ANSWER THE QUESTIONS:
On October 13th 2007, 138 Muslim scholars wrote a letter entitled “A Common Word Between Us and You” in a response to Pope Benedict XVI’s Regensburg address. The letter began:
In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Muslims and Christians together make up well over half of the world’s population. Without peace and justice between these two religious communities, there can be no meaningful peace in the world. The future of the world depends on peace between Muslims and Christians.
The basis for this peace and understanding already exists. It is part of the very foundational principles of both faiths: love of the One God, and love of the neighbor. These principles are found over and over again in the sacred texts of Islam and Christianity. The Unity of God, the necessity of love for Him, and the necessity of love of the neighbor is thus the common ground between Islam and Christianity.
A few questions about this:
1) The scholars used the term “foundational principles” before ultimately defining them. Without simply copying what they identified, what “foundational principles” would YOU have identified of Christianity? Of Islam?
2) Now, please reflect on the principles they identified. Do you agree with their choice? Does it accurately reflect the “core beliefs” of Christianity? Based on your readings/reflections this year, would you add/change anything?
Target length- 1-2 well developed (and supported) paragraphs for each question.
In 2006, school officials in Modesto CA, decided to include a mandatory “Introduction to World Religions” class into the 9th grade public school curriculum. Predictably, many students and parents were excited about this decision, and many were hesitant. After some fierce debate, the district voted to continue this practice (which continues to this day).
Now- you are an adult student at Mercy College, a university that is tied to the Roman Catholic Church and follows Jesuit education principles. In many ways, the fact that you had to take this class makes sense. However, public schools in CA are not religious in nature, and the students are all children…so was this the right decision? What are the potential harms of having public school children study religion? What are the potential benefits of this?
The only resource you need for this assignment is your own personal experience of taking a religion class in college (this class). No need to Google it or use the book…use your own beliefs/opinions as someone who has been “forced” to take a similar class yourself.
To summarize: you need to answer the following prompts:
1) Did Modesto CA make the right decision to make an Introduction to World Religions class part of the 9th grade curriculum? Why/Why not?
2) What are the harms of this?
3) What are the benefits?
