As a student and on the job, you will be responsible for sharing information that is accurate and reliable. This discussion will help you prepare for this week’s Summative Assessment: Cover Letter and Reflection, which requires you to conduct research about the job and employer you selected in Week 2, which was Google
This week the focus is on writing for career-, profession-, and discipline-specific situations. To begin this discussion, reflect on the following:
What is your degree program or ideal career?
How do professionals in your degree program or ideal career talk to each other? What terminology do they use? What platforms do they use? Is the communication primarily formal or informal?
There are 3 parts to the discussion this week. Complete all 3 parts and submit them by Thursday.
Part 1: Resource
Search for an article related to your future career by searching the University Library by subject or using another search tool, such as LinkedIn or Google.
Note: For assistance with this process, refer to the Evaluating Sources section in the Week 1 University Library Resources.
Review your selected article and consider not only what is written, but also how it is written. Make observations about the writing and prepare to share those details in your discussion.
Part 2: Response
Respond to the following questions using information from the resource you selected in Part 1:
Which article did you select?
What was the author’s purpose for writing the article?
Who was the author’s target audience?
Describe the writer’s general tone of voice.
How does this author establish their credibility in this field?
Is this a credible source? How can you tell?
What other details about how the article was written stood out to you as important?
Part 3: Resource Credit
Practice giving credit (i.e., citation) to the resource you selected in Part 1 and used for your response in Part 2. Giving proper credit to your sources builds your credibility with your audience. Don’t worry about perfection. If you make a mistake, your faculty member can help, so please let your faculty member know if you have any questions.
Include the following in your response using APA format for the resource you selected:
In-text citations:
Credit the source within your response. For example, a parenthetical citation format would appear as: (Adams, 2016, p. 23)
Tip: To create in-text citations, you can use a citation generator, such as the Reference & Citation Generator in the Center for Writing Excellence, to cite the article in your response.
A reference (i.e., the resource’s full information):
Place it at the end of your response in the references section.
Tip: To create references, you can consult the References page on the APA Style website for assistance.
