Describe the style of the artist (How is the artist unique within the movement?)
Examine in some depth the influences that shaped the work. Address at least 2 of the following:

Cross-disciplinary influences such as literature, philosophy, music, science, technology, etc.

Museum labels are integral to helping visitors understand what they are looking at. An object label provides information about the work and introduces it to the viewer.
Choose two Oceanic art objects found in one of the following museum collections and write a label for it, as if it is on display in an exhibition. Do NOT simply copy the information from the museum. Include in your answer the collection that your chosen objects come from.

IMPORTANT: Before visiting an exhibition, make sure the exhibiting artist is someone whose work has been discussed in the available literature. Alternatively, you can discuss the work of a solo contemporary artist. Anyone mentioned in the Hopkins book is a legitimate subject for the essay.
The essay should consist of three parts: 1. A description of the work the essay will address. (You are encouraged to include pictures but pictures do not obviate the requirement to provide descriptions. You have not really looked closely at anything until you go through the process of describing it.) 2. An analysis of context. Context can touch on different things: The larger body of work produced by the artist, the work of contemporaries to which the artist is responding, the social and aesthetic climate of the period. 3. An unpacking of connotations.
Be aware that in unpacking connotations we are never likely to account for every possible connotation. What I want to see is an informed effort to engage the work and the literature about it.
