Your task for this paper will be to investigate skywatching in an ancient culture. You can choose any culture except for those that we covered as case studies in class (e.g., Stonehenge, the Maya, and the Inca).
Here are a series of questions that you may want to address in your paper:
• Where and when did this group live? What was their basic economic and political structure (for example, state-level society, farmers, hunter-gatherers, etc.)? Does our knowledge of them come from written records, material culture, and/or oral tradition?
• What did their night sky look like? In other words, what constellations did they see? What names did they give them?
• What do we know about their religious beliefs, cosmogony (creation story), and cosmology (organization of the universe)? How did these connect to celestial bodies?
• How was their calendar organized? What celestial bodies did they use to keep track of time?
• Did they use natural or artificial structures as celestial alignments? If so, what was their purpose?
• Overall, how did skywatching fit within their broader cultural system? What motivated them (pragmatic concerns, religious devotion, scientific curiosity, etc.) to keep track of celestial motions?
Your paper should be about 1800-2000 words and must incorporate at least four scholarly sources (peer-reviewed journal articles, academic books, encyclopedia entries). You must also upload pdfs or full-text links of your sources with the paper.
A few notes about writing conventions:
• You must cite your sources in-text in APA format (Author’s Last Name, Year of Publication, Page Number) and include those sources (but no others) in a Works Cited page at the end.
• Except for special circumstances, you should paraphrase rather than directly quote from your sources (but always cite!). Sources should always be attributed by author’s last name with a signal phrase: “Smith (2019, p. 25) argues/claims/asserts that…”. No need to include the title of the article or book here. Also, avoid free-standing quotes.
• You should include a brief Introduction that lays out the topic of the paper and explains the various sections. Write this last, once you know how your paper is structured!
• Remember to write transition sentences between the sections of your paper.
• Feel free to use Generative AI as a “writing partner” or ideas generator, but don’t let it do your thinking for you!
