“The Great Displacement” by Jake Bittle gives readers a glimpse into the life on an islander. I have mixed feelings regarding the text. The perseverance of some of the characters in the story are heart warming. I do love Coconuts Bar, which has been around for ages. I have lived on several islands now and storms are just apart of life. Patrick’s story personally irritates me. I understand he grew up in Canada, and “had a dream,” but he was ill prepared or informed when he embraced on his adventure of becoming a business owner in the Keys. Having owned my own business on an island, you take steps both financially and mentally because you are aware of the natural disasters that could take place in that area, at any given time. It is part of being a responsible adult. As stated in the text, the Keys were mostly uninhabited up until recently, he should have researched the area and prepared. I understand Irma was a stronger storm than seen before, but how do we really know? There was no one living here, it wasn’t a developed island. I believe the world is changing and climate change is real but as a whole, Mother Nature has always been unpredictable, look at Hurricane Katerina or Super Storm Sandy. If you choose to live in a place that is susceptible to extreme weather, you choose to wake up to nothing at any given time. Climate change has been gradual over time and can not be reversed. If could be potentially be slowed down, yet as a country, we do little to nothing about the issue. I know first hand the devastation a natural disaster can have on a community, it is what brought me back from Guam to the Keys. I hope this book makes people think twice before moving to our little island. Rich or poor, running towards sometime or away from something, Mother Nature makes us all equal.
