population, and applicable year (if available). In the post, cite and reference the specific source provided.
3. Breast cancer cost estimate: Using information you find on your own, discuss a cost estimate in U.S. dollars ($). Source should be current (<5 years) and professional. In the post, cite and reference the source you used. The purpose of this part is to give you practice finding a professional estimate on your own; therefore, do NOT use information in the attached disease report to answer this item. SCHOLARLY ARTICLES. I have provided the files needed for the assignment. Here is the audio version for the impact of disease handout if you would like to listen to it. This is the fourth podcast you will be summarizing as a graded assignment (others can be summarized for extra credit). For this assignment, you may opt for one of two podcasts presented below.
Your summary should be between 300 and 500 words (1-
1.5 page, 1.5 spaced, Times New Roman) and should include the main points you hear on the chosen podcast.
For full credit, please include:
Three key points;
Something that is a novelty for you;
The short, take-home message;
Your personal take on this podcast.
Option 1: Crabs All the Way Down
Podcast link: Crabs All the Way Down | RadiolabThis episode is a two-parter, a double-decker crab cake of sorts. Served up on a bed of lettuce and beautiful weirdness. The first layer comes from producer Rachael Cusick, and is a story she told live on stage at Pop-Up Magazine (http://www.popupmagazine.com as a part of their Fall of 2022 tour. It chronicles a cross-species love story between artist Mary Akers (http://maryakers.com/) and an overlooked pet store companion, a creature that even Chris Tudge (https://zpr.io/MyUNwPAaqewg) – the
scientist dedicated to this creature, you could say – could not get a ring on. The second layer is cooked up by Lulu, who tries to understand why crabs keep evolving (according to recent work by Jo
Wolfe (https://zpr.io/2GftY9RjbLkF), Heather Bracken-
Grissom (https://zpr.io/HhvMVfnThp5P) and Javier
Luque (https://zpr.io/xBiQHEtNSKZr)).
Option 2: The Mosquitoes are Winning
Podcast link option 2: The Mosquitoes Are Winning | The Daily
The Daily summary:
For decades, the world seemed to be winning the war against mosquitoes and tamping down the deadly diseases they carried. But in the past few years, progress has not only stalled, it has reversed. Stephanie Nolen, who covers global health for The Times, explains how the mosquito has once again gained the upper hand in the fight.

Module 6
Introduction: In the module 5 discussion, you identified a method of prevention for each prevention tier (primary, secondary, and tertiary). This week, you were provided information regarding how public health assesses each the effectiveness of a prevention method. This assessment can be economic or in terms of morbidity or mortality. A substantive initial post answers the question presented completely and/or asks a thoughtful question pertaining to the topic. Be sure your post is unique. Do not repeat what other students have said.
Module 7
Introduction: This week, you explored what Community Health Improvement Plans (CHIPs) and Community Health Assessments (CHAs) look like in the field. You also explored some guidance provided by professional organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Association of City and County Health Officials (NACCHO). The next step is to evaluate what your recommendations have been for your portfolio project and compare that to what your community is doing to address the issue.
Initial Post: Find your community’s state or county County Health Assessment (CHA) and Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP). You can do this by typing your county name along with the search terms with Community Health Assessment or Community Health Improvement plan. What were similarities between your critical thinking portfolio assignment and your community’s CHIP and CHA. Did you identify similar issues and make similar recommendations?
Module 8
Introduction: This week you were introduced to two different and distinct ethical frameworks which are the deontological and utilitarian arguments. Throughout the course, you have been exposed to the public health approach through surveillance, education, regulation/law, and treatment. Some of these practices are distinctly different from the clinical approach and others are similar. Each approach could be in direct opposition to either the deontological or the utilitarian frameworks.
Initial Post: Consider the deontological argument and the utilitarian arguments presented in the required readings for this week. Now consider your portfolio project. Are there any conflicts between either of the ethical schools of thought with regards to your planned interventions?
Please answer each separately.
