Week 4: Natural vs. Artificial Selection
For full credit: Your post should contain at least 5 sentences. You must thoroughly reply to the posts of at least two peers.
Natural selection is described as “the process by which forms of life having traits that better enable them to adapt to specific environmental pressures, as predators, changes in climate, or competition for food or mates, will tend to survive and reproduce in greater numbers than others of their kind, thus ensuring the perpetuation of those favorable traits in succeeding generations.” (dictionary.com)
Artificial selection, on the other hand is described as “the identification by humans of desirable traits in plants and animals, and the steps taken to enhance and perpetuate those traits in future generations. Artificial selection works the same way as natural selection, except that with natural selection it is nature, not human interference, that makes these decisions.” (nationalgeographic.com)
The underlined part of the definition above made me want to discuss these terms with you. Considering that climate change is a human-induced phenomenon, where do we draw the line on what is natural and what is artificial selection? Are the adaptations occurring due to climate change part of artificial selection, meaning that genes are adapting according to human-induced favorable traits? Or are they still part of natural selection as long as they are occurring in nature and not in a lab?

Radiolab summary:
“Six years ago, a new infection began popping up in four different hospitals on three different continents, all around the same time. It wasn’t a bacteria or a virus. It was … a killer fungus. No one knew where it came from, or why. Today, the story of an ancient showdown between fungus and mammals that started when dinosaurs disappeared from the earth. Back then, the battle swung in our favor (spoiler alert!) and we’ve been hanging onto that win ever since. But one scientist suggests that the rise of this new infectious fungus indicates our edge is slipping, degree by increasing degree.”
Settler Colonialism & the Dominant Narrative (You need to put quotes to support your answer. It’s just a paragraph for each question. like 8-10 sentences)
Read the interview with Native American Studies scholar Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz on settler colonialism – particularly the sections about 4 questions in, on “the relationship between settler colonialism and immigration” and Israel. Watch the video on Native American poet John Trudell reading “Look at Us.” Also read chapter 1 of Takaki’s A Different Mirror, paying close attention to the opening pages to understand the “Master Narrative.” Then answer the following 4 questions in well-supported paragraphs, using quotes from the text and explanation in your own words:
1. According to Frantz Fanon and Native American Studies scholar Roxanne Dunbar-Oritz, explain what settler colonialism is. What are its elements? Mention a past and a modern example. How does she view Israel?
2. What are your thoughts on the ongoing destruction and genocide by Israel in Palestine? What forms of protest have you witnessed or observed? What effect does protest have on the political situation in Gaza? What effect is it having on this generation?
3. Listen to John Trudell’s poem “Look at Us.” Consider the profile of John Trudell in week 3 lecture. Who is the “Us”? Who or what is the “Them”?
4. Explain Ronald Takaki’s concept of “the Master Narrative.” What is the intended purpose or outcome of the Master Narrative? Can you think of an example from your own schooling, or U.S. popular culture where the Master Narrative operates?
