The Gaza strip is a region in Palestine bordering Egypt. Its administrative governance was based in Egypt but was later invaded by Israel due to political reasons. This takeover brought about a fight between the two countries and foreign countries such as France and Britain for the purpose of controlling the region. Due to the war and instability, the UN formed a peacekeeping branch, UNEF-UN Emergency Force. Its peacekeeping mission was to run the region using restrictions meant to ensure safety for humanity.
Local Outcomes of Peacekeeping in the Gaza Strip
UNEF was formed by the UN for various reasons. It was constituted of soldiers from foreign countries and Gaza workers (but not soldiers and police). UNEF brought the following outcomes in Gaza:
There was extensive hostility in Gaza due to the presence of Israeli troops. UNEF mission made peace instead of waging war in Gaza (Feldman 420). The mission involved the population in the region and the UNEF soldiers. The soldiers employed humane tactics on the ground through protecting vulnerable people by creating human space and good relations for them as a way of implementing peacemaking in Gaza. Humanity perception was brought by the politics in those days.
These occurrences forced UNEF to express its objectives to the victims of the disastrous outcomes of the war in Gaza in a concrete manner. Peacekeeping in Gaza gave the peacekeepers lots of a hard time (Feldman 424). The mission was characterized by a persistent tension between the soldiers and the local population. Humanity laws and the question of familiarity with the culture in Gaza were the major reasons for this situation.
There was a lack of understanding of cultural practices between the UNEF and Gaza. It was difficult to come up with terms for ensuring the humane treatment of people and peace in the area. UNEF soldiers had their own culture. Thus, they had to formulate strategies on how to be resolute and maintain peace. The mission built political conditions and meaningful systems. The UN was forced to withdraw its troops from the region due to the instability between the local administration and the international community. The culture of the peacekeepers, to some extent, posed challenges to the relations. Nonetheless, peace interventions were employed and adopted to solve the problems.
