Build on what you discovered in your Research Exploration Assignment in order to further examine an issue from the Gale in Context: Opposing Viewpoints Database. Write an essay in which you consider sources from Gale as well as one reading from our class in order to analyze how different kinds of sources approach this issue, and make an argument about an aspect of the issue that is significant to you.
Your argument could focus on a problem or challenge that you believe is at the center of the issue, barriers that make it difficult to resolve, or an approach to overcoming these barriers that you find particularly compelling. Your essay will support your argument by demonstrating how it connects to major conversations within your issue, and analyzing how academic research, news coverage, and magazine/periodical sources address the issue and contribute to the conversation about it. Your essay should incorporate at least one of each of these types of sources, and at least four Gale sources total (plus one reading from our class).
While you may not have a solution to your issue (complex issues aren’t easy to solve), you should be able to make an argument about an aspect of it that is significant and why. Identify an angle that’s interesting to you, show how it connects to conversations about this issue, and explain how these conversations vary across different kinds of sources. Use the Viewpoints and Featured Viewpoints sections in Gale to help you identify some key conversations in your issue, but be sure to explore a range of academic, news and magazine sources in order to analyze the conversations and approaches happening within them.
For example, an essay that examines an issue related to pollution and environmental justice could make an argument about this issue, and also identify trends in how different kinds of sources address the issue: magazine/periodical sources are often short (100-500 words), with some longer articles (1,000-3,000+ words). These sources often explore the impact of specific environmental issues, often providing the stories of specific figures (people, companies, governments, etc.) along with current or historical information that helps us contextualize it. In contrast, news sources provide shorter and more timely accounts of specific events, new findings, proposed legislation, etc. Academic research sources cross multiple disciplines within the humanities and sciences. Sources of all kinds participate in conversations about pollution and environmental justice, including the causes, effects, and solutions.
Essay Requirements:
Your essay should be 5-6 pages in length
Your essay will make an argument about an issue that interests you, and locate your argument within conversations about that issue. You must incorporate specific evidence from one class reading, and also incorporate evidence from at least 4 Gale sources. These sources should include at least one of each of the following genres: academic (peer-reviewed) article, news article, and magazine/periodical source.
At least one of your sources should be identified as a “Viewpoint” source so that it makes an explicit argument. (It will be difficult to connect your argument to conversations and arguments about your issue if at least some of your sources aren’t also making arguments)
All sources must be clearly cited in the body of the essay and included in your Works Cited.
