Introduction
In this paper I will discuss two types of art work and they are; analytical art and expressive art. Also it is important to discuss how the two lines of style are illustrated in specific artworks for example; Number in colors of 1958-1959 by Jasper Johns and The Death of Sardanapalus. The essay will also discuss the differences between the two artworks. The same essay will also describe some specific terms which are related to art and they are; picture plane, reserve and two dimension space.
Art-analytical and Expressive lines
Expressive art is normally the use of creativity in art as a type of therapy. In art, creation as an expression is always emphasized with regard to the end product. It is always believed by many people that this therapy can bring healing via creative expressions and imagination. In his painting, Jasper Johns used this explicit style (expressive art), where he illustrated his early technique in art work. In his painting, the Flag, Jasper uses this line of style, where the art was illumined through a dream (Jasper, p. 34). Expressive art also features widely in the various art works of Eugene Delacroix, in most them he used color to create his name as an impressionist, in the painting, Death of Sardanapalus , and he also used this set of work to illustrate various paintings in Shakes Spear’s book. Expressive art can also be used to show ones feelings towards certain things surrounding us.
Analytical art is a type of work that is usually used to analyze various topics related to human beings, for example the personality of people, which may resemble the majority. This type of art is very common in many artists across the globe where Jasper and Eugene use them too. For example Jasper used this style in his painting of Number in Colors, 1958.This style is also profound in Eugene’s paintings for example the painting Death of Sardanapalus, 1828, which shows a painting of a sick and dying king who watches his troops complying to his orders to kill his workers and servants (Eugene, p. 45). This painting helps people to analyze the effects of tyrannical leadership, who cannot be disobeyed.
Description of terms
Charles Demuth has used two dimensional spacing in his superb artwork. A two dimensional space art work is an illustration where one draws or paints on a piece of paper. In two dimensional spaces paint has less volume in space, and it does not give the viewer the impression of depth and distance in the painting. This type of painting ensures that there is good management of space. For example Demuth used the two dimension space to draw his famous painting of, I Saw the Figure Five in Gold (Demuth, p. 56).
Picture plane according to clowns is the flat surface on which the painting is on, for example a paper, it is also known as the pictures ground. In every painting one has to use a picture plane in order to proceed with his work.
The reserve is the remaining part of the picture plane which has not been used. It is prudent for a good painter to leave a well proportional picture reserve in order to give the painting a well balanced impression; like in many of his painting Charles Demuth has justified this line of argument.
