Now that you know more about the difference between gender and sexuality, think about some of the ways we are taught the “rules” for gender roles. These rules usually become stereotypes and those who do not fit the model are seen as being less than others. When do we start to learn what we should or not do based on being identified as male or female? What happens when we don’t conform to society’s gender stereotypes? Are we guilty of sanctioning those who don’t fit gender stereotypes?
Assignment: Choose 2 different cartoons that you are familiar with. They can be characters from your childhood or one that is currently on television, social media, etc. One cartoon should focus on a male character and the other on a female character. Think back to how the characters were portrayed in regard to their gender roles. Were characters of the same gender treated the same?
