Your writing assignment(s) each week will serve as the individual components of a working grant proposal that you will put together for your final project in Week Six.
For the Week One assignment, you will be writing a 2-page paper (not including APA formatted cover page and References section) in which you select a human service organization (HSO) and briefly introduce your grant proposal idea. Make sure to cite the website of the HSO you select and include the full reference in the References section.
HSO Search (1 paragraph). In your first paragraph, you will identify an HSO that you would like to use as the basis for your grant proposal/final project. To conduct your search, visit the site: http://www.guidestar.org/pqCriteriaEntry.do?type=new&partner=guidestar&criteriaTab=FinSearch&source=hpadvsch, and search for an organization in your city and state (please note that you will have to register for this free service). Choose an organization that provides services to your community, and that seems interesting to you. Then, in a paragraph, provide the name of the organization, the organization’s web address/URL, and a 3-5 sentence description of the organization’s mission.
Proposal Idea (1 paragraph). After you identify an organization, you’ll need to narrow the focus of your grant by coming up with a proposal idea that will improve your selected organization’s ability to meet the needs of those it serves in a specific manner. To do so, you may choose one of the specific services listed beneath the following four broad service areas (A through D below) typically addressed by HSOs, or formulate a focus of your own, based on the needs of the population served by your designated HSO. The specific service you choose will serve as the basis for your grant proposal.
A. Youth & Families Services: school drop-out prevention; increasing parental involvement; violence prevention; substance abuse prevention.
B. Homelessness & Housing Services: permanent supportive housing; transitional housing; emergency shelter; supportive services
C. Disability Services: accommodative enhancements; accessible housing opportunities; employment assistance; legal assistance and advocacy
D. Employment Services: job training readiness; job placement; vocational training, computer training
Then, describe your proposal idea (4 paragraphs) and answer the following four questions (two to three sentences each), as listed on page 16 of the text (again, this proposal idea will serve as the basis for all of your written assignments throughout the course):
· What community need does the identified program or service of your organization address? (The answer to this question will become the basis of your proposal’s need statement, which you will draft in Week Two).
· What would an improved community situation look like? (The answer to this question will become the basis of your proposal’s goals and objective, which you will draft in Week Three)
· What can your organization do to improve this situation? (The answer to this question will become the basis of your proposal’s methods, which you will finalize in your Final Project).
· How will you know if your organization’s program or service has succeeded? (The answer to this question will become the basis of your proposal’s program evaluation, which you will finalize in your Final Project).

Successful grant writers know that it is not enough to have a great idea and a well-crafted proposal. To get funded, it is necessary to find funders whose needs and/or mission aligns with your particular proposal idea. This requires getting to know potential funders beyond what is provided on their website.
In your response, list and evaluate at least two practical and inventive ways in which you might network with representatives of potential funders. How, specifically, would you go about creating opportunities to learn more about the funding agency’s needs, goals, and mission and to give its representatives information on your organization? (MINIMUM OF 300 WORDS)

Instructions
Throughout the course, we have been covering topics surrounding course learning objective 3, but for this final assignment, you will be applying that knowledge to create a home food safety manual.
As you know, foodborne illness is a widespread problem, not only in the United States, but around the world. Prior to beginning this course, you may have thought that foodborne illnesses were only caused by restaurants or food manufacturers. However you have learned that what you do (or do not do) in your own home can also cause foodborne illnesses. Whether it is letting the kids sample the raw cookie dough, washing your raw chicken in the kitchen sink, letting your meat thaw at room temperature all day, or judging a burger by the way it looks, there are many ways that we can unintentionally cause harm to ourselves and our families through improper food safety practices.
For this final assignment, you will be creating a food safety manual to be used in your own home. There is a suggested table of contents listed below, but it is up to you to fully address each section. You may add to the table of contents, but you may not delete anything. Remember, this is for use in your own home, so it should be specific to your home. So if you are a parent of small children, you may be including different information than a single retired adult. Take into account the structure of your family, and who typically shops for, stores, prepares, serves, and consumes food in your home.
Do NOT include the explanations in parentheses that follow the table of contents elements – these are to help clarify what should be included – but DO include page numbers for reference.
Please do NOT copy and paste charts from various websites. Anyone can copy and paste. That does not show that you understand the concepts. Visuals are encouraged – either create your own or if you must use an existing visual, be sure to give credit to the creator of the image. You should cite your sources using APA format for in-text citations. So if you have a list of internal cooking temperatures (hint, hint), cite the source that you used to find those temperatures.
This is for you to demonstrate what you have learned and how you would share your food safety knowledge with your family and friends. Have fun with this.
Table of Contents (this is a minimum to include)
Introduction to Food Safety
How Food can Become Contaminated in the Home Kitchen
Safe Purchasing Practices (where do you shop, what do you look for, how do you transport your groceries home)
Safe Storage Practices (how and where is your food stored, do you rotate, check package dates)
Safe Preparation Practices (who cooks, what are they wearing, what do they do – include at least 4 internal cooking temperatures and explain how to check, handwashing)
Safe Serving Practices (family style, who plates the food, parties and buffets)
Household Food Safety (here you can include extra tips that you want to cover – think about things like if you have children, how you will instill good food safety and hygiene practices, consider listing some “training” resources, the poison control line, what to do if you suspect a foodborne illness, where to report unsafe food that you have purchased, etc.)
??anything else you would like to include??
References (formatted in APA format)
There is no set minimum page count, but be sure that you are fully explaining each content area. At least 1 – 2 pages written for each topic is the recommendation. Refer to the rubric for details on how the assignment will be evaluated. Please ask for any necessary clarifications prior to submitting your assignment.
Have fun! The more relevant you make this for your own household, the more fun you will have with it.

This week’s assignment is a written paper, formatted according to APA, 7th edition format. Please be sure to use a correctly formatted title page including headers, and an APA formatted reference page. A minimum of 4 valid resources are required and in-text citations are required to show where and how you have used each resource to support your conclusions.
The purpose of this paper is to examine contemporary issues related to food safety, including tampering, bioterrorism, and different food safety standards across the globe, and identifying food safety barriers that can cause issues with food safety in a global, interconnected environment.
I suggest that you divide your papers into sections so that you cover the main topics of: tampering, bioterrorism, differing food safety standards, and finish up by explaining how those issues can cause problems with food safety in a global environment. Basically, you will be writing a paragraph or two on each issue and then finishing up with a few paragraphs that tie them all together and show how those issues impact food safety globally.
Make sure that you include an introduction to the paper as well as a conclusion. Be sure that you are writing from a third person perspective and using sources to back up what you are saying. Remember, in an academic paper, just because you say so…that does not make it true. You need to support your conclusions with a valid resource.
Below are some very relevant and informational resources to help you with writing an academic paper. Please review them and let your instructor know if you have any questions. These are all located in the writing center of the APUS Library, so you will need to be logged into your student account to access them.

The group of Jews that was similar to Jesus of Nazareth would be The Essenes because there were believers of the traditional God of second Temple of Judaism. Torah or the law of Moses along with the Jewish scriptures and a powerful enemy of God, the Evil one was part of both of their beliefs also.

For many of us, one of the most interesting and fun aspects of studying sociology is how relevant the discipline is to our everyday lives. This is even true of the methods we use to study sociology. Hardly a day goes by without reading or hearing about research that can help explain our lives.
For example, we are learning that life expectancy in the U.S. is on the decline, which may seem counter-intuitive. After all, we are the richest nation on earth with excellent medical care improved by constantly improving technological discoveries. Misunderstanding life expectancy is generally on the decline may lead to misconceptions on general limits of medicine and science. But, when we look a little deeper at studies of life expectancy, we learn that for the wealthiest Americans, life expectancy is on the rise, while for those with the lowest socio-economic status (SES), it is on the decline. Since there are more people of lower SES than the highest, the overall rate is pushed downward.
This is one example of how we can make better sense of commonly-held information, if we just look a little deeper to get a sense of SOCIAL forces that influence these kinds of outcomes.
After completing the reading for Chapter 2, describe beliefs about a social issue  that we believe to be true but is actually untrue, misknown, or understood incompletely. (HINTS: Consider homelessness, unemployment, poverty, immigration, etc.).
THIS IS A BIT OF AN ABSTRACT ASSIGNMENT.  Critically consider the assignment but don’t overthink it. The goal is to get you to think about how and what sociological research methods might be used to explore the subject you choose.
Include 1) a description of the information, 2) how you think that information was created, 3) your reaction to that information/partial or total misconception, and 4) what kind of sociological research method might be used to improve and deepen our understanding of this information.  (Pay special attention to item 4).
