For the first essay, students are going to carefully read the Mind and Media section of “Chapter 13: Argument” from The Norton Sampler (pp. 504-522) and respond to the central questions in the introduction. Read the introduction and the three featured articles: Jaron Lanier, “You Are Losing Your Free Will,” Sherry Turkle, “Romance: Where Are You? Who Are You? Wait, What Just Happened?” and Andrea Lunsford, “Our Semi-Literate Youth? Not So Fast.” Each article has an interesting perspective on how technology impacts our lives. Do not quote, paraphrase, summarize, or refer to any of these articles in your essay. The purpose of reading these articles is to explore the topic and make note of how different authors create an argument.
After reading the introduction and the articles, explore your thoughts on the following central questions: “Are we ignoring the emotional needs of the people physically around us—not to mention our own deeper feelings—when we text each other from afar instead of engaging face-to-face? And are we doing so against our own will? Or do smartphones and other technologies keep us meaningfully connected with one another at all times as never before? Maybe both realities are true” (Cooley 504). Make sure you answer these questions directly.
Cooley, Thomas. The Norton Sampler: Short Essays for Composition. 10th ed. W. W. Norton, 2021.
After answering these questions, craft a clear thesis statement that expresses your opinion. Your opinion or position on the issue will be your CLAIM. Then come up with some good reasons for your position. And finally think about what evidence you can provide to your readers that would support your position. Your evidence must come from your personal experience and examples you can provide. Do not use statistics or expert testimony in this essay. That type of evidence requires outside research, and I don’t want students to use outside research just yet. Essays that utilize outside research will receive a failing grade (zero points). Students need to master writing an argument without incorporating outside ideas first. TOPIC: Mind and Media: Is Technology Changing Our Minds—and Hearts?
