NO AI! NO ChatGPT! NO Cheating and Plagiarism! Respond to the question thoroughly, using at least three specific examples of works we have seen in class. Please respond to the entire question, not just individual parts of the question – you should answer parts a and b, and c. a)During the Renaissance there was a greater focus on intellectualism, and a reduced focus on religion, but there was a shift back to religion in Baroque architecture. Why? (hint: Reformation vs. Counter-Reformation) b)The Rococo, once again, had less of an emphasis on religious architecture. Why? c) And then in the 18th and 19th centuries, there is a large focus on revival styles in architecture. Discuss how the Enlightenment, revolutions, and politics played a large role in determining these revival styles.

Research a particular work from your text book or notes and write about a half page essay discussing style, form, and content of the piece.
– What style and category does the work fall under?
– Does this style have any similarities to other movements?
– How would you describe the formal elements of the work? Be descriptive. Think of compositional elements, the mediums used, and how they come together. Line, shape, color, and movement.
– Think about content and of the message this work or artist is trying to translate to the viewer. Does it have any social cultural context?

Do you agree or disagree with the theories that Renaissance and Baroque Masters like Vermeer created many of their paintings with the help of lenses and optical devices?

Attached is a catalog of Johannes Vermeer’s work from Rijksmuseum’s Vermeer Show, the latest exhibit in Amsterdam (https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/johannes-vermeer?ss=)
Study the work. Then answer the following question:
Do you believe that Vermeer used a lens or a camera obscura to help him create his masterpieces?
Do you agree or disagree with the theories that Renaissance and Baroque Masters like Vermeer created many of their paintings with the help of lenses and optical devices?
Your response should be around three to four paragraphs, prepared in Microsoft Word, double-spaced, and uploaded. Please cite your research sources in MLA format. For example, to cite an Internet article:

Select ONE work of art and do a formal analysis of this artwork (1000 to 1500 words in length). Print off these instructions and the Formal Analysis Guide, and take them with you to view your artwork and guide your analysis!
2) Perform a detailed formal analysis of ONE single work of art WHILE YOU ARE IN FRONT OF THE ARTWORK.
a) This is an exercise in looking. Therefore, any discussion of the artist’s biography, historical context, or your personal experience visiting the artwork will not be counted towards the word count.
b) Your essay MUST include a discussion of all the elements and principles listed in the Formal Analysis Guide. Be sure to discuss each element/principle IN ORDER and answer all questions listed in the Guide.
c) To further ensure a complete analysis, each element/principle must be printed in BOLD the first time it is used in your essay.
d) To organize your essay, your overall argument and conclusion should address how the artist achieved visual EMPHASIS through the use of each element/principle of art.
e) Your essay should be 1000-1500 words and written in coherent, flowing paragraphs – no bullet points. You may use APA or MLA format.
3) Include an image of the artwork with your essay. This image should show the artwork alone and in full view, so that I can evaluate your analysis against the original.
4) Create your own Compositional Diagram to accompany your written analysis.
a) A Compositional Diagram is the student’s visual expression of how the elements and principles work together in a specific work of art. No two students will ever have the same compositional diagram for the same artwork.
b) Essentially, this diagram is a drawing that may be done by hand or on the computer. It is basically a visual interpretation of your essay, which will use lines and shapes to show the relationship between the different elements of your chosen artwork. For example, if you notice an implied line from a figure’s eyes to an object in their hand, you will draw an actual line on top of the artwork from eyes to object.
c) Every compositional diagram is unique because each person will visually interpret a work in their own way, and each student will communicate what they want to emphasize in different ways. You may do your diagram over an image of the work itself or on a black page. Here are two examples of compositional diagrams of Las Meninas.
Lines, shapes and ovals are drawn over the painting Las Meninas

Shapes and lines are drawn on a plain white background to represent the organization of the painting Las Meninas.
5) Both the image of your artwork and your compositional diagram must be inserted into the body of your Word (.doc or .docx) or PDF document, either at the beginning or end of your essay – NOT in a separate image file.
CHOOSING AN ARTWORK:
For the purposes of this assignment please chose your artwork carefully. Choose something that holds your attention, something you want to spend time with and explore more deeply, something you are immediately drawn to or find initially confusing or repulsive. Let this be an opportunity to learn more about yourself through your experience of an unfamiliar image.
For this assignment, you may choose any art media and any materials, with the exception of time-based art (meaning no video or performance). Choose an original artwork – no copies or reproductions will be accepted. All artworks must be publicly exhibited – no artworks from your home or other private space will be accepted.

Art as communication: Discuss the ways that artists can use art to communicate a political or social message.
First, select 6 different artworks created by 3 artists from different cultures or movements. These may be selected from any legitimate source (the textbook, Google Arts & Culture, museum websites, etc.), but no more than 3 of the 6 works by come from the textbook.
Next, compose a pitch for a new exhibit featuring your chosen 6 works of art. The following will guide you through ideating and structuring your pitch to be engaging and effective.
“No one wants a synopsis. They want the sizzle.”—Laura Brennan
Creative ideas, whether for a new business or a new movie, are motivated by curiosity and emotion. When developing your pitch, consider which aspects of your selected artworks (or art in general) you have the most questions about or personal interest in investigating further. This might be a medium such as sculpture or textiles, or maybe a topic such as the role of religion in art, or the roles of artists or women in a culture that appeals most to you. Inject those curiosities and emotions into the following pitch template:
Right now, I’m really excited about [Tell us what you are most excited about for your Art Curator Project]
The first thing you need to know is [Tell us an intriguing discovery that will pull us in]
The choices of artworks in my exhibition will [Tell us what we will be seeing and learning, what the artworks will reveal to us in two or three sentences. List all 6 artworks. Include an idea about your topic—the thesis this exhibition will prove to us in a visual way. This can be a bulleted list]
At its heart, my Art Curator Project is about [Tell us the emotional core of your motivation]
Right now, the next thing I am looking for/ will do/I need is [Conclude by asking for support in developing your exhibit]
Include 3 scholarly resources.
Include citations and references for each artwork and other resources, formatting using APA or MLA. See Purdue OWL for formatting guidance.
Include a Google Maps link for each work’s current exhibition location.
Your pitch must be 500-700 words in length.
