The purpose of this discussion post is to provide an opportunity to apply some of our course concepts to an actual intercultural communication interaction in a medical context.
For your initial response you will be acting as a Communication Consultant with the purpose of analyzing and evaluating the practices of a medical organization. You will write a 300-400 word post in response to the areas/questions identified below.
Please include at least 3 terms/concepts (remember to bold the concept and provide page numbers) from either Chapter 10( Communication Between Cultures
by Larry A. Samovar; Richard E. Porter; Edwin R. McDaniel; Carolyn Sexton Royor) other chapters to ground your response.
Be sure to use specific examples and moments from the video (14 minutes long) to focus your response.
Our writing goals for the response are to:
(1) Analyze the interactions in the video to determine how culture was shaping/influencing the interactions (i.e. beliefs or worldviews, value orientations, language, etc.),
(2) Determine where, when and how specific aspects of communication broke down (consider the ingredients of communication or specific moments of interaction) and
(3) Suggest some concrete changes (2-3 specific suggestions) in the hospital’s practices with the goal of limiting or ending these types of misunderstandings.
Remember that if we do not accurately identify and describe the problem(s) taking place in this context/situation our efforts to resolve the problem won’t go to the root causes. Take your time to look at this scenario from multiple perspectives.
Recommended Video Viewing Strategy (2-3 times if possible)
Watch, Listen, and take detailed notes (you will not need to provide these notes) on the interactions from all perspectives.
Perspective taking, or the ability to comprehend an experience, interaction or event from all participants point of view is an important skill.
Being able to “see” or understand an experience, event, interaction from “all” perspective in the video can be accomplished by attending to each of the following participants:
