I’m a freshman at Stockton University in my first semester of college. As an eighteen-year-old with three younger siblings, I’m held to a lot of responsibility and accountability in how I do at school and in my regular daily life. I’m currently majoring in business management but have a feeling that I will most likely switch my major going into my sophomore year to communications. I chose to go to college because I’m the first in my family to go to college and attend a four-year university, but also wanted to do this for myself to have a lot more career opportunities in my future. I also wanted to go to college to network with others and create a strong foundation for my future endeavors. My learning process over the years has fluctuated from many different things and also varies upon the subject as to how I process the information and personally I feel that I learn better visually and more hands on. Throughout class so far this year we have discussed different ways of thinking and different learning styles.
Starting off with critical thinking this was a big lesson in the beginning of the year and has been carried all through the semester in this class. Critical thinking is the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgment. You should be open minded to new ideas or thoughts having your creativity flow as well as carefully exam what you are discussing. Critical thinking as a learner does help me keep my open mindedness, because sometimes I do have that mental block, but anyone can. Keeping in mind though, with myself, to think critically helps me be more analytical and see things from both sides expands my thinking as a learner. Being able to think critically opens up a lot of higher educational thinking and personally I feel thinking and speaking critically you sound more confident in what you’re talking about.
As for the Myers and Briggs’ personality test my score could have not represented how I am any better. Now normally I think these things are made up but after I calculated my numbers and everything was set, I was left shocked. For those who don’t know what the Myers and Briggs’ personality test is, its purpose is to make the theory of psychological types described by C. G. Jung understandable and useful in people’s lives. The main stressor of the theory is that random variation in behavior is actually quite normal and consistent, being due to familiar differences in the ways individuals prefer to use their perception and judgment. On the test I had scored the highest in the fourth preference pair which describes how I like to live my outer life. Scoring the highest in perceiving, I prefer a flexible and spontaneous way of life, and I like to understand and adapt to the world rather than organize it, but what people don’t see on the inside is that I am very planful and decisive. I like most things I do to be planned and done in an orderly fashion rather than all over the place, but I don’t mind going with the flow every now and then. From my interpretation, Myers and Briggs believes that perceiving means preferring to take in information. Not to be confused with perceptive, meaning having quick and accurate assumptions about things or people. Some things that generally apply to me are that I can be very open minded to respond to anything that happens, I appear to be loose and casual, and I do like to work in bursts of energy at times.
Moving forward to Bloom’s taxonomy it was developed to provide a common language for teachers to discuss and exchange learning and assessment methods. It has six tiers and each help a learner go from lower-level cognitive skills to a higher level. The six levels are knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. It provides a systematic way to describe how a learner’s performance grows when mastering academic tasks. For myself, I like to refer back to this way of accessing information I have learned so that I can actually go back and understand what I learned. It gives me more guidance and more of an insight on how and why I got that answer and what goes into it being that way. It helps me have a clear understanding of what was learned if I’m able to fully identify my information in each step. Bloom’s taxonomy is a big factor I’ve realized in a few group projects I have been involved in for other classes and each of those six keys are a major role in it to be the high-level work that we want to create.
When we discussed multiple intelligences in class it didn’t surprise me that I scored the highest in kinesthetic, body movement. The multiple intelligence test purpose is to describe the different ways students learn and acquire information. For instance, others can learn better from words, numbers, pictures and music, but for me incorporating movements into my learning helps me process and retain information better. A recurring example that I tend to carry out about this is when I’m home studying for a quiz or test I come up with a song and incorporate hand movements for each part. When it comes to a test, I can memorize it, but recite a song and casually make hand motions as I walk back to myself in class. The multiple intelligence theory for me helps me draw back into learning since I’m such a diverse learner. Being a kinesthetic learner, it also defines that I like to take things apart and put them together, which is one hundred percent true. I enjoy solving mysteries and I like to think of computing math problems as my puzzle. The equation is just part of my ‘puzzle’ and I need to figure out the numbers which would refer to my ‘pieces’ to put it together to achieve my answer which is the completed puzzle.
The last style of learning I will be talking about is brain dominance and left/right brain. This theory suggests that certain approaches to thinking and learning differ according to the hemispheres, left and right, of the brain. It is said that people described as left-brain thinkers are told that they have strong math and logic skills whereas those who are described as right-brain thinkers are told that their talents are more on the creative side of things. For me I am a right brain thinker. For the most part I’m a very outgoing individual and have a very creative side to me. I like to make art pieces on my own free time and enjoy going all out for projects that are due for class. I don’t think of myself as a left-brain thinker because I have a hard time with math. Yes, I enjoy the solving of the problems but it does take me awhile and I can get frustrated very easily when solving a problem. For the whole logic aspect of it I don’t necessarily have the fastest common sense and quick intuition that some have. I like to take time about my answer and think deeply about it. Looking at it, it almost reflects a lack of self confidence in myself as a learner but I know that I just need the extra time to reflect on what’s at hand.
All in all, my learning style is always evolving and some styles may work better depending on which particular topic I’m learning about. I’m excited to see how these learning styles will carry out throughout my educational career and my real life. I realize that I learn best by asking questions and staying involved. Yes, lectures are very informing but it’s very hard for me to stay focused while listening for a period of time. It is important for us as individuals to understand different types of learning and the way ourselves learn to help broaden our learning capabilities and perspectives.
