Semester Project:
Your semester project for this course will be to write a response paper on the biographical-drama
film United 93. Your goal as your are watching this film, is to see how it relates to our course
material in Homeland Security. Your response paper will be informative and tell your readers
how the film “fits into” your coursework. You are not simply summarizing the film. You will
tell the reader things such as, how the film made you feel overall, your opinion on scenes, how
scenes related to our course, important quotes made, how does an experience in the film relate to
an experience related to another homeland security event, etc.. If you feel something was good
or bad either, please provide why you feel that way. Examples from the film are always a good
idea!
A high quality response paper will have a unique viewpoint. Your unique viewpoint here will be
connecting the film, United 93, to our course.
The response paper will be between 800 and 1,000 words (this is only 2 to 3 pages of body in
length). It will include title page and a reference list. We will work along the APA formatting
guidelines. Your final draft will be due the Thursday prior to Fall Break, November 19, 2020.
Key Points to make sure you include
Introduction (1 to 2 paragraphs)
You will give a brief summary of the film. This is also where you can list the director, the film
title, and the main characters. You will want to capture the reader’s attention and seek to gain
the interest of your audience. The main focus will be to describe the film that you are
“responding to.” You will end your introduction with your thesis statement. You will list the
key points, which you are analyzing, as well as the main idea of the paper.
Body (6 to 10 paragraphs)
This is where you will show not only that you watched the film, but that you understand the
context of it. The easiest way (for me) to write the body in a response paper is to dedicate each
paragraph to a particular point or idea. Then, show your confirmation of that point or idea
through examples, quotes, hypotheses, etc… Since this is a response paper, you can also put
your opinions and feelings about your points, as well. Your goal is for your audience to be able
to feel like they have viewed and understood the film, even though they have not watched it.
Conclusions (1 to 2 paragraphs)
In the conclusion, you will provide a summary of your stance on the main ideas of the paper.
This is where you will restate your thesis statement, as well. You will conclude with your key
points from the body paragraphs of the paper, but do not add any new ideas. New ideas in a
conclusion paragraph will make the paper very confusing for the reader, because they are not
sure where the idea came from. The conclusion is also a good place to put any overall
comparisons with your stance and other homeland security theory.

opportunity for your next level of education and practical experience. My goal is not to “ding”

justice related careers, so will be extremely beneficial to you in the long run. I will also be
