According to the Brookings Institute, media bias has contributed to Americans becoming
more politically polarized. News media, social media, and search engines have become
biased, politicized, and personalized, and we are often stuck inside filter bubbles, where
we’re only exposed to information and ideas we already agree with. When bias is hidden
and we see only facts, information, and opinions that confirm our existing beliefs, a number
of negative things happen:1) we become extremely polarized as a nation as wemisunderstand or hate the “the other side,” believing they are extreme, hateful, or evil; 2) we become more likely to be manipulated into thinking, voting, or behaving a certain way; 3) we become limited in our ability to understand others, problem solve and compromise; 4) we become unable to find the truth. It feels good to hear from people who think just like us, and media outlets have an incentive to be partisan — it helps them to earn ad revenue, especially if they use sensationalism and clickbait. But when we stay inside a filter bubble, we may miss important ideas and perspectives. Understanding media bias is important because it helps us to easily identify different perspectives and learn to critically evaluate information.
Step 1:Think of a recent political event or topic. (immigration, the government shutdown, gun
control, anything that you are interested in) and find two news articles on the topic. The articles
must have pictures. One article should be from a “liberal” point of view. The other article should
be from a “conservative” point of view.
Many modern news organizations are thought of as having a liberal or conservative bias.
Generally, this means that their reporting favors the Democratic Party or the Republican Party.
The following infographic from Allslides shows some examples:

bias/media-bias-chart
Step 2:Write an introduction paragraph and then summarize the liberal news story in one
paragraph.
Step 3: Summarize the conservative news story in one paragraph.
Step 4: Compare and contrast the words used in the two stories. Look for the use of different
adjectives and adverbs. (Refer to Ch. 10 for this). Why do you think the stories chose the words
that they used? Use one paragraph.
Step 5: Compare and contrast the images that accompany your article. What purposes do the
images serve? Use one paragraph. Then write a concluding paragraph.
Your entire journal should be at least two pages in length. Your journal should be double spaced
and typed in 12-point font.
Step 6: Include the links to your articles at the end of your paper in an MLA Works Cited page.
