OVERVIEW
The Analytical Essay is an opportunity to research a topic of interest related to the student affairs
profession and analyze how student development theory informs current research and best
practices. This assignment will be completed in stages throughout the course so that you can
focus on fully developing each section of your critical analysis of the current research and
supporting theory for your chosen current issue. You will use a student development theory as a
framework and discuss how theory informs research about a current issue affecting higher
education today. You will show how student affairs practitioners can put the principles behind
the theory into practice in order to address a current issue and support student development.
For this assignment, you will submit a rough draft of your final essay by compiling Parts 1 and 2
of the Analytical Essay Assignments and using the research completed for the Part 3 annotated
bibliography and Part 4 outline assignments. Please use the information below, as well as the
Analytical Essay Example, for additional guidance. Analytical example. part 3, and outline assignment attached
INSTRUCTIONS
Your rough draft must include the following:
 Title page
 Abstract
 References page
 A word count of 1,200-1,500, excluding the title page, abstract, and references
 Citations from the original work of the chosen theorist in current APA formatting.
Reference the book/article in which the theorist(s) first presented or refined the theory.
For example, do not cite a secondary source about Tinto’s (1993) theory of student
departure, but cite the original theorist’s primary source and seminal contribution to the
field.
 A 2 – 3-page synthesis of related literature, citing at least seven sources in current APA
formatting. Sources must include current peer-reviewed articles or news articles
published within the past five years. The original theoretical work will be older than this,
which is fine. You may also reference the course textbook and the two Long articles,
which are all older than five years.
 You must identify relevant scriptural principles and perspectives from a biblical
worldview, including at least one relevant Bible verse. In composing this section, please
ensure you fully explain how your chosen verse(s) and scriptural principles relate to your
chosen topic. This should be the length of an entire paragraph. Simply including a Bible
verse with minimal or no explanation is not acceptable.
 A clear and concise summary that pulls together all of the key points of your essay within
the context of your theoretical framework. This should be 1 – 2 paragraphs.

Career readiness speaks to the core competencies the college graduate should demonstrate to effectively enter today’s workforce (The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), 2021). The National Association of Colleges and Employers (2021) identifies eight career-ready competencies that students should possess to support transition from the academic environment to the workforce.
Career & Self-Development
Career & Self-development encompasses an awareness of one’s strengths and weakness and proactively working to improve one’s skills/abilities. Career and self-development align with personal motivation, a top six priority for today’s employers (Baird & Parayitam, 2029). It also includes the understanding in how to navigate career opportunities and build networking relationships. The ability to navigate career opportunities and build networking relationships aligns with social mobility factors that play a role in employability (Hossain et al., 2020). Social mobility speaks to the leveraging political connections and social status to further one’s career.
Communication
Communication is a soft skill (Hossain et al., 2020) that allows one to communicate with others clearly and effectively (NACE, 2021). Communication speaks to one’s ability to listen, question, and respectfully communicate with other (NACE, 2021). The ability to listen and effectively communicate is one of the top six skills that employers are looking for in those they hire (Baird & Parayitam, 2019)
Critical thinking
Critical thinking is one’s ability to understand and analyze a situation in order to make a decision or solve a problem (NACE, 2021). The ability to critically think is recognized as one of the top six competencies that today’s employers are seeking when hiring (Baird & Parayitam, 2019).
Equity & Inclusion
Equity and Inclusion competencies is demonstrated by the awareness, attitude, understanding, and ability to equally engage and include individuals from all cultures within and outside of the work environment (NACE, 2021). Diversity, equity, and inclusion skills have also been recognized as an imperative for higher education (National Association of Student Personal Administrators, 2022).
Leadership
Leadership is one’s ability to recognize and leverage personal and team strengths to achieve an organizational initiative (NACE, 2021).
Professionalism
Professionalism speaks to the effective work habits and behaviors that come together to positively influence the workplace and community at large (NACE, 2021). Professionalism is one of the top six skills that today’s employers are seeking when hiring (Baird & Parayitam, 2019).
Teamwork
Teamwork is characterized by the ability to establish and maintain effective interprofessional relationships that are respectful of diverse opinions, collaborative in nature, and have shared responsibilities (NACE, 2021). The ability to work effectively within a team is one of the top six competencies for membership of today’s workforce (Baird & Parayitam, 2019).
Technology
The ability to understand and utilize technology to drive efficiency, productivity, and outcome is an essential competency for today’s workforce (NACE, 2021).
Today’s employers are expecting college graduates to demonstrate the competencies outlined. Therefore, higher education institutions (HEI) should ensure graduates possess these competencies prior to graduation (Hua et al., 2022). Thus, the recommendation that HEI take the time to deliberately map these core competencies across the curriculum in support of development of student career readiness. Furthermore, it is recommended that career readiness skill attainment begin early in a student academic career (Hua et al., 2022)

Many students attend college because it is what comes next after high school. At such a young age, many do not know what careers they are interested in or what they want to do for the rest of their lives. Oftentimes, students pick a broad major in hopes that something will pique their interest. One of the current issues related to career readiness in college graduates is the lack of soft skills among students. Soft skills also happens to be what employers value. Soft skills include critical thinking, technology, equity and inclusion, communication, leadership, teamwork, professionalism, and career and self-development. In an interview done by Mayorga (2022) one of the interviewees states that “Students are not initially proficient with their soft skills” (p. 374). The article further explains how soft skills are needed regardless of the student’s major or career.
One of the student affairs areas that can support student development as it relates to career readiness is the Career Center. All institutions of higher education have a Career Center. In my experience, Career Centers are underutilized. Career Centers offer students the opportunities to explore internships, participate in career or job fairs, and have resume-building workshops as well as interviewing assistance. Unfortunately, many students are unaware of this service. One of the ways I believe that we can help fix the career readiness issue is by requiring students to do internships during their first semester in college. Regardless of whether the student enjoys their experience or not will help the student determine if it is the right career for them. “Unless students are prepared for their careers, it is likely that they end up in careers either they are not interested in or not willing to stay” (Baird & Parayitam, 2019, p. 630). If a student waits until their last semester to do an internship and they absolutely dislike the field they are working in, chances are that they will either stay in a field they do not enjoy or have to prolong their education by changing their major.
