In this activity, you will be exploring the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the region where you hope to be employed to compare pay to other geographical regions. This assignment allows you to apply your knowledge and understanding of some of the core HR practices and apply them to your own life.

This assignment addresses course outcome 2. It is worth 30 points, and is due by 11:59 pm CST on the date due.
Access the Bureau of Labor Statistics website and find out how pay in the geographical area that you hope to be employed within compares with pay in other geographical areas. Find a wage survey on the site. This can be done by choosing the tab “Subjects” and clicking on Wage Data by Area & Occupation, then OEWS Data Wages – Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics (you should also explore the Geographic Information from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages tab).
The Wages by Occupation and Area will bring you to the BLS Wage Data by Area and Occupation. Look through the various survey results on this page to find pay data for three different jobs that interest you. You will need to also view the wage data for the three jobs from different geographic areas.
Compare the pay survey results for the three jobs in three geographic areas (one of these areas should be the area that you hope to be employed within).
Answer the following questions:
List the three jobs you selected and list the three geographic areas that you selected (5 points)
Which job has pay that is most similar across the geographic areas? (5 points)
Which geographic area has the highest pay level? (5 points)
What do you think accounts for differences in pay level across geographic areas?(5 points)
Why is pay higher in a geographic area for some jobs but not others? (5 points)
If you were a hiring manager for an organization, what concerns would you have about using this data to actually determine how much to pay employees in the jobs you identified? (5 points)
