This movie is a scientific one, concerned with ‘matter’, and the basic particles that may have made up the Earth. The narrator tells us that at the time the Universe was created, it may have been very dense and humid, and we do not know for sure what particles they were, that were created by matter. What we know, is that everything was created by basic matter.

The Hubble Space Shuttle can go back in time and see what it was that initiated the structure of the Universe, what particles were incorporated, etc., but still, there remain doubts as to whether these particles were rightly mentioned and detected.

Experimentation had to carry on finding out the relations between mass and energy, and how mass was attained from energy. The tool called the LHC, or the Large Head-on Collider, is the most powerful accelerator ever built. It detects protons colliding head on, with extremely high energy. Collisions with this energy show a lot, they generate particles which can be seen by detectors such as the ATLAS.

There came a time when people started calculating and observing the relations between mass and energy and the basic matter that may have made particles that in turn make up other things. It was found out that the Earth is the centre of everything, according to the “Geocentric Model”. Later on in the sixteenth century, scientists like Galileo came to realize that the Sun, and not the Earth, was the centre of the Universe. More and more experimentation began.

All the forces of nature have an impact on our daily lives. The twentieth century was marked by the emergence of subjects such as physics, chemistry and biochemistry. Awareness started growing regarding mass and its relations to other forces of nature. Mass and energy can be converted into each other.

The “Standard Model” was then looked into, which answers questions regarding the structure and stability of matter, and the fundamental forces of basic particles. The ATLAS experiment shows that there are three families which build up matter, only the first of which can build stable matter. These families are made of composed of four sections each, two quarks and two leptons. The forces between all the particles are kept in tact by either photons, or gluons, or other such forces.

There are four forces in nature, which are, gravity, electromagnetism, strong force and weak force. There is an underlying symmetry of forces between all particles, and ATLAS aims to search for evidence of this symmetry. Each particle has its own mass; some have larger mass than others.

The basic aim of ATLAS is to see what forces there are between particles and what constitutes basic matter- was there something missing which people could not detect when the Universe was made? ATLAS will conduct experiments to see the effects of matter and the binding forces which keep particles together and also study the symmetry of these forces and attachments.
