Brian’s winter is an entrance into the mind of a boy named Brian. Gary Poulsen is the author of this book and the reasoning behind why this book was written was because the book called Hatchet that Poulsen wrote was a very enjoyable and popular book., and fans loved the book so much that they wrote to his wife and they all asked for a new addition to the book and he wanted to connect it to the original book hatchet. Brian must face the winter alone and on this journey, he discovers flint and makes arrowheads so he can kill larger prey, uses rabbit and moose skin to make warm clothing, and even finds a way to make snowshoes so he will not sink in the snow while hunting. Brian’s Winter is a scenario that takes a beloved character back to the woods and shows readers why he survives the woods in the first place and even puts different images in your head about what he is doing to survive this challenge. Drawn by the smell of the meat that he finds from the wolf’s kill, a skunk shows up at Brian’s shelter. Brian feeds the skunk, befriends it, and names it Betty. One night, also drawn by the smell of the meat a bear attacks brian’s shelter. Just as it looks like the bear might kill Brian, betty arrives and sprays the bear. This is an interesting impact on the way you see Brian because he does not choose to kill the skunk and have more meat he decides to befriend it and it saves his life. This is a perfect example that social interactions are a necessity in all human lives and Brian is no exception. The fact that Brian chose not to kill the skunk just goes to show that even when humans and all other animals are just trying to survive, we place companionship just beneath the priority of survival.
Brian makes a spear using the flint that he used for the arrowheads on his bow and arrows. Brian goes hunting after he makes the spear and comes across a moose. Brian shoots an arrow at the moose and the moose only gets angry at him. The moose charges Brian and he manages to stick his newly made spear into it and kills it. Brian takes the moose meat that he cuts off back to his camp and leaves it out in the snow to let it freeze the meat lasts Brian a long time because it is frozen so the smell to animals is way less and the meat will not get rotten. As it gets colder and it gets deeper into the winter Brian makes himself snowshoes and begins exploring the woods further away from his original shelter and campground. One night Brian hears gunshots and is very interested in them so the next morning, he goes to explore the area where the shots came from. This shows how Brian is able to survive in the woods when most others would fail miserably. Brian is willing to take risks and go beyond the lengths where others would be afraid. Brian stumbles upon the camp of a Cree trapping family. Brian stays with them for three weeks until their supply plane comes and finally gets back home. “Do what you can as you can. Trouble, problems, will come no matter what you do, and you must respond as they come.” this quote was one of the biggest reach outs of this book and that is because it was a very inspirational and touching quote which is very interesting because it is hard to find things like this in books that we read now but Gary Paulsen is my favorite author because he knows how to reach different personalities and different lifestyles and that’s what makes him this award-winning author.
