Introduction
An argumentative essay, unlike other types of essays, is a genre that focuses on a specific topic by collecting, generating, and evaluating evidence. Furthermore, argumentative essays require writers/students to take a stance on the subject. Argumentative essays, like other types of essays, have a similar structure, including an introduction, a body of paragraphs, and a conclusion. As a result, this paper examines the structure of an argumentative essay, highlighting its distinct differences from other essays in academic writing.
Discussion
The introduction is the first part of any type of essay. It needs to have a hook or an opening statement to catch readers attention. In the introduction, students need to connect background information pertaining to the topic to the thesis statement (English, 2020). Moreover, the last sentence of the introduction paragraph is the thesis statement and consists of an opposing point of view, your argument, and the reason for readers to buy the writers line of thought.
The second part of an argumentative essay is the body of paragraphs. Depending on the evidence that one can collect and generate, the body may consist of several sections, with the last paragraph consisting of counterargument, concede, rebuttal, and then arguing why the chosen line of thought is correct (English, 2020). The remaining body paragraphs should begin with a topic sentence that explains the writers point of argument and then be supported with evidence. As listed in the thesis statement, each body paragraph should defend the authors line of thought with words and thoroughly researched evidence (English, 2020). In other words, an argumentative essay body contains supporting evidence, counterarguments, concede and refute, and explains why your thoughts should be considered.
Conclusion
Like other essays, the conclusion is the last part of an argumentative essay. In this part, the author needs to restate the thesis statement and summarize the main points covered in the essay. Moreover, the conclusion of an argumentative essay needs to explain the reason for disapproving of other peoples perspectives regarding the topic of discussion. The writer also needs to end the hook by discussing the future outcomes or the consequences considering their stance on a particular issue or topic.
