Assignment 2 Instructions: Analysis of Mixed Methods Research in Nursing
General Instructions:
Please review the written instructions below and the rubric provided below for this assignment.
Overview of Assignment:
Assignment #2 is a Mixed Methods Proposal that you develop. The objective of Assignment #2, is for students to:
1) Perform a limited search of the literature on a selected PICO topic/concept provided to them;
2) To demonstrate competency in proposing operationalization of the study concept and;
3) Propose how they would plan a study using mixed methods research strategies.
Review Chapter 27 in your text which covers the basics of mixed methods, and also Chapter 8 on Planning a Nursing Study.
***Please refer to the grading rubric located below***
General: Please take a look at examples in the Polit & Beck text Chapter 27:
The maximum length of 7 pages- (1) title page; (1) reference page; up to 5 pages for the body of the paper; and a table (last page- not included in page count).
Section 1- Key Challenges
Q1. Review the Lund article, and summarize three key challenges to doing mixed methods research. (worth 20 points). Respond to this question in your descriiption: What constitutes mixed methods research? (worth 5 points)
Next, review this research aim which can apply to a Mixed Methods Research Proposal:
AIM: Identify levels of stress among new graduate registered nurses (RNs) working in emergency room (ER) settings.
Section 2- Proposed Quantitative Study of Stress
Q2. The purpose of this paper is to describe your methods/plan of study for quantitative evaluation of stress among new graduate RNs working in ER settings; (Refer to Polit and Beck chapter 8; Review Table 8.1 for planning a study).
Section 2A
Begin section 2 with the paragraph header “proposed quantitative study in nursing” and in the first few sentences state the purpose of the study (see AIM above).
First, glean the literature first on stress, using multiple databases if needed such as: Google Scholar, CINANHL, Scopus, Pubmed/Medline. Develop a working idea of the literature on stress among new graduates (RNs) in ER settings as it relates to how it is defined and any type of intervention suggested. To glean a preliminary thought on what comparative and what intervention might be plausible to study you will need to review the literature first- perform a limited review of the literature to see what the evidence shows, by using the key terms “stress among new graduate RNs/ stress among new graduate RNs working in ERs”.
Note with this first search of the literature you are likely to find evidence which may discuss a particular intervention such as use of frequent breaks or use of pet therapy to impact stress. Also the research articles on the topic will include how the intervention is operationalized and measured with certain metrics-which can be useful as you contemplate the components of your proposed study.
Perform a limited review of the literature using key terms “stress among new graduates or nurses” using the following URL: pubmedhh.nlm.nih.gov/pico/index.php Alternatively, go to PUBMED.gov and search key terms OR Google Scholar OR Scopus or Medline. Refer to Polit and Beck chapter 2, Step 2, pg. 34 and refer to Table 2.2 in Polit and Beck.
Second, formulate your own PICO question. Recall you will need to determine what intervention you would like to propose and the comparative. For this paper, select one Intervention and one Comparative selected in the PICO format should be based on what interests you and what is in the literature. An example of one intervention ( IV) and One comparative (DV) : Is aromatherapy more effective than standard care at reducing stress in new graduate RNs working in the ER?
Section 2B. Next summarize how many randomized controlled trial studies did you find for the past 5 years (2017-2023) which evaluated stress management using your PICO question – this section is the background section. Plan to check multiple databases if you find no articles in one database- for example any of these: Google Scholar, CINANHL, Scopus, Pubmed/Medline, ERIC.
The next section of the paper is Methods Section (see section 2c and 2d below): Here you will write about the quantitative design that you are proposing, the design and plan you propose to investigate your PICO question- describe the intervention you have chosen in the PICO question and your comparative; describe the sample of subjects you are selecting –for more detail on research designs- please see Polit & Beck textbook, Ch 8 pages 158-164. how you will recruitment the sample, what is the setting, and procedures selected to measure stress? For more detail on data collection approaches please refer to Polit & Beck textbook, Ch 8 pages 164-168. Methods follow a standard approach- in a specific order- Design type (RCT or others) & time frames (prospective, cross sectional) etc; setting & descriiption, sample and descriiption & recruitment; procedures, time line. Plan to use this same exact sample in the mixed methods section 4.
Section 2C. Methods Section: Procedures- how will stress be defined or “operationalized” quantitatively? Refer to Polit and Beck Ch 3 pg. 45 and Box 3.1 on pg 46.
Section 2D. Methods Section –Procedures- describe in detail in your plan how you will measure stress quantitatively? Look in your limited review of the literature to determine how other quantatiave studies have measured stress – how will it be measured? By whom? When? Using what measures or criteria? Are the metrics you use valid and reliable? Cite their validity and include a reference. Overall, this section has a scientific rationale for your procedures and at least one citation.
Section 3- Qualitative Study of Stress
Begin section 3 with the paragraph header “proposed Qualitative study of stress in nursing” and in the first few sentences state the overall purpose of the qualitative study proposal and then describe the study design (there are 4 to choose from) and include Q3, a and b below.
Section 3 Q3. Describe how you would study from a qualitative perspective, individual nurse responses to stress while working in ER settings? Refer to Polit and Beck Chapter 22, Table 22.1. Provide detail about your design selected, sample chosen and recruitment strategy, and procedures to measure stress in the sample.
Section 3A. Who would you include in your sample of subjects and who would you exclude? Describe your recruitment strategy to obtain a representative sample of subjects? How many subjects would you target to enroll in your study?
Section 3B. What might you ask them? Provide one appropriate research question you would start your interview with (5 points)- also summarize in the table. Here you are writing about it in your paper as to what you plan to ask them and why (based on a scholarly rationale) and then placing the questions in a table as well at the end of your paper (following the reference page).
Section 4- Methods- Analysis of the Data
Section 4- Q4. Refer to Shorten & Smith article to describe which methods would you select to integrate the 2 mixed methods described above in order to analyze the data and who would be the researchers? (worth a total of 20 points). Refer to Polit and Beck Chapter 27, Table 27.1. Note – no need to reintroduce your sample again here; describe which type of mixed methods your would use to analyze the quantitative and qualitative data.
