Biographical information for each woman
Clara Barton
I was born in the 19th Oxford, Massachusetts. I later became a teacher, I helped out in the U.S army where I was responsible for the collection and distribution of supplies and as the civil war took place, I worked as an independent nurse.. I had dedicated my life to helping others, and so I opted to open a free primary school in New Jersey. Once on a visit to Europe, I got the opportunity to work with an international organization called the Red Cross. I was inspired, and this made me pushed for the formation of the American Red cross in the year 1881. I later resigned and wrote a book titled “The Story of My Childhood” which was published in 1907.
Corrie Ten Boom
I was born in a Christian devoted family that dedicated their lives to helping people. Our family was greatly inspired by faith. Our home offered refuge to people being hunted down by the Nazis during the 2nd world war this was in 1943 – 1944. I was against the Nazis and their acts. We took up the responsibility and provided shelter to so many people, most of which were Jewish. Sometime in February, my family was betrayed, and we later arrested some of my family members who passed on sadly.
The historical status of women in general
Clara Barton
Amongst the women in the 19th century, I was so lucky because in that period in time women had no power and depended on men to get things done. Women were associated with the agricultural society this later changed to women being associated with the careers, which their husbands had. Most of the women who were affected by such segregation were single and divorced women. Although job opportunities for women were limited, at some point, women started working but they were only exploited and paid less this could not be easily resolved because women had no political power.
Corrie Ten Boom
In the 19th-century women’s status was determined by factors such as their economic ability, religion, and the belief that women were inferior. Most women had to work in rich people’s homes as servants, and others worked to supervise the servants, just to supplement their husbands’ income. As much as what was expected from women changed their status in society remained the same. In 1968 I have crowned the queen of Holland.
Role women should play in society during their lifetimes
Clara Barton
Women should take advantage of opportunities in their life and make great changes to our society; we can bring change in our societies even during unpredictable and challenging times.
Corrie Ten Boom
As women, taking care of society is what we do best; doing that, especially in times of war without discrimination could have been the best thing.
Women’s current roles
Corrie Ten Boom
In modern society, women are protected by laws that place them in a better position to do what is necessary to improve society. Women should be active participants in the developmental programs in society. I believe that all women can be nurses and political activists. The active involvement of women in progressive assignments in society is all about identifying areas in the society in which they can participate. Women in the contemporary setting have an advantage as compared to their counterparts in the 19th Century. Today, societal issues like male chauvinism, gender inequalities, and violence against women can be addressed.
Recently, cases of “trafficking” of women and underage children have become common in certain countries. Occurrences pose a challenge to women’s development and freedom. They also hinder women’s input into societal development. In the early years of the 19th Century, women were supposed to marry while young. Today, women are encouraged to pursue professional courses before getting married.
Clara Barton
Women’s participation should not only be in their homes and to their husbands but also in the community at large. Women should take up more roles in society, especially politically.
