Colleague’s response : According to Goodwin et al. 2018), psychotherapy is a biological treatment. It can be considered brain therapy as it involves helping an individual to re-elaborate his/her sense of self through new experiences that involve emotional, internal, and cognitive regulation processing. Psychotherapy as a biological treatment has been enhanced by the new understanding of the biological underpinnings of human behavior, complex behavior, maladaptive responses, and how psychotherapy fosters psychopathologies. Psychotherapy is a complex biological treatment that is tailored to each patient. It targets multiple receptors, and a few neurotransmitters and involves all biological regulations that underly complex brain responses. Successful psychotherapy results in comprehensive, measurable, physical, and lasting changes in a patient’s brain.
Culture, religion, and socioeconomics impact the perspectives of individuals regarding the value of psychotherapy treatment. Culture helps to frame expectations within a psychotherapy experience. A patient may deem a psychotherapy experience helpful when it is aligned with his/her cultural values and ineffective if it is not aligned. Similarly, a patient’s perspective about the value of a particular psychotherapy experience may be determined by how well the therapy is aligned with his/her religious beliefs. As such, a patient may not deem an otherwise effective therapy helpful if it goes against his/her religion or religious beliefs. The socioeconomic status of a patient may also influence a patient’s perspective regarding the value of psychotherapy. Depending on the cost of a session, an individual may not deem it worthwhile to spend lots of money for talk therapy, especially among individuals with low socioeconomic status; such individuals may rather spend that money on other basic needs.
Regarding the ethical and legal considerations between personal, group, and family therapy, when treating groups and family members, a therapist should keep information shared by a group member or family member confidential from other members. This means a therapist must also hold individual members’ confidentiality for information shared privately among other family or group members. However, for information shared during family or group sessions, a therapist cannot be held ethically or legally responsible if such information leaks to the public, as any member of the group could be responsible for the leakage. Therefore, when attending to individual patients, a therapist is fully liable ethically and legally in case of a breach of privacy or confidentiality (Baptista et al., 2022). Therefore, when treating an individual, I will take measures that ensure the patient’s information is kept confidential. In a group setting, I will be keen to understand situations when I am attending to group members individually and conjointly to ensure I do not breach his/her privacy or confidentiality.
